The English Language Learning Progressions (ELLP): Challenge or opportunity?

This article provides an overview and critical analysis of The English Language Learning Progressions (ELLP) (Ministry of Education, 2008). Identifying main themes through critical policy analysis, this review seeks to place ELLP in context through a comparison with The English Language Learning Framework: Draft (Ministry of Education, 2005) and English Language Learning Progressions (ELLP ) Pathway Years 1–8 (Ministry of Education, 2020a). Within this review, the structure of ELLP is explored along with key ideas and claims. It is argued that there are both challenges and opportunities in ELLP. Finally, the key issues are summarised and suggestions are made for future research.

The advent of technology has influenced education, even in the most remote parts of the world. Nowadays, it is totally normal for a person to have some technological devices such as laptops, iPads, tablets, and especially cell phones. Ecuador is not far from this reality. Moreover, in the English Language Learning Standards, the Ministry of Education suggests using technological resources in teaching (eg internet, software, computers and related devices). Given this warm welcome to the use of technology in Ecuador’s English classes, as well as the number of students using cell phones in Ecuador, this chapter is intended to provide basic information on the use of cell phone games within English class.

This paper outlines a procedure for language textbook analysis from the perspective of second language acquisition (SLA) principles using a minimally modified version of Littlejohn’s three-level framework by Guilloteaux as a preliminary procedure to textbook evaluation for selection. The aim is to analyze to what extent does Indonesian ELT textbook for grade XI reflects the universal SLA principles. The universal SLA principles used as material analysis criteria in this paper were drawn from the literature selected by Guilloteaux. This analysis revealed that the Indonesian ELT textbook by the Ministry of Education and Culture reflected SLA principles closely. Although only in-use evaluation can determine the extent to which this textbook actually supports language acquisition, the evidence suggests that the textbook is potentially supportive to English language learning.

Studies on gender differences in mobile English learning are in their initial stages. College English IV, designed by a number of professors and engineers in a university in China, serves as a mobile English learning platform. This study aims to determine gender differences in cognitive loads, attitudes, and academic achievements in English language learning assisted with this mobile English learning platform. Through a mixed research design, 79 randomly selected participants join the research, together with interviews and posts to collect qualitative data. Cognitive loads, attitudes, and academic achievements are measured through related scales to collect quantitative data. It is concluded that there are significant gender differences in cognitive loads, attitudes, and academic achievements in English language learning assisted with the mobile learning platform. Future research on gender differences in mobile English learning should also examine relationships between gender differences, learner motivation, achievement goals, and learning outcomes.

Despite of the many changes in the English language learning curriculum in Iraq, teaching English to school students is not just challenging but rather unsuccessful in terms of creating pupils with both a good competence and an accurate performance. The learning process is being replaced with a merely passing one grade to another process with the blessing of no serious effort to locate and solve such a problem,which would result in an illiterate generation in an English language oriented cultures. There are many reasons for such a problem,one of which is the tendency of most English language teachers to treat content of the curriculum as a structure based material, also there are other factors like; the repetition of the same grammatical rules through our the different stages of school years and the predictable questions used,even in high school final exam.Therefor I would like to propose a three –step plan to overcome these difficulties.The first step is to design a functional based curriculum which presents no syntactical rules in the early years of learning English language but only concentrates on communicative and interacting skills. The second step is to use " pedagogical wheel " as a course given in college in a pre-training program for teachers, the third step of our model is to create a reference in the Ministry of Education to connect with all English teachers and provide updated information, advises,aids and share experience among them. The use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) and mobile devices to assist language acquisition has expanded rapidly during the past decade given the prevalence of broadband networks and mobile phones. Many studies have examined how these technologies can facilitate English-language learning. The chapter will discuss the current research on using ICTs to create e-portfolios to support language learning, the role of mobile devices in the language-learning process, the impact of using ICTs on English-language learners' (ELLs) learning other than language acquisition (e.g., increasing their sense of a learning community), and the design procedure of such a learning environment. Future research in this area also will be discussed.

English language learning has become a rising topic in the Malaysian Education system as it is unable to develop fluent users among Malaysians. This leads to a question on what are the reasons behind the retardation of Ministry of Education Malaysia regarding the learning of English as a Second Language (ESL) in the country. Hence, this study was carried out to explore English language learning experienced by Iban secondary ESL learners in Saratok, Sarawak, as the ethnic is one of the majority population in Malaysia. This is a case study, and the data were gained through semi-structured interview sessions. A set of interview questions comprise of 2 sections were distributed. English language learning and the process involved while acquiring and learning the language at school were explored among three Iban secondary ESL learners. The findings revealed that the Iban learners had a positive attitude towards English language learning by applying various strategies while learning the language in a supportive and convenience classroom’s environment. The findings of this study benefit the language teachers as their source of reference in planning their lesson by selecting appropriate approaches and strategies that cater to learners’ needs and preferences to facilitate their learning of English language.

This study aimed to explore whether the Parenting Authority Questionnaire (PAQ) relates significantly to the English language achievement of grade one senior high school (G1SHS) students in Mashhad, Iran. To this end, the PAQ designed by Buri (1991) was translated into Persian and administered to three hundred and nineteen students in two versions dealing with their fathers and mothers’ parenting separately. Inspired by the microstructural approach of schema theory, the PAQ was treated as a measure of parenting domain while its three sections were adopted as its authoritarian, authoritative and permissive genera. The students’ performance on the PAQ and its three sections were correlated with their scores obtained on the final English examination (FEE) held nationally at the end of grade three junior high schools. The results showed that not only the parenting domain but also its authoritarian, authoritative and permissive genera correlate significantly with English achievement at different degrees and in opposite directions. The findings are discussed and suggestions are made for future research.

Different new media tools like Facebook, blogs, wikis, Google docs and YouTube are perceived to have effects on English language (L2) learner motivation at the tertiary level in Bangladesh. However, the effects of new media usage on L2 learner motivation are not defined yet in the context. This study investigates the effects of new media usage on L2 learner motivation at the tertiary level. A qualitative research design is used throughout the study to collect and analyze the data. Data were collected through six Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with 30 tertiary level English language learners from eight universities located in Bangladesh. The findings of the study show that new media usage in English language learning motivates learners immensely, transforms dependent and passive learners into active and autonomous learners, makes them participatory, engaging and enthusiastic in learning, and works as a supplement to the classroom teachings. However, culturally inappropriate and wrong interpretation of some language contents in new media tools demotivates learners. Therefore, the usage of new media tools in enhancing learner motivation needs to be keenly monitored to reduce adverse effects. The study recommends future research to be conducted to assess the negative washback of new media usage affecting L2 learners.
