Background: Tomato is one of the most important vegetable crops in the world due to its dietary value. Harvesting and storing of physiologically matured tomato seeds is very important to secure good quality seeds for future use in a changing climate. The objective of the study was to assess the effect of maturity stages on seed quality of two tomato accessions during cold storage. Methods: Seeds of two tomato accessions extracted at four maturity stages (i.e. initially ripe, half ripe, fully ripe and rotten) were stored at -20oC in a deep freezer for 12 months. The quality of stored seeds was measured by seed vigour and germination percentage at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months after storage. Conclusion: The study showed significant differences in seed vigour and germination percentage at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months after storage (MAS) among the maturity stages. Seeds extracted at the initially ripe stage in GH 9305 had the least vigour at 3, 6, 9 and 12 MAS. The highest reduction in seed quality during the storage period was observed in seeds extracted at the rotten stage in both accessions. Seed vigour and germination were higher in GH 9207 than GH 9305. Storage of physiologically matured tomato seeds at freezing temperature is necessary to reduce seed ageing and to maintain high seed quality.

A laboratory experiment with three replicates was conducted at Plant Physiology Division research laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) during November, 2015 to observe the seed quality of rapeseed-mustard by harvesting at different maturity stages of siliqua. Seeds were collected from siliqua of different rapeseed-mustard varieties and harvesting was made at different maturity stages based on their external color i.e., Green, pale yellow, Golden yellow and full maturity stage of siliqua. After harvesting of siliqua as per external color seeds were dried naturally about 48 hours and were packed in polythene and stored at laboratory environment for next season uses. Under laboratory condition seeds were evaluated in terms of moisture and germination percentage, speed of germination, root and shoot length, vigor index etc. Moisture content was found significantly at elevated level in respect of mustard varieties of BARI Sarisha-14 (V2), BARI Sarisha-6 (V3) and Tori-7 (V4).  The variety Tori-7 and BARI Sarisha-14 showed  the highest vigor index-II & vigor index-I, respectively. Among the harvesting stages, most of the parameters showed the highest standards in seeds harvesting at full maturity of siliqua stage (H4) followed by the golden yellow siliqua stage (H3) and pale yellow siliqua stages seeds (H2).Irrespective of rapeseed-mustard varieties seed collected from golden yellow and pale yellow siliqua stages could  be stored up to twelve month for next season without significant loss in terms of germination percentage and vigor followed by full maturity stages of siliqua harvested seeds (H4). The human consumption of vegetables in different parts of the world is quite high, among them tomato stands out on a larger scale and not so far, also is cucumber, both with great economic importance. Due to the problems regarding the vigor of many seeds, techniques that seek to improve the establishment of the seedlings in a uniform way have been implemented. One technique is the osmotic conditioning to which the seeds are submitted, for which compound solutions such as polyethylene glycol or potassium nitrate can be used, with which very satisfactory results are obtained under laboratory and field conditions The objective of this investigation was to evaluate the effect of different doses and osmotic solutions on the physiological quality of seeds of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) and cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) in laboratory and field conditions. The evaluated variables were germination percentage, germination speed index, root length and emergence of seedlings. The tomato seeds were conditioned with PEG-6000 (-0.2, -0.4, -0.6 and -0.8 Mpa) and stored for a 30 days period, and as for the cucumber seeds with PEG-6000 (-0.2 and -0.1 Mpa) and with KNO³ (100 mg and 300 mg) with a storage period of 45 days. It is concluded that, in tomato seeds, germination did not present statistical differences, however, the variables referring to vigor were favored with the conditioning in the presence of PEG-6000 with the (-0.2 Mpa) concentration, while in cucumber seeds the germination percentage was better using PEG 6000 compared to nitrate, while for vigor variables it behaved better in the presence of a concentration of (-0.2 Mpa) of PEG.

Os setores de produção e de conservação de sementes dependem diretamente de trabalhos que determinem as melhores condições de armazenamento e que, consequentemente, garantam o maior período possível de manutenção da qualidade fisiológica da semente. Em regiões tropicais, há uma maior limitação no que tange à manutenção da qualidade fisiológica durante o período de armazenamento, principalmente em ambiente não controlado, cuja variação das condições ambientais pode influenciar sobremaneira a qualidade final de um lote de sementes. Objetivou-se, com o presente trabalho, avaliar a qualidade de sementes de duas cultivares de jiló (Solanum gilo Raddi), armazenadas em condições ambientais não controladas. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o de blocos casualizados com 5 repetições, em esquema fatorial 2x5, sendo duas cultivares de jiló (Morro Grande e Português) e 5 períodos de armazenamento (0, 30, 60, 90 e 120 dias de armazenamento). Avaliou-se a porcentagem de germinação, a porcentagem de emergência, o Índice de Velocidade de Emergência, o Coeficiente de Variação no Tempo, o Tempo Médio da Emergência, os Índices de Incerteza e de Sincronia da Emergência e a Frequência Relativa da Emergência de plântulas. A cultivar Português se apresentou com os melhores índices de porcentagem de germinação, porcentagem de emergência, índice de velocidade de emergência, tempo médio da emergência e coeficiente de variação do tempo da emergência, quando as sementes foram armazenadas por até dias em ambiente não controlado. A cultivar Português é indicada aos produtores de jiló visando produção de mudas, pois se mostrou superior a cultivar Morro Grande quando armazenadas por até 30 dias em ambiente não controlado. Após 30 dias de armazenamento, a utilização de sementes das duas cultivares não é indicado, pois a porcentagem de germinação cai consideravelmente. Palavras-Chave: Fitotecnia. Produção de sementes. Armazenamento.Viabilidade.   Seed quality of scarlet eggplant stored in environmental conditions not controlled Abstract The sectors of production and conservation of seeds depend directly from studies that determine the best storage conditions and that consequently guarantee the longest possible period of maintenance of physiological quality of seed. In tropical regions, there is a major limitation regarding the maintenance of physiological quality during storage period mainly in uncontrolled environment, whose variation of environmental conditions can greatly influence the final quality of a seed lot. The objective of this final paper was to evaluate the quality of seeds of two cultivars of scarlet eggplant (Solanun gilo Raddi), stored in environmental conditions not controlled. The experimental design used was randomized blocks with 05 replications in a factorial 2 x 5, being two cultivars of scarlet eggplant (Morro Grande and Portuguese) and 05 storage periods (0, 30, 60, 90 and 120 days of storage). Was evaluated the Percentage of Germination, Percentage of Emergence, Emergence Speed Index, Coefficient of Variation of the Time, Average Time of Emergency, Indexes of Uncertainty and Sync the Emergence and Relative Frequency of Seedling Emergence in the time. The Portuguese cultivar presented the best rates of Germination Percentage, Emergency Percentage, Emergency Speed Index, Average Emergence Time and Emergence Time Variation Coefficient, when seeds were stored for up to 30 days in an uncontrolled environment. The Portugues cultivar is indicated to jiló producers aiming seedling production because it was superior to Morro Grande cultivar when stored for up to 30 days in an uncontrolled environment. After 30 days of storage, the use of seeds from both cultivars is not indicated because the germination percentage drops considerably.  Keywords: Phytotechny. Seed production. Storage. Viability.

Abstract Background Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) belongs to the family Solanaceae is one of the most popular and most processed vegetable crops worldwide with a great nutritional contribution to the human diet. Though the demand for tomato products is increasing, its production is constricted by shortage of quality seeds due mainly to lack of appropriate seed extraction method. Inadequate seed extraction method also causes extensive disease epidemics. Conversely, empirical evidences are scanty on instant and latent effects of seed extraction methods. This study was therefore initiated to evaluate the effects of extraction methods on the physiological quality of seeds and seedlings of tomato. Result Results revealed that the highest germination percent (99.33 and 89.76% under laboratory and field conditions respectively) was obtained at 2% HCl for 60 minutes. Whereas, the maximum weight of 1000 seeds (4.277 g) was found at 1% of HCl for 30 minutes. Mycoflora load was maximum (36%) at fermentation for 72 hours. Yet, no mycoflora was detected from higher concentrations of HCl acid greater than 2% and time durations longer than 60 minutes. Conclusion the major seed quality parameters such as seed germination percent, seedling length, seedling fresh weight, seedling dry weight, and vigour indices were significantly higher at extraction method of 2% HCl for 60 minutes. Thus, it can be concluded that the maximum physiological seed quality and best performance of seedlings of tomato obtained from 2% HCl for 60 minutes seed extraction method of tomato.

Mature seeds of three chickpea varieties like BARI Chhola-5, 6 and 8 were collected from three different branches like primary, secondary and tertiary, and were evaluated for quality in the Seed Technology Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur, Bangladesh during August to September of 2004 and 2005. All the seeds were stored in earthen pot for five months before conducting the laboratory study. Significant variation was observed in all three varieties of chickpea for all the parameters studied except seed vigour. The highest moisture percentage (10.17 in 2004 and 10.18 in 2005), dry weight (0.50 g in 2004 and 0.51 g in 2005) and seed vigour (39.7 in 2004 and 41.6 in 2005) was observed in BARI Chhola-8 and the lowest in BARI Chhola-5. Germination percentage was significantly higher in BARI Chhola-5 (87.6 in 2004 and 88.9 in 2005). Seeds of different branches did not vary significantly for most of the parameters. However, seeds of primary or secondary branches had higher moisture and germination percentage, dry weight of seedling and seed vigour. Interaction effects of varieties and seeds of different branch had no definite trend though non-significant effect was observed in most of the parameters. Production of high quality seeds depends upon the appropriate time of harvest. In this study, variation in physiological seed quality in relation to maturity stage was assessed in two pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) cultivars (Legon 18 and BAG 14/001) which have different fruit shapes and sizes. Fruits were harvested at four maturity stages (i.e. initially ripe, half ripe, fully ripe and rotten) and seeds extracted after each harvest. Seed quality was assessed by 100-seed weight, seed vigour and germination percentage. The results showed that the seeds extracted at the initially ripe stage had the lowest 100-seed weight in both cultivars. Whereas, seeds extracted at the fully ripe and rotten stages gave higher vigour and germination percentage than those harvested at the initial and half ripe stage in both cultivars. Also, the seeds extracted from Legon 18 had higher viability than BAG 14/001 at all maturity stages.

Laboratory tests were carried out to study the effect of different fungicides i.e. Bavistin DF, Vitavax and Genuine 50WP on the seed quality of lentil during storage condition. After processing and drying, seeds were preserved separately with three fungicides at the rate of 2.5g kg-1 of seeds and stored in earthen pots till next planting time. The seed quality i.e. moisture content (%), germination rate (%), dry weight (g) of seedlings and vigour index were measured at the end of storage period. The average germination percentage of the initial seed lot was 90% and moisture content was 9%. Among the three fungicides, Bavistin DF showed higher values for germination percentage (91.3% in 2004 and 92.7% in 2005), dry weight (0.70 g in 2004 and 0.67 g in 2005) and vigour (63.8 in 2004 and 62.1 in 2005).Jahangirnagar University J. An experiment was carried out at Germplasm Centre and Plant Biotechnology Lab, Department of Horticulture, PSTU to evaluate the growth, seed yield and quality of hybrid F1 chilli (cv. Sonic) crossing male line (LTSL-004-M) and female line (LTSL-004-F) along the viability of productive seeds influenced by NPK fertilizers during the period from November 2015 to October 2016. Ten different treatments of NPK fertilizers were used. Result showed that all the characteristics except primary branches and1000 seed weight were influenced significantly due to the application of NPK fertilizers. The tallest plant (69.88 cm), more leaves plant–1 (2491.33), highest number of secondary branches plant-1, tertiary branches plant-1 (5.00 and 88.00, respectively), number of flowers and hybrid fruits plant–1 (1533.00 and 12.33, respectively) and weight of seeds (4.03 g plant–1) along with required more time (54.67 days) for flowering were obtained from the application of 145 kg N ha–1, 175 kg P ha–1 and 96 kg K ha–1 (T4) which produced the highest final seed yield of chilli (4.03 kg ha–1). Application of T5 and T9 showed the highest number of primary branches (2.33). In seed viability characteristics T9 treated seeds showed the highest germination (100, 97.33 and 94.97%) at 1st, (1 MAH - Month After Harvest), 2nd (2 MAH) and 3rd (4 MAH) observations, respectively. The T3 treated seeds performed well in respect of Seed Vigour Index (SVI) at 1st and 2nd observations (8.00 and 7.48, respectively) but T9 treated seeds showed the highest SVI (6.32) at 3rd observation. Above indicating all characteristics were lowest under only recommended doses of NPK T1 as control treatment except days to first flowering. The observations suggested that production of hybrid chilli seeds could be enhanced by applying T4. While seeds of chilli treated by T9 in field level showed long time viable. Application of 145 kg N ha–1, 175 kg P ha–1 and 96 kg K ha–1 may be suggested for seed production of chilli and 110 kg N ha–1, + 175 kg P ha–1 + 115 kg K ha–1 for keeping the long time seed viability. Seedling vigour is a key critical component to produce well-established canola (Brassica napus) seedlings under less than ideal conditions in western Canada. Our objective was to determine if seed lots from late October (fall) or early spring (April) seeding dates improve seed vigour relative to mid-May (May) seeding dates. We compared seed size, seed maturity, germination percentage, and seedling emergence under controlled-environment conditions from six seed lots obtained from fall-sown (1997, 1998), April-sown (1998, 1999) and May-sown canola (1998, 1999) cv. Quest. On average, 80% of fall-derived seed for both years was larger than 1.7 mm compared to only 32% for May-derived canola seed. April-derived seed was intermediate. Fall and April derived seed were considered 40% mature compared to 16% for May-derived seed. In germination tests at 8°C, May derived seed germinated and emerged slower with a lower total germination percentage compared to falland April-derived seed lots. Priming reduced differences in emergence between the seed lots. Field studies at Scott, SK, sown in the fall of 1999 and 2000, and in early May of 2000 demonstrated that seed derived from fall- and April-sown canola produced higher plant densities, higher biomass at bolting, and higher seed yield than seed derived from May-sown canola. Yield was 10 to 45% less from seed derived from May-sown canola than seed derived from fall- and April-sown canola. This study established the impact of seeding date on seed quality and vigour, which in turn affected emergence, seedling vigour and yield. Loss of seed quality in soybean is a serious problem in tropical and subtropical region. Foliar application of salicylic acid (SA), GA3 and acetyl salicylic acid (50 ppm) at seedling and pod filling stage, K2HPO4 (2%), a-tocopherol (100 ppm) at flowering and pod filling stage was done on soybean varieties – NRC 7 and JS 335. Foliar application of SA showed positive effect on seed yield, seed health, germination and seed vigour during storage. Plant height was significantly improved by the GA3 spray in both the varieties. Significantly higher seed yield was obtained with foliar spray of a-tocopherol. Application of SA was found effective to protect plants from various diseases to get quality seed. a-Tocopherol and K2HPO4 treatment significantly reduced MDA production in seeds. a-Tocopherol application increased super oxide dismutase activity as a result the lipid peroxidation of seed during storage was significantly reduced. Application of a-tocopherol, K2HPO4 and salicylic acid improved the storage or keeping quality of soybean seed.
