AbstractIn the Big Data era, every sector has adapted to technological development to service the vast amount of information available. In this way, each field has benefited from technological improvements over the years. The cultural and artistic field was no exception, and several studies contributed to the aim of the interaction between human beings and artistic-cultural heritage. In this scenario, systems able to analyze the current situation and recommend the right services play a crucial role. In particular, in the Recommender Systems field, Context-Awareness helps to improve the recommendations provided. This article aims to present a general overview of the introduction of Context analysis techniques in Recommender Systems and discuss some challenging applications to the Cultural Heritage field.

Point-of-Interest recommendation is an increasing research and developing area within the widely adopted technologies known as Recommender Systems. Among them, those that exploit information coming from Location-Based Social Networks (LBSNs) are very popular nowadays and could work with different information sources, which pose several challenges and research questions to the community as a whole. We present a systematic review focused on the research done in the last 10 years about this topic. We discuss and categorize the algorithms and evaluation methodologies used in these works and point out the opportunities and challenges that remain open in the field. More specifically, we report the leading recommendation techniques and information sources that have been exploited more often (such as the geographical signal and deep learning approaches) while we also alert about the lack of reproducibility in the field that may hinder real performance improvements.

Social networks constitute a valuable source for documenting heritage constitution processes or obtaining a real-time snapshot of a cultural heritage research topic. Many heritage researchers use social networks as a social thermometer to study these processes, creating, for this purpose, collections that constitute born-digital archives potentially reusable, searchable, and of interest to other researchers or citizens. However, retrieval and archiving techniques used in social networks within heritage studies are still semi-manual, being a time-consuming task and hindering the reproducibility, evaluation, and open-up of the collections created. By combining Information Retrieval strategies with emerging archival techniques, some of these weaknesses can be left behind. Specifically, pooling is a well-known Information Retrieval method to extract a sample of documents from an entire document set (posts in case of social network’s information), obtaining the most complete and unbiased set of relevant documents on a given topic. Using this approach, researchers could create a reference collection while avoiding annotating the entire corpus of documents or posts retrieved. This is especially useful in social media due to the large number of topics treated by the same user or in the same thread or post. We present a platform for applying pooling strategies combined with expert judgment to create cultural heritage reference collections from social networks in a customisable, reproducible, documented, and shareable way. The platform is validated by building a reference collection from a social network about the recent attacks on patrimonial entities motivated by anti-racist protests. This reference collection and the results obtained from its preliminary study are available for use. This real application has allowed us to validate the platform and the pooling strategies for creating reference collections in heritage studies from social networks.

Abstract Considering the cultural relevance of ICH and its meanings for communities, and the fact that it is increasingly becoming an asset of destinations in promoting tourism, the use of ICH in social networks must be put in the spotlight to identify best practices of transmitting the meanings of ICH through social networks. An analysis of the use of ICH in the context of social networks will also illuminate which particular tourist image is being transmitted by the various agents and stakeholders that interact with social networks. In this vein, this chapter will present a case study based on the Fête de l'Ours, a celebration performed in three rural villages in the south of France, looking at how it is explained within a particular social network, namely, Instagram. In this way, the case study will aim to: (i) identify the elements of the festivity that are highlighted by locals and visitors in their Fête de l'Ours account on Instagram; and (ii) analyse how locals, visitors and stakeholders explain and share the experience of the festival.

Location-based recommender systems (LBRSs) are gaining importance with the proliferation of location-based services provided by mobile devices as well as user-generated content in social networks. Collaborative approaches for recommendation rely on the opinions of like-minded people, so-called neighbours, for prediction. Thus, an adequate selection of such neighbours becomes essential for achieving good prediction results. The aim of this work is to explore different strategies to select neighbours in the context of a collaborative filtering–based recommender system for POI (places of interest) recommendations. Whereas standard methods are based on user similarity to delimit a neighbourhood, in this work several strategies are proposed based on direct social relationships and geographical information extracted from location-based social networks (LBSNs). The impact of the different strategies proposed has been evaluated and compared against the traditional collaborative filtering approach using a dataset from a popular network as Foursquare. In general terms, the proposed strategies for selecting neighbours based on the different elements available in a LBSN achieve better results than the traditional collaborative filtering approach. Our findings can be helpful both to researchers in the recommender systems area and to recommender system developers in the context of LBSNs, since they can take into account our results to design and provide more effective services considering the huge amount of knowledge produced in LBSNs.

Recommender systems are one of the fields of information filtering systems that have attracted great research interest during the past several decades and have been utilized in a large variety of applications, from commercial e-shops to social networks and product review sites. Since the applicability of these applications is constantly increasing, the size of the graphs that represent their users and support their functionality increases too. Over the last several years, different approaches have been proposed to deal with the problem of scalability of recommender systems’ algorithms, especially of the group of Collaborative Filtering (CF) algorithms. This article studies the problem of CF algorithms’ parallelization under the prism of graph sparsity, and proposes solutions that may improve the prediction performance of parallel implementations without strongly affecting their time efficiency. We evaluated the proposed approach on a bipartite product-rating network using an implementation on Apache Spark.
