Abstract The concentration of human activities in coastal cities results in the increase of nutrient salts released into the coastal environment and is identified as a major environmental problem for coastal zone management. Large amounts of nitrogen and phosphorus are transported by rainwater-runoff from urban catchments to coastal zones during episodic rainfall events inducing eutrophication problems and increasing the risk of red tide occurrence. This study used a coupled model based on the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) and Environment Fluid Dynamic Code (EFDC) to simulate the rainfall-runoff pollution load and its effects on eutrophication in Shenzhen Bay, southern China. A storm event of 2014 was used to build the modeling scenarios and thus analyzed the spatial-temporal variation of the rainfall-runoff pollution. The results indicated that: (i) rainfall-runoff pollution loads accounted for 60–80% of the total pollution loads, and rainfall-runoff pollution can result in a short-term impact pollution load on the receiving seawater body; (ii) the transportation of nutrient salts in the coastal zone and the nutrient salts absorbing process by algae are at different times, which suggests urban rainfall-runoff pollution has evidently an effect on variation of the concentration of chlorophyll-A in the bay, and with increasing distance to the city, the seawater body is gradually less affected by rainfall-runoff pollution.

Industrial transfer is reshaping the geographic layout of industries and facilitating the transfer and spread of environmental pollution. This study employs the pollution transfer estimation method to discuss the environmental effect of industrial transfer. By compiling statistics on industries of a certain scale according to time-series data, the researchers compute the pollution load generated by industrial transfer and the difference in pollution emissions for each region and industry. Through the constructed evaluation model, the empirical scope is Jiangsu, which is the most developed industry in China. The results reveal that there is an apparent spatial hierarchy among the transferred industries in Jiangsu. Most industries transfer from the southern Jiangsu region toward the central Jiangsu and northern Jiangsu regions. Environmental pollution is redistributed among prefecture-level cities because of intercity industrial transfer; the spatial characteristics of pollution exhibit a notable hierarchical pattern. Furthermore, the transferred pollution load differs considerably between industries. The textile industry and chemical raw material and chemical product industry are mainly transferred toward the Central Jiangsu and Northern Jiangsu regions, whereas the papermaking and paper product manufacturing industry is primarily redistributed to the Southern Jiangsu region. The empirical results can serve as a reference for analyzing the environmental pollution effects of regional industrial transfer.

The current demand for a wireless electromagnetic spectrum is higher than ever before due to rapid technological development in the field of information and communication technologies that has resulted in monumental growth in data-centric services. The usage of idle TV channels in the Television Ultra High Frequencies (TV-UHF) band (500–698 MHz), also known as Television White Spaces (TVWS), is a relatively new and promising concept for wireless connectivity that can be used to cater to the demand. A challenge in this setting is to figure out a fast and cost-effective method of TVWS presence estimation, such as the use of open hardware and software tools, reducing sensing time. This article proposes a Rapid Estimation Method (REM) for TVWS estimation that uses the statistical information of the sensed signals. Our probabilistic approach analyzes the collected parameters of more than eight million data samples taken by scanning the TV-UHF spectrum in the city of Windsor, ON, Canada. The calculated statistical parameters and a group of auxiliary parameters were combined to estimate rapidly the amount of TVWS available in the sensed locations. By applying the proposed rapid estimation method, the presence of TVWS was identified and verified with an accuracy of about 76% according to the results obtained, the average variation when comparing the calculated and detected probabilities of TVWS was in a range of 15%, and the method could be a viable solution to the spectrum need.
