This article is a digest and critical analysis of Thomas Szasz’s oeuvre based on his better known works. His position is represented by four statements, three of which are discussed in this article; the second was discussed by this author in a review of Szasz’s The Meaning of Mind published in Vol.7(2) of this journal. The four statements are: (1) All disease is underlain by tissue pathology. Without that pathology we do not face disease but only the actions of people that disturb us; (2) The mind is a fiction; (3) Mental illness is therefore a myth, and psychiatric diagnoses are bogus contrivances; and (4) Individuals are moral agents responsible for their behavior, and psychiatry is a fraud and a fake medical specialty.

The concept of Pathya (wholesome diet) is an unique contribution of Ayurveda, which plays an important role in prevention and management of many diseases. “Shakavarga”, a category under dietetics in classical texts of Ayurveda enlisted different vegetables with their properties and indications in different disease conditions. These vegetables can be prescribed as Pathya (wholesome diet) in clinical practice. In the present review, plants described under Shakavarga, indicated as Pathya in different diseases related to Pranavaha Srotas (Respiratory system) were compiled from 15 different Ayurvedic classical texts. Critical analysis of the compiled data reveals that out of 332 vegetables described under Shakavarga, 44 are indicated in respiratory disease like Shvasa (Dyspnoea/Asthma), Kasa (Cough), Peenasa (Chronic rhinitis) and Hikka (Hiccup). Among them, botanical identity of 42 classical plants has been established and maximum number of vegetables belongs to the family cucurbitaceae (10) followed by solanaceae (4). Some of these vegetables have been reported for their various pharmacological activities related to prevention and management of diseases related to Pranavaha Srotas (Respiratory system). These vegetables are reported for their anti-inflammatory (16), antioxidant (14), anti-allergic (6) and antitussive (3) activities. The observed result may be helpful in use of vegetables as Pathya (wholesome diet) and planning further scientific studies about the efficacy of these plants on prevention as well as management of respiratory diseases.

This paper is another contribution to the long list of articles and book chapters written about Birago Diop's work, “Sarzan.” Unlike most if not all interpretations of the eponymous hero's mental illness, this article reads Sarzan's nervous breakdown as an invitation to services, which are radically different from the ones he is mandated by the French administration to perform, yet integral to the customs of his village. To many critics, the mental degradation witnessed in Sarzan, is an ancestral correction inflicted to Sarzan following his desacralization of rituals and sites sacred to his community. But however, legitimate this interpretation may be, it is quite limited in light of various forms of recuperative rituals practiced in traditional Africa to address and cure disturbances related to the mind.

SynopsisGoodwin Wharton (1653–1704) was a nobleman's son and a Whig MP who played no small part in English public life. His manuscript journal shows, however, that he also lived a bizarre secret life of the mind of a kind which, in later generations, would have led to his confinement as suffering from mental illness. Above all, through the offices of his medium and lover, Mary Parish, he entered into elaborate relations both with the fairy world and with God and His Angels. This paper examines our records of Wharton's consciousness

Over the past several years, despite the constant evolution of the legislation the problem of gender equality in the West has been steadily increasing. What is the reason why there is no significant progress in solving gender equality issues in the West yet? Several reports and researches have pointed out to this problem. On the contrary, Islam provides a viable solution to this ever increasing problem; for Islam has a comprehensive yet simple view of gender equality. But the West, instead of understanding Islamic principles objectively, raises objections without a thorough study. However, the Western principle of gender equality has completely failed. In this article a critical analysis of the western gender equality and Islamic principles has been carried out. It also highlights Islamic view point of gender equality. The study argues that the contemporary gender equality problems and issues that have engulfed the world particularly the Western countries can be mitigated by employing the Islamic principles of gender equality

The authors offer an analysis of mental illness in the work of a key twentieth century author: Virginia Woolf. A critical review of her literary legacy allows us to get closer to what might be one of the most intense literary portrayals of illness and its metaphors and, at the same time, to the representations, euphemisms, silences, and monsters depicted in the chapters of her life and in the unique voice of an essential author.

The existence of a scientific work is the main thing that must be owned by the higher education world. In this case, the existence of a college will be determined by how high the productivity of scientific works produced by academics in it. The high scientific work is of course must be followed with the quality of the resulting quality. One way to measure the quality of a scientific work is through a critical review. The important role of critical review of scientific work is not just a report or writing about the contents of a scientific article alone, but rather to evaluation, such as reviewing or reviewing, interpreting and re-analyzing a scientific work. This paper attempts to provide a critical review model for a scientific work, in which case a dissertation by Muljono Damopolii is chosen. The method used in this study is a critical-analysis method, with systematization of the following steps; Briefly describe Muljono Damopolii's thoughts and views on his dissertation; Conducting critical analysis both in terms of theory and methodological aspects of the ideas that have been produced Muljono Damopolii in his dissertation related to the issue of renewal of Islamic education in the Modern School of Education Al Quran IMMIM Tamalanrea Makassar; Providing a new offer in terms of both theory and methodological to the dissertation of Muljono Damopolii's work.

Endophenotypes are traits that, while genetically related to an illness, are not used for diagnoses (e.g., a symptom). It is unlikely that specific genes directly code for any of our current psychiatric diagnoses. Rather, genes influence neurobiological processes that either increase or decrease risk for mental illness. One use of an endophenotype is to help characterize a genetic locus or gene previously identified as conferring risk for a particular illness. In this context, endophenotypes help to bridge the gap between a behavioral syndrome and molecular genetic variation. Alternately, endophenotypes can be used for novel locus or gene discovery, particularly when used in multivariate analyses. In this chapter, we define endophenotypes and describe different ways they have been applied to aid our understanding of the genetic architecture of psychiatric disorders.
