Most UK child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) support young people up to the age of 17/18, at which point they are discharged, or transition to an adult service. This transition is often difficult for young people, as they also face the complex physical and psychosocial changes of adolescence. Transition from CAMHS is often poorly managed, with negative outcomes for young people. Improved preparation may improve both outcomes and experience. We worked with 17 young people and staff from three NHS mental health foundation trusts to co-produce the CAMHS Transition Preparation Programme (TPP), deliverable in routine NHS settings. We took a creative, participatory approach to maximize young people's involvement in the research. Young people steered the direction of the work, and were involved in decision-making and dissemination both nationally and within their trusts. In this commentary, two young participant–researchers and one NHS staff member describe the project from their perspectives.

BACKGROUND Digital tools have the potential to support patient activation and shared decision making in the face of increasing levels of mental health problems in young people. There is a need for feasibility trials of digital interventions to determine the usage and acceptability of interventions. In addition, there is a need to determine the ability to recruit and retain research participants to plan rigorous effectiveness trials and therefore, develop evidence-based recommendations for practice. OBJECTIVE To determine the feasibility of undertaking a cluster randomized control trial to test the effectiveness of a smartphone app, Power Up, co-designed with young people to support patient activation and shared decision making for mental health. METHODS Overall, 270 young people were screened for participation and 53% (N = 142) were recruited and completed baseline measures across eight specialist child mental health services (n = 62, mean (SD) age = 14.66 (1.99) years, 52% female) and two mainstream secondary schools (n = 80; mean (SD) age = 16.88 (0.68) years, 46% female). Young people received Power Up in addition to management as usual or received management as usual only. Post-trial interviews were conducted with 11 young people from the intervention arms (specialist services n = 6; schools n = 5). RESULTS Usage data showed that there were an estimated 50 (out of 64) users of Power Up in the intervention arms. Findings from the interviews indicated that young people found Power Up to be acceptable. Young people reported: 1) their motivation for use of Power Up, 2) the impact of use, and 3) barriers to use. Out of the 142 recruited participants, 45% (64/142) completed follow up measures, and the approaches to increase retention agreed by the steering group are discussed. CONCLUSIONS The findings of the present research indicate that the app is acceptable and it is feasible to examine the effectiveness of Power Up in a prospective cluster randomized control trial. Purpose The story of youth mental health remains poorly understood. To truly progress our understanding of youth mental health, we must shift our focus from one in which young people are the subjects, or “characters”, of research efforts to one in which they are active agents, or “authors”. This change in dynamic falls under the banner of public and patient involvement (PPI), a growing movement that emphasises the meaningful involvement of the public in health research. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach Here, the authors aim to stimulate this shift in focus by describing emerging practices of youth involvement in paediatric research and outlining how such practices can be extended to the domain of youth mental health. In particular, the authors highlight Young Persons’ Advisory Groups (YPAG), through which young people can be involved in an active, meaningful and mutually beneficial manner, at each step in the research life cycle. Findings A YPAG comprises young people who act as research partners, providing guidance on a range of activities. In the health domain, YPAGs have provided fresh perspectives, generated valuable knowledge and changed attitudes about youth involvement in research. Moreover, they provide young people with genuine opportunities to shape research so that it addresses issues they encounter in their everyday lives. Originality/value The establishment of youth mental health YPAGs will enhance the authors’ research questions, design, delivery and impact. The authors outline how researchers can embrace PPI and work together with young people to tell a different story of youth mental health.

This book examines a participatory approach in child protection practices in Norway and the United States, exploring ways of empowering children. The book shows how children can be encouraged to develop and express their own opinions and explores tools for child protection workers to negotiate complex boundaries around the inclusion of children in decision-making. The goal of the book is to show in what ways child protection caseworkers employed by public child protection agencies in Norway and the United States can create citizens by promoting the participation of children and young people in their everyday practice. Public child protection agencies are only one part of the citizenship piece, but they are a salient one in the lives of children and young people who encounter them. Child protection caseworkers working in public child protection agencies, make very important decisions about children and young people's lives and provide children, youth, and families with pertinent services. The book presents valuable insights from front-line child protection professionals' unique perspectives and experiences within two very different systems, and evaluates the impacts of different organizational practices in promoting children's participation.

Participatory research is collaborative and democratic, and may be particularly engaging for vulnerable or so-called hard-to-reach groups. In this paper, we describe three creative participatory projects carried out over five years with young people and NHS, social care and third sector partners. Working with young people in care we co-produced a trilogy of films, one of which won the young people a British Film Institute (BFI) award. The films are now used for training throughout the UK. With young people with experience of depression, we coproduced a short, animated film which aimed to offer support to other young people who may be depressed and not know where to turn. Finally, with young people attending or leaving NHS child and adolescent mental health services, we co-produced a transition preparation programme for those leaving the service at 17 or 18. For all the projects, the aim was to maximize involvement and give young people some ownership of the research. We outline our approach and describe some of the challenges and limitations.
