Assessment of genetic variability and inter-character association in the germplasm of cowpea (Vigna Unguiculata L. Walp) in hot arid climate

Studies on genetic variability, correlation and path coefficient analysis were carried out with 38 accessions of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp.) evaluated in two environments i. e. kharif 2013 (E1) and kharif 2014 (E2) at Research field of NBPGR, Regional Station Jodhpur, India. Analysis of variance revealed significant differences among the genotypes for all the traits. Genotypic coefficient of variation was highest for number of clusters per plant followed by number of pods per plant in both the environments. High broad sense heritability along with high genetic advance for seed yield per plant, 100 seed weight, pod length, number of pods per plant, peduncle length, number of clusters per plant, number of branches per plant and plant height indicated the presence of additive gene effects for these traits in cowpea. In both the environments seed yield per plant was positively correlated with 100 seed weight, pod length, number of pods per plant, number of clusters per plant, number of branches per plant and plant height. The highest positive direct effect registered by number of branches per plant followed by number of clusters per plant in E1 environment and by number of branches per plant followed by plant height in E2 environment. The traits like 100 seed weight, plant height, number of pods per plant number of clusters per plant and number of branches per plant were identified as selection criteria for obtaining good parental lines in cowpea breeding programmes.

<p>Genetic parameters are important in genetic improvement and variety development. This study aimed to determine the effective characters that can be applied as selection criterion in soybean breeding using genetic parameters. About 100 soybean genotypes were grown in the Muneng Agricultural Technology Research and Assessment Installation from April to July 2020. The trial was conducted using a randomized complete block design. The results showed that high genetic variability was found on days to maturity, number of branches per plant, number of productive nodes per plant, 100-seed weight, and seed yield. The high heritability was shown by days to maturity, plant height, number of branches per plant, and 100-seed weight. All phenotypic correlations were significant, except for the correlation between seed yield and days to maturity, plant height, number of branches, and number of productive nodes. The seed yield had no genotypic correlation with all agronomic characters observed. The genotypic correlation was only significant for plant height and number of productive nodes, number of branches and number of filled pods, as well as number of productive nodes and 100-seed weight. Therefore, the improvement of seed yield can be conducted through direct selection using the seed yield parameter or indirectly using the 100-seed weight.<br /><br /></p>

The study of the effect of three well known mutagens, ethyl methane sulphonate (EMS), methyl methane sulphonate (MMS) and gamma rays (GR) on the yield contributing traits of the urdbean variety TPU-4 were carried out in the M3 generation. Effect of selected mutagenic treatments/doses of EMS (0.02, 0.03 and 0.04 M), MMS (0.0025, 0.05 and 0.01 M) and (GR) (30, 40 and 50 KR) on different yield contributing traits like plant height, plant spread, number of pods per plant, pod length, number of seeds per pod, seed yield per plant and 100 seed weight were analyzed in the M3 populations of the variety TPU-4. Seeds of M2 plants and control were harvested separately and sown to raise M3 population.. Genetic variabilty in the mutagen administered M3 progeny of the urdbean variety TPU-4 was analyzed by employing statistical methods. Data on mean values and shift in the mean of seven quantitative traits was evaluated on individual plant basis. The experimental findings revealed that concentrations / dose of the all these mutagens showed inhibitory effect on plant height, number of pods per plant, pod length and number of seeds per pod. Lower concentrations of mutagens exerted a promotory effect on plant spread, 100 seed weight and seed yield per plant while higher concentrations of these mutagens inhibited them to different extent.

This research was carried out in the Experimental Field of Tekirda đ Agricultural Faculty. Two common vetch varieties and 5 lines were sown with 150 seeds/m 2 plant density according to a randomised block design. Some important yield related characters such as plant height, number of branches, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod, pod width, pod length, 1000 seed weight, fodder and seed yield were examined. The results of variance analysis showed that the effects of genotype, year and their interaction on number of branches and number of pods per plant were all significant. In addition, the effect of year and variety on plant height and seed yield were found to be significant. Moreover, the number of seeds per pod, pod width and pod length were found to be significant in variety and year × variety interaction. There was only a difference between years for 1000 seed weight and fodder yield. According to the results, genotype 283 and Tokat had similar performance to that of commercial cultivars (Ürem, Kubilay). Especially the fodder and seed yield of genotype 283 were found to be higher than those of the cultivars (Ürem, Kubilay).

The 44 accessions which were collected from Rajasthan, Gujarat and M.P. were evaluated in a randomized complete block design with three replicates during <italic>summer</italic> and <italic>kharif</italic> seasons in the hot arid climate of western Rajasthan to estimate the presence of genetic variability, inter-characters associations, to identify a suitable accession for cultivation during <italic>summer</italic> and to compare the relative performance of the genotypes in two seasons. The high degree of genetic variability was estimated during both seasons for seed yield per plant (g), plant height (cm.), pod length (cm.), peduncle length (cm.), number of branches per plant (cm), number of clusters per plant, number of cluster per branch and cluster length (cm.). The moderate to high heritabilities coupled with moderate expected genetic advance were observed for all studied traits. The plant height, pod length, number of branches per plant exhibited positive and significant association with seed yield whereas the incidence of leaf crinkle virus and yellow mosaic virus correlated negatively and significantly with seed yield. The accession IC 39786 exhibited absolute genetic resistance to crinkle virus disease in the field conditions. The accessions IC 36245, IC-36555, IC 36667, IC 36577 and IC 36604 exhibited yield advantage over best check during <italic>summer</italic> whereas accessions IC- 39675, IC-36607, IC-251908, IC 36245 and IC-36563 performed better than best check in terms of seed yield during <italic>kharif</italic> season.

The present experiment was conducted to determine magnitude of genetic variability with fifteen kabuli chickpea genotypes in the 2013/2014 and 2014/2015 growing season under Mediterranean climate conditions. In this present study seed yield per plant and yield component were investigated. The experiment was orginazed with three replications in randomized complate blocks design. Data were recorded on plant height, number of branches per plant, height of first podding node, full and total pods number per plant, seeds number per plant, 100-seed weight and seed yield per plant. Analysis of variance for seed yield per plant and its component showed significant differences among all genotypes. Broad-sense heritability ranged from 12.27% (total pod number per plant) to 93.88% (100-seed weight). Moderate and high estimates of broad sense heritability were observed for branches number per plant, harvest index and 100-seed weight. It can be concluded that the seed yield of chickpea can be improved by selecting these characters in breeding chickpea materials.

Forty genotypes of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) were studied in a field experiment conducted at the experimental field of BARI, Joydebpur, during the year 2004-2005. Significant genetic variations were observed among the genotypes for days to flower, plant height, number of branches per plant, number of pods per plant, 100-seed weight and seed yield per plant. The highest genotypic variability was observed in number of seeds per pod and seed yield, followed by number of pods per plant and branches per plant, whereas days to maturity showed the lowest genotypic co-efficient of variability. In all cases, phenotypic variances were higher than the genotypic ones. High heritability coupled with high genetic advance was observed for seed yield per plant, pods per plant, 100-seed weight and dry weight per plant, which indicates that selection could be effective for these traits. Considerable heritability was observed in pod length, seeds per pod and days to flowering. The results showed that seed yield per plant had positive and significant relation with branches per plant and pods per plant. Number of pods per plant were positively correlated with branches per plant but negatively correlated with plant height and days to first flowering. Weight of 100-seed had significant and positive correlation with days to first flowering, dry weight per plant and pod length but had negative correlation with pods per plant and seeds per pod. Days to first flowering, pod length, pods per plant, dry weight per plant had direct effect on yield. Therefore, days to first flowering, pods per plant, pod length, branches per plant and dry weight per plant are found the important characters which could be used in selection for yield.

A field experiment was conducted during <italic>kharif</italic> season 2013 to estimate the correlations and path coefficients for ten quantitative characters among 72 cowpea germplasm. Seed yield per plant had positive significant correlation with days to 50% flowering, plant height, primary branches per plant, pods per plant, pod length, seeds per pod and 100-seed weight at both genotypic and phenotypic levels. Path coefficient analysis revealed that primary branches per plant and 100-seed weight had high direct positive effect on seed yield per plant at both genotypic and phenotypic levels. Pod length, days to maturity, 100 seed weight and pod wall proportion had high positive direct effects on seed yield per plant at only genotypic level. Correlation and path analysis indicated that for increasing seed yield in cowpea direct selection should be carried out for higher values of primary branches per plant, pods length, days to maturity and 100 seed weight.

Abstract Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) is an important tropical legume crop contributing significantly to food security in tropical regions. The present study was carried out to determine the extent of genetic variation, to estimate character associations, heritability and genetic advance of 25 quantitative traits in 30 genotypes of cultivated Vigna unguiculata from the western highland region of Cameroon. These quantitative traits were selected among cowpea descriptor lists. For all these traits, the analysis of variance showed significant difference among genotypes, highlighting the existence of important genetic divergence among the studied accessions. The highest phenotypic and genotypic coefficient of variation was observed in grain yield, pod yield and 100 seed weight. Genetic advance of these three characters was also the highest. Broad sense heritability was high in general, with 20 traits out of 25 having heritability values greater than 70%. This high heritability indicates little influence of the environment on these characters in cowpea. The highest heritability was recorded for 100 seed weight (98.15%) and the lowest for shoot weight (41.38%). At 0.05 probability level, grain yield correlated significantly with 21 out of the 24 other quantitative traits. Among others, grain yield correlated positively and significantly with 100 seed weight, number of pods per plant, number of branches per plant, number of nodes per plant, plant height, plant width, pod length, pod width, seed length, seed width and number of seeds per pod. These positive correlations between grain yield and many other traits indicate that a selection program based on any of these traits will result in increasing yield. Cluster analysis using UPGMA method revealed five distinct clusters. Genotypes named KEBCP025, KEB-CP006, KEB-CP098, KEB-CP070, and more importantly KEB-CP054 and KEB-CP004, were grouped in a single cluster and were characterized by a significantly higher grain yield, pod yield, number of pods per plant, number of seed per pod, plant height, pod length and pod width compared to other clusters. Accessions KEB-CP036 and KEB-CP031 produced significantly more important fresh biomass. These genotypes could be used as parents in genetic improvement programs aiming to increase yield and fresh biomass in cowpea.

Background: Lentil is the major cultivated pulse crop in the state of West Bengal in terms of total area coverage under cultivation. Selection of high yielding and better quality genotype is the prime vital matter to increase productivity. Investigation and a better understanding of the variability existing in a population base of the crop are pivotal to crop improvement so that the plant breeders can exploit it. Methods: The current study has been carried out at the experimental farm of the University of Calcutta during 2016-2017 in a plot designed with the randomized block design. It was carried out to estimate the magnitude of genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance of fifty-four lentil germplasms. Result: Moderate to high heritability, GCV, PCV, GA and GA % of mean was obtained by days to1st flowering, days to 50% flowering, pods per plant and harvest index. The genotypic and phenotypic association of seed yield was significantly positive with traits like plant height, pods/plant, 100 seed weight and harvest index. Characters like days to 50% flowering, plant height, primary branches per plant, pods/plant, pod length, 100 seed weight and harvest index shows a positive direct effect on seed yield in path analysis suggesting select for such traits while exercising selection for seed yield per plant in lentil.

The study was carried out to determine the effects of organic (rose pulp, barn fertilizer and bacterial inoculation) and chemical fertilizer applications on yield and yield components of chickpea varieties (Aydın 92, Azkan and Gökçe) in Dinar district of Afyonkarahisar province in 2011. The experimental design was split plot with three replications. In this research, plant height, first pod height, number of branches, pod and grains per plant, seed yield in plant, biological yield, grain yield, harvest index, 100 seed weight and protein ratio were investigated. The results showed that plant height was changed between 38.87-44.23 cm, first pod height between 17.37-21.43 cm, number of branches between 2.70-3.53, pods number between 30.37-50.37 and number of seed per plant between 29.43-48.47, seed yield in plant between 10.50-18.30 g, biological yield between 20.87-42.50 g, 100 seed weight between 34.67-40.43 g, grain yield between 128.10-188.57 kg/da, harvest index between 32.10-53.08% and protein ratio between 22.67-25.67%. As a result, the effect of organic (rose pulp, barn fertilizer and bacterial inoculation) and chemical fertilizer applications on chickpea varieties has been important in terms of yield characteristics. It should be suggested chickpea variety Gökçe with firstly barn manure and followed by chemical fertilization and rose pulp applications.
