Studies on seed production of pea (Pisum sativum L.) varieties with phosphorus levels under Malwa Plateau conditions

Field investigation was conducted at the Bahadari farm, College of Horticulture, Mandsaur during rabi 2009-10. Eighteen treatment combinations comprising of six varieties viz.,V1-Arkel, V2-Pusa Pragati, V3-Matar Ageta-6, V4-Kashi Nandini, V5- Kashi Shakti V6-Azad Pea-3 and three phosphorus levels P1-60kg P2O5/ha, P2-90 kg P2O5/ha and P3-120kg P2O5/ha were laid out in factorial randomized block design with three replications.Observations were recorded on growth, yield parameters, seed yield and quality. It was concluded that the variety Matar Ageta-6 was superior as indicated through seed yield and quality. Among the phosphorus levels there was increase in growth, yield parameters, yield and seed quality up to P3 (120 kg P2O5/ha) level but significant improvement was only up to P2 (90 kg P2O5/ha). Economic analysis of different treatments revealed that cost of cultivation was increased with increasing dose of phosphorus application irrespective of variety. Gross return, net profit and cost : benefit ratio were realised highest in variety Matar Ageta-6 with P3 (120 kg P2O5/ha) application. It was followed by the same variety under P2 (90 kg P2O5/ha) application.However, there was very marginal increase with P3 (120 kg P2O5/ha) over P2 (90 kg P2O5/ha).

The experiment was conducted to study the effect of insecticides and stages of insecticidal sprays on seed yield and yield components in greengram. The investigation was carried out in Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, during <italic>Kharif</italic> 2012. The experiment was laid in factorial randomized block design (FRBD) consisted of 15 treatment combinations involving two factors with three replications. Among the five test insecticides, spraying of malathion @ 2 ml/l recorded significantly more number of pods/plant (20.75), pod weight (20.45g), seed yield/plant (3.17 g), seed yield/hectare (949 kg) and less percentage of infested pods (5.35%) as well as infested seeds/plant (2.66%). It was followed by nimbicidine and methyl parathion. Whereas reciprocal values for these seed yield parameters were noticed in the unsprayed control plants (16.13, 16.53g, 1.84g, 725 kg, 14.13% and 7.89%, respectively). Similar results were recorded in spraying of insecticides at 20 and 10 Days before harvest compare to 20 or 10 Days before harvest. Interaction effect between insecticides and stages of insecticidal spraying were found non-significant for most of the seed yield and quality parameters.

Squash seeds yield and quality can be improved by proper population plant spacing and the pollen quantity, which influences the pollination quality and fertilization. Nine experiments were conducted as a factorial combination of three spacing between plants (0.8 x 0.3, 0.8 x 0.6 and 0.8 x 0.9 m), two quantities of pollen (50% of an anther and another entire one) and natural insect pollination. Seed and fruit production parameters, and seed quality were evaluated. A randomized complete block design, five replications, with ten plants per plot was adopted. Larger plant spacing increased the average number of mature fruits and seed yield per plant. Seed yield was directly proportional to the amount of pollen used during pollination. Higher amounts of pollen resulted in higher seed yield per area, but the plant spacing did not affect this characteristic. Manual pollination, using a whole anther, did not differ from natural pollination in relation to seed yield and quality.

A study was carried out to assess effect of inorganic fertilizers, vermicompost, Vesicular Arbuscular Mycorhizae (VAM) and biofertilizers [Rhizobium and Phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB)] inoculation on seed yield and quality of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata). The experiment was conducted in a split plot design for two consecutive cropping season, kharif 2012 and 2013, with two main plot treatments of inorganic fertilizers i.e. 100% and 75% recommended dose of fertilizers (RDF) and nine sub plot integrated nutrient management (INM) treatments including control (No organic fertilizer). Main plot treatments were at par but sub plot INM treatments differed significantly for plant height, seed yield, number of pods/plant, pod length, number of seeds/pod, 1000-seed weight, seed germination and vigour indices. Integrated use of inorganic fertilizers + Vermicompost 2.5 t ha-1 (4.76, 4.16 q ha″1) performed significantly better than the control (3.32, 2.79 q ha″1) for seed yield and its attributes as well as seed quality parameters during Kharif 2012 and 2013, respectively. It was at par with combined use of inorganic fertilizers + biofertilizer inoculation (Rhizobium + PSB) + VAM 10 Kg ha-1 Also, the mean cost benefit ratios (2.04, 1.90) were highest for combination of biofertilizer inoculation (Rhizobium + PSB) + VAM 10 Kg ha-1 +inorganic fertilizers 100% and 75% RDF, respectively.

Due to the rapid shrinking of supply of mineral nutrients as well as observed weather fluctuations in throughout Europe in recent ten years, sustainable phosphorus fertilisation has become an important aspect of legume cultivation. There is a lack of knowledge about the effect of phosphorus (P) nutrition on the pea seed yield and quality in water poor conditions. This study was conducted to evaluate the seed yield and seed chemical composition of selected pea cultivars in response to the level of P fertilisation and weather conditions across three consecutive years. Redundancy analysis (RDA) was used to assess the proportion of variability of tested variables (seed quality traits) that could be explained by explanatory variables (year, cultivar, fertilisation). Temporary soil drought during flowering stage resulted in a significant increase in yield only after high level of phosphorus application (140 kg ha–1). This indicates that phosphorus significantly mitigated the effect of water shortage. In a dry year, pea had high concentration of fat and fibre in seeds, while in very humid year the opposite response was observed. RDA analysis proved that year effect explained over 50% variability, whereas cultivar and P fertilisation explained only 14.2% of variability. The effect of P fertilisation was only marginal (1.6%) in comparison with cultivar selection (12.6%). Interaction of pea cultivars with fertilisation shows a consistent tendency towards increase of crude protein under higher phosphorus doses for cultivars ‘Tarchalska’ and ‘Protecta’ whereas opposite tendency was observed for ‘Batuta’ and ‘Tinker’. It can be concluded that suitable cultivar selection gives a much greater opportunity to affect pea chemical composition than P fertilisation.

The experiment was conducted in the central research field at the department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Sam Higginbottom University Of Agriculture, Technology & Sciences and college, Prayagraj (U.P) during Rabi season 2020-2021. In order to standardize the suitable pre-sowing seed treatment of Mustard (Variety-Sulabh-3777) laid by Randomized block design(RBD). Influence of different seed treatment on growth, yield and seed quality parameters of mustard were evaluated by Viz T0- Control, T1-Hydropriming(-0.3Mpa) for 3Hrs, T2-KNO3 1% for 12Hrs, T3-Nacl - 1% for 12Hrs, T4-KH2PO4 -1% for 12Hrs, T5- Electromagnetic (200Guass) for 30Mins, T6-PEG6000 (0.15 Mol.) for 3Hrs, T7- Neem leaf Extract- 5% for 12Hrs, T8-Tulasi Leaf Extract-5% for 12Hrs , T9- Recommended NPK, 10-Recommended NPK+FYM, T11-Azotobacter, T12-Azotobacter + 50% NPK+ FYM. To find out influence of different seed treatment on growth, yield and seed quality parameters of mustard showed that significant treatment field emergence (%), plant height (30,60,90 DAS), days to 50% flowering, number of branches per plant, number of siliquae per plant, number of seeds per siliquae, seed yield per plant (g), seed yield per plot (g), biological yield (g), harvest index. The study helps to improve the quality to improve seed with help of seed various botanicals, chemicals and biofertilizers priming treatment which are cost effective and economic, non- toxic, ecofriendly sources.

A field trial was conducted to assess the effect of organic inputs and bioagents on growth, yield, and quality of okra. Thirteen treatments in the experiment were laid out in Randomized Block Design with three replications. The results revealed that the yield parameters were best in conjoint application of organic and inorganic fertilizer whereas the physical and quality parameters showed a maximum in integrated application of organic amendments and bioagents. On the basis of the findings it may be concluded that FYM @ 20 t/ha + VAM + Pseudomonas + Trichoderma + Azotobacter resulted the highest B: C ratio (2.66) and can be recommended as substitute for the inorganic combination of FYM @ 10 t/ha + 50:50:50 kg NPK/ha for higher quality yield with remunerative return.

Optimal seed yield and quality requires that the sulphur (S) demand of faba bean (Vicia faba L.) is ensured. The effect of S fertilization on organic cultivated faba bean was investigated under field conditions during two growing seasons (2017–2018), in Sweden. Kieserite (MgSO4) and gypsum (CaSO4) were applied at a rate of 20 and 40 kg ha-1 to study the effect on faba bean growth, yield, crude protein (CP) content and amino acid (AA) composition. Gypsum and kieserite significantly increased S concentration of faba bean dry matter (DM) in 2017. The S concentration ranged from 0.20% to 0.23% of DM compared to 0.18% in the untreated control. In 2018, kieserite application at 40 kg ha-1 significantly increased S concentration to 0.15% compared to 0.12% in the untreated control. The faba bean plants did, however, not respond neither with increased growth nor increased seed yield. The seed quality in terms of CP and S-containing AA, was not affected by S fertilization, however, significant differences were observed between the experimental sites.

This field experiment entitled “Effect of seaweed extracts on growth, yield parameters in Chickpea (Cicer arietinum. L)” was conducted during rabi at Field Experimentation Centre of the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology & Sciences, Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, India during 2019 & 2020. The experiment was consisted of 2 varieties and 14 treatments comprising of seaweed extracts (i.e., Ascophyllum nodosum, red and brown algae) which was laid in RBD (Randomized Block Design) with kabuli & desi chick pea, 14 treatments, 03 replications. The result shows that among all the treatments, the genotypes kabuli & desi chickpea treated with 2.0% A.  nodosum for 6 hours recorded the maximum value in growth parameters such as percent field germination after four (10.74 & 10.74), seven (49.26 & 47.41), and ten (77.41 & 70.74) DAS, Days to 50% flowering (88.67 & 86.00), days to maturity (154.00 & 156.33), number of branches 25 (17.93 & 16.60) and 50 DAS (36.70 & 33.57) and height at 25 (4.47 & 3.93) and 50 (7.27 & 7.00) DAS.  Similar results were also recorded in different yield parameters in both kabuli & desi chickpea genotypes such as number of pods plant (61.52 & 60.24), number of pods per plot (1025.67 & 922.00), number of seeds per plant (102.5 & 100.4), number of pods per plant (14.25 & 1525), seed yield per plant (28.30 & 25.35), seed yield per plot (358.44 & 328.86), biological yield (3187.42 & 3061.24), economical yield (1341.67 & 1231.33), and harvest index showing most superior values when treated with treatment 2.0% Ascophyllum nodosum for 6 hours. Remaining treatments i.e, treatment with 0.5% Ascophyllum nodosum solution, 1.0% Ascophyllum nodosum solution, 0.5% red and brown algae solution, 1.0% red and brown algae solution, 2.0% red and brown algae solution for 6 hours recorded the second most effective treatments observed significantly superior than untreated checks.

The field experiment was carried out in the olericulture unit, MARS, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad during 2019-2020 to study the effect of zinc and boron on seed yield and quality of onion on variety cv. Bhima super at different levels of both basal and foliar application. The treatments consists of soil application of zinc sulphate (5 kg/ha and 10 kg/ ha), Borax (4 kg/ha and 6 kg/ha) and foliar application of zinc sulphate (0.25 % and 0.5 %), Borax (0.1 % and 0.2 %) and control without micronutrient application replicated thrice in a Randomized Block Design. The foliar application was given at 45 days after bulb planting. From the present investigation, a significant increase in seed yield and quality parameters were recorded with foliar spray of zinc sulphate (0.5 %) and borox (0.2 %) viz., seed yield per plant (4.29 g), seed yield per plot (214.13 g) and seed yield per hectare (9.91q/ha). The germination percentage was found maximum from the treatment foliar application of zinc sulphate (0.5 %) (84.8%) and the other seed quality parameters was found best from the treatment foliar spray of ZnSO4 (0.5%) and B (0.2 %) i.e., higher shoot length (8.83 cm), root length (7.21 cm), seedling vigour index (1352) and test weight (3.75 g). The non-significant differences were observed due to influence of soil and foliar application of zinc and boron on electrical conductivity and seedling dry weight.

Field experiment was conducted at CCS Haryana Agricultural University KrishiVigyan Kendra, Ambala during summer season of 2014 to study the effect of phosphorus levels and varieties on growth, yield parameters, yield, economics and nutrient uptake of greengram. The experiment was laid out in randomized block design with two varieties of green gram viz. MH 421 and SML 668 and four phosphorus levels viz. control (no fertilizer), 20, 40 and 60 kg P2O5/ha with 4 replications. Cv.MH421 produced significantly higher seed yield (1158 kg/ha), yield attributing parameters, harvest index, attraction index, net returns (Rs 21001/ha), BC ratio (1.60) and nutrient uptake compared to SML 668 during summer season. Application of 40 kg P2O5/ha registered significantly higher seed yield (1283 kg/ha), yield attributing characters, harvest index, attraction index, net returns (Rs 32351/ha), BC ratio (2.08) and nutrient uptake of green gram compared to control and 20 kg P2O5/ha. However, 40 kg P2O5/ha and 60 kg P2O5/ha were at par with respect to majority of studied.
