Objective: To quantify the color variation of two glass ionomer cements and a composite resin used in pediatric dentistry, after being immersed in different pigments agents. Methods: Using two glass ionomer cements (Ketac(tm) Molar and Photac(tm) Fil) and a microhybrid composite resin (Filtek(tm) z250), were produced 40 disks of each material (10 mm in diameter and 2 mm thick). The samples were soaked in artificial saliva (control group), coke, peach Ice Tea(r) and chocolate milk, for 72 hours in an oven at 37ºC. After this period, the samples were washed in 50 ml of distilled water. Finally, using the spectrophotometer, it was made the reading of results. The color change was measured according to the CIE L * a * b * system. Color changes were statistically analyzed using parametric one-way ANOVA and ANOVA with Welch correction, the nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis tests and post-hoc Tukey and Dunnet T3 with p≤ 0.05. Results: The immersion of restorative materials in different pigmentation agents caused a significant color variation on the samples. The agent who presented higher results was the Peach Ice Tea(r). The chocolate milk was the fluid with lowest pigmentation capacity of all restorative materials under study. The greater color variation was found on the Ketac(tm) Molar submerged in Coca-Cola(r) and the smallest on the Filtek(tm) z250 in chocolate milk. Conclusion: All restorative materials were shown to be susceptible to pigmentation by all agents. The Filtek(tm) z250 proved to have better color stability, followed by Photac(tm) Fil and finally by Ketac(tm) Molar.

Secondary caries are a worldwide public and socioeconomic problem. The placement of restorations can lead to the development of environmental conditions favorable to microbial colonization, especially on the tooth/restoration interface, which is a predisposing factor for secondary caries. The aim of this study was to evaluate microbial retention on conventional (Chelon-Fil and Vidrion R) and resin-modified (Vitremer and Fuji II LC) glass-ionomer cements, in situ, using a hybrid composite resin (Z100) as a control. Twelve volunteers wore Hawley appliances with specimens made of all tested filling materials for 7 days. The specimens were then removed from the appliances and transferred to tubes containing 2.0 ml of Ringer-PRAS. Microorganisms from the samples were inoculated onto blood agar and Mitis Salivarius Bacitracin agar and incubated under anaerobiosis (90% N2, 10% CO2), at 37°C, for 10 and 2 days, respectively. The resin-modified glass-ionomer cements and the composite resin retained the same levels of microorganisms on their surfaces. The resin-modified glass-ionomers retained less mutans streptococci than the composite resin and conventional glass-ionomer cements. The conventional glass-ionomer cements retained less mutans streptococci than the composite resin, but that difference was not statistically significant.

The aim of the study is to compare the fluoride release and recharge properties of glass ionomer cements and ‘alkasite’.<br/>Specimens of two glass ionomer cements (Fuji Ⅸ GP and Riva Self Cure), ‘alkasite’ restorative material (Cention N) and composite resin (Filtek<sup>TM</sup> Z350XT) were prepared. The fluoride release of each specimen was measured for 28 days. Thereafter, 1.23% acidulated phosphate fluoride (APF) gel was applied to experimental groups. No treatment was performed on control groups. The fluoride release was measured for additional 7 days to evaluate the fluoride recharge properties of each materials.<br/>The fluoride release was highest in Riva Self Cure, followed by Fuji Ⅸ GP, Cention N (<i>p</i> < 0.05). Fluoride release of Cention N was measured to be approximately 49% of Fuji Ⅸ GP’s. After the application of 1.23% APF gel, increases in fluoride release were observed in Riva Self Cure, Fuji Ⅸ GP and Cention N (<i>p</i> < 0.05). Fluoride recharge was observed in Cention N as well as in glass ionomer cements. Further studies are required to evaluate the anti-cariogenic properties of Cention N at clinical conditions.
