Nurturing hope: From climate-change worriers to eco-warriors

Young people are worried about the impacts that climate change will have on their lives. Educators need learning programmes that can help students to manage these dark emotions and become more positive about their future. Including emotions in climate-change education is now considered a crucial element and hope, in particular, has been identified as a motivating force which can help young people to become more positive and take action to respond to the climate emergency. Drawing on recommendations from the environmental-education field, as well as peace and political studies education research, eight strategies and approaches are proposed. These approaches and strategies can nurture hope and develop knowledge and skills, so that students can take action to mitigate climate change effects and feel hopeful about their future.

Since 2016, STP has been funding the implementation of greenhouses, viewed as a viable way to guarantee, increase, and diversify production; supply the market; improve farmers' incomes; and mitigate climate change impacts. The greenhouses in selected districts were based on farmers' experiences in horticultural production, available agricultural area, and capacity of rural communities to organize themselves into small farmers' cooperatives. There are also private greenhouse initiatives. This chapter analyzed the current situation of the STP greenhouse project and its socioeconomic contribution to rural communities, proposing actions for its improvement, addressing climate changes and poverty reduction. Despite several weaknesses, mainly linked to lack of knowledge and mastery of technology, greenhouse production represents a viable alternative for horticulture development. Greenhouses, properly exploited, are a mechanism to mitigate climate change effects and ensure an increase in income and consequently reduce poverty and improve individual and collective living conditions.

Environmental education plays a fundamental role in the fight against climate change and the transformation towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly socio-economic model. This study shows how to evaluate the effectiveness of a program for compulsory education students in Spain. The subject of the program focused on the effects of climate change in relation to our consumption model and the generation of waste. A mixed research methodology is proposed that combines a quantitative (10 items on the Likert scale, n = 714) and qualitative approach (category construction and analysis on open-ended questions). A study of the reliability and validity of the measure was carried out through a categorical principal component analysis (CATPCA). The multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) correlates the gender and educational level of the students to the learning acquired in the program. For example, the results show how students are convinced that adopting minimal pro-environmental habits (turning off lights and unplugging electronics, choosing public transport to get around, or using solar and wind power to produce electricity) can help mitigate climate change. The conclusions show the difficulties and challenges of education for responsible consumption, emphasizing the development of environmental education programs for reducing the effects of climate change.

Ratkaisukeskeisen ilmastokasvatuksen tavoitteena on oppia tietoja ja taitoja, joiden avulla opitaan vähentämään ilmastopäästöjä ja sopeutumaan ilmastonmuutokseen parhaalla mahdollisella tavalla. Ilmastonmuutoksen hillintä ja siihen sopeutuminen vaatii onnistuessaan myös tunteiden huomioon ottamista. Ilmastokasvatuksessa toivon ylläpitäminen on mahdollista merkityksiä luovien toimintastrategioiden avulla. Oleellista on, että oppija pohtii tekojensa merkityksellisyyttä, minkä avulla voidaan välttää toiveajattelua. Alakoulussa ilmastokasvatus perustuu tutkivaan oppimiseen ja dialogiseen, oppijan arkikäsityksen huomioon ottavaan vuorovaikutukseen. Vuorovaikutuksellinen opetus sitouttaa oppijat opetukseen. Artikkelissa pohditaan ilmastokasvatuksen toteutumista alakoulun oppilaiden näkökulmasta. Tutkimuksen aineisto kerättiin avoimella kyselylomakkeella kahdeksasta alakoulun luokasta, viidestä eri koulusta. Tutkimusaineisto koostuu 152 oppilaan vastauksista. Vastaukset analysoitiin laadullisella sisällönanalyysillä ja teemoitettiin fenomenografisesti eri käsitekategorioihin. Käsitekategoriat muodostuivat neljästä teemasta: 1) Uuden oppimisesta, 2) kiinnostuksen lisääntymisestä, 3) ilmaston-muutokseen liittyvästä toivosta ja 4) ilmastonmuutokseen liittyvästä surusta.   Primary school pupils' experiences on the implementation of intentional climate change education: observations on learning and emotions Abstract The goal of intentional climate change education is to learn the knowledge and skills to reduce climate emissions and adapt to climate change in the best possible way. Mitigating and adapting to climate change also requires taking emotions into account. In climate change education hope is possible to maintain through meaningful coping strategies. It is essential that the learner reflects on the significance of his or her actions and thus avoids unnecessary wishful thinking. In primary school, climate education is based on inquiry-based learning and dialogical interaction that considers the learner's everyday thinking. Interactive learning process helps to engage learners. This article considers the implementation of climate education from the perspective of primary school pupils. The research material was collected with an open questionnaire from eight primary school classes from five different schools. The research material consists of 152 pupils’ answers. The responses were analysed by qualitative content analysis and were phenomenographically themed into different concept categories. The concept categories consisted of four themes: 1) learning from the new, 2) increasing interest, 3) hope related to climate change, and 4) grief related to climate change. Nowadays, the importance of implementing energy efficiency (EE) measures is growing significantly worldwide, based on its potential to reduce energy demands and mitigate climate change effects. Paraguay is a developing country with the highest per capita hydroelectric energy generation in the world, but only 18% of local consumption is hydroelectric and 41% of its energy matrix corresponds to oil products. This paper aims to analyse the importance the Country places on EE as a strategy towards sustainable development and to highlight as EE is an effective pathway to mitigate the climate changes and contrast their effects. The authors initially provide an insight into the climate scenarios for Paraguay and underline the effects of the climate changes on the buildings’ comfort. Subsequently, the authors provide, by resourcing a bibliographic review, a description of the Paraguayan sectors of greater energy consumption, its policies and targets set for increasing EE. Besides, the main EE projects developed by other neighbouring South American countries are analysed to show the level of development of each one in the scope of EE and to offer a reference basis of potential virtuous solutions to be adopted in Paraguay. A focus on the building sector is also made to provide a foundation for policy analyses to enhance EE in this sector. As a result of this review, evidence that EE is beginning to take part in Paraguay’s public policies was found, with the leaders becoming aware of its importance. Nevertheless, many concrete results could not be achieved as of yet and overcoming these barriers still involve a great challenge. Regarding the building sector, few advances have been noticed regarding the regulations of buildings’ thermal performance, a reason for which the National objectives set need to be more specific to achieve greater collective awareness to enforce them. Finally, key actions are recommended for Paraguay aiming to improve EE levels to face the climate change phenomenon.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine the extent of climate change awareness among the rural farmers of Northern Cross River state, investigate the gender role analyzes of some daily routine activities carried out by these rural farmers, ascertain the difference in workload burden of the impacts of climate change between men and women, identify the strategies adopted by these rural farmers to mitigate the effects of climate change in their agricultural activities and investigate the roles Environmental Education (EE) can play in helping the rural farmers to design and adopt sustainable adaptation and mitigation strategies to reduce or completely eradicate their vulnerability to climate change effects. Design/methodology/approach The research design adopted for this study is the cross-sectional survey method. Five research questions guided the study. Two sets of instruments were used for data collection, a sample of 1,258 respondents (0.1%) were selected for the study. The researchers personally administered the instruments and collected the same back, two instruments were not properly filled, so they were rejected. Findings The finding of the study revealed that rural farmers have some level of climate change awareness, which they got from radio, newspapers, awareness campaigns, flyers, billboards, among others. Six out of the nine strategies listed were adopted by the rural farmers to mitigate climate change effects among these rural farmers. There is a significant difference in gender workload burden between women and male in the area, the result is positively skewed toward women, implying that the burden of workload for women increased over those of men. The result also shows that EE can influence their attitude toward climate change through awareness creation, knowledge provisions and also encourage members participation in climate change effect mitigation, prevention and adaptation. Research limitations/implications With this result, EE can be used as a tool for the creation of knowledge, awareness, attitude and encourage the participation of these rural farmers toward mitigating and prevention climate change effects among these rural farmers. It was recommended among others that deliberate policies should be designed to make EE help create the needed awareness on climate change, beginning from the causes, effects and mitigation strategies among rural farmers in their community. Practical implications Already, most Environmental Educators have been trained, the government should design and formulate practical policies to use them as extension agent on climate change effort to go to these rural communities and create the needed awareness, knowledge, skills and attitude to help them combat climate change effects including trees and cover crops planting and also re-introducing the use of irrigation agriculture in these farming communities. Social implications With the creation of awareness, social groups and individuals can also make a social investment from these activities and also improve their social capitals, thereby reducing social burdens and improving their living conditions within the rural settings. Originality/value This research is an original research paper from the effort. the purpose is to assess the extent of climate change awareness level and how the effects of climate change increase or reduces the burden of gender workload among rural farmers and the strategies which can be used by these rural farmers to prevent, mitigate and adapt to climate change effects and the roles EE can play. This study has an original value in the sense that in the course of the study, the study hardly saw articles on these specific variables in whole research, hence the resolve to assess these variables.
