In the current scenario, the development of high strength and low weight material is the demand of the aerospace defence organizations. Magnesium alloy based composite has low density, good mechanical and physical properties. In this study, magnesium alloy AZ31B is used as reinforcement material and graphene nanoparticle is used as reinforcement material. Stir casting technique is used for the development of composite material. Three weight percentages i.e. 0.4%, 0.8% and 1.2% are used for the casting. The microstructural analysis is performed to validate the presence of graphene particles in the developed composite. Further mechanical properties such as tensile strength, hardness and toughness are evaluated. Experimental results confirm that GNPs particles are uniformly distributed into the matrix material. It was observed that due to the reinforcement of GNPs particles tensile strength of the material is improved by 31.17%, hardness is improved about 46.9%. However, the peak value of toughness is observed 12.6 Jule/cm2 in the matrix material, it decreases by increasing the wt% of reinforcement particle and lowest value of toughness of 6.82 Jule/cm2 is observed in AZ31B/1.2%GNP composite.

Alumnium alloy LM 25 based composites reinforced with boron carbide at different weight fractions of 4%, 8%, and 12% were fabricated by stir casting technique. The microstructures and morphology of the fabricated composites were studied by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. Elemental mapping of all fabricated composites were done to demonstrate the elements present in the matrix and fabricated composites. The results of microstructural analyses reveal homogenous dispersion of reinforcement particles in the matrix with some little amount of clustering found in composites reinforced with 12% wt. of boron carbide. The mechanical characterization is done for both alloy LM 25 and all fabricated composites based on hardness and tensile strength. The hardness increased from 13.6% to 21.31% and tensile strength 6.4% to 22.8% as reinforcement percentage of boron carbide particles increased from 0% to 12% wt. A fractured surface mapping was also done for all composites.

PurposeThis article aims to study the tensile properties of a functionally graded composite structure with Al–18wt%Si alloy as the matrix material and silicon carbide (SiC) particles as the reinforcing element. More specifically, the study's primary objective is to optimize the composition of the material elements using a robust statistical approach.Design/methodology/approachIn this research, the composite material is fabricated using a combination of stir casting and the centrifugal casting technique. Moreover, the test specimen required to study the tensile strength are prepared according to the ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) standards. Eventually, optimal composition to maximize the tensile property of the material is determined using the mixture design approach.FindingsThe investigation results imply that the addition of the SiC plays a crucial role in increasing the tensile strength of the composite. The optical microstructural images of the composite show the adequate distribution of the reinforcing particles with the matrix. The proposed regression model shows better predictability of tensile strength. In addition, the methodology aids in optimizing the mixture component values to maximize the tensile strength of the produced functionally graded composite structure.Originality/valueLittle work has been reported so far where a hypereutectic Al–Si alloy is considered the matrix material to produce the composite structure. The article attempts to make a composite structure by using a combination of stir casting and centrifugal casting. Furthermore, it employs the mixture design to optimize the composition and predict the model of the study, which is one of a kind in the field of material science.

Microstructural Analysis plays an important role in enhancing the mechanical properties of metals and composites. Usually Aluminium Silicon Carbide (Al6063/SiC) alloys are mixed with strontium, sodium and antimony for high durability even though they are toxic and costly. As an alternative calcium is used as an alloying element to improve the mechanical property of Al6063/Sic alloy. In this paper Al6063 is chosen as the matrix material while Sic is used as a reinforcement where calcium powder is added to modify the silicon phase of the composite. Finally, concentration of Silicon carbide is varied from 0 to 150 mg to produce four specimens of Al6063 alloy and it is subjected to microstructure analysis which showed the reduction of grain size and therefore improvement in the hardness from 52.9 HV to 58.4 HV and decrease in the wear loss from 3.97 to 3.27 percentage.


In this research, an effort is made to familiarize and best potentials of the reinforcing agent in aluminum 7075 matrices with naturally occurring Beryl (Be) and Graphene (Gr) to develop a new hybrid composite material. A stir casting technique was adopted to synthesize the hybrid nanocomposites. GNPS were added in volume fractions of 0.5wt%, 1wt%, 1.5wt%, and 2wt% and with a fixed volume fraction of 6 wt.% of Beryl. As cast hybrid composites were microstructurally characterized with scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Microstructure study through scanning electron microscope demonstrated that the homogeneous distribution reinforcement Beryl and GNPs into the Al7075 matrix. Brinell hardness and tensile strength of synthesized materials were investigated. The hybrid Al7075-Beryl-GNPs composites showed better mechanical properties compared with base Al7075 matrix material. The ascast Al7075-6wt.% Beryl-2wt.%GNPs showed 49.41% improvement in hardness and 77.09% enhancement in ultimate tensile strength over Al7075 alloy.

The goal of this research is to improve the mechanical properties such as strength, hardness and wear resistance for automotive application such as brake shoe and bearings due to high cycle, load and impact during their usage. Therefore, another alloying element or reinforcement addition is necessary. In this work, the composites are made by ADC 12 (Al-Si aluminum alloy) as the matrix and reinforced with micro SiC through stir casting process and TiB is added various from (0.04, 0.06, 0.15, 0.3 and 0.5) wt.% that act as grain refiners and 5 wt.% of Mg is added to improve the wettability of the composites. The addition of TiB improves the mechanical properties because the grain becomes finer and uniform, and the addition of Mg makes the matrix and reinforce have better adhesion. The results obtained that the optimum composition was found by adding 0.15 wt.% of TiB with tensile strength improve from 98 MPa to 136.3 MPa, hardness from 35 to 53 HRB and wear rate reduced from 0.006 2 mm3 s−1 to 0.002 3 mm3 s−1 respectively.

The mechanical properties and the fracture mechanism of composites consisting of ZA-27 alloy reinforced with titanium dioxide particles were investigated with the primary objective of understanding the influence of the particulate reinforcement on the mechanical behaviour of the ZA-27 alloy. The titanium dioxide particle content in the composites ranged from 0 to 6 per cent, in steps of 2 wt %. The composites were fabricated by the stir casting technique in which the reinforcement particles were dispersed in the vortex created in the molten matrix alloy. The study revealed improvements in Young's modulus, ultimate tensile strength (UTS), compressive strength, yield strength and hardness of the composites as the titanium dioxide content was increased, but at the expense of ductility and impact strength. The fracture behaviour of the composite was also significantly influenced by the presence of titanium dioxide particles. Eventual fracture was a result of crack propagation through the matrix as well as through the reinforcing particles. Scanning electron microscopy and fractography analyses were carried out to provide suitable explanations for the observed phenomena.

The aim of this work is to investigate the influence of the addition of silicon carbide and molybdenum disulfide on the microstructure and the tensile strength of the Al-Flyash hybrid composites prepared using the stir casting technique. The composite with aluminum 6061 alloy as the matrix and flyash as the reinforcement, with different weight fractions, is investigated to study its microstructure and the tensile strength. The same has been compared with the hybrid composites with Aluminum-Flyash/SiC and Aluminum-Flyash/MoS2 for different weight fractions of the reinforcements. The tensile tests were conducted as per ASTM standard testing procedures at room temperature. From the results it is identified that tensile strength of the Al6061-Flyash composite is lesser than the Al6061-Flyash/SiC and Al6061-Flyash/MoS2 hybrid composites. It is also observed that increment in the composition of the SiC and MoS2 causes the increment in the tensile strength of the hybrid composite. This increment in the tensile strength is due to good interface bonding and uniform distribution of the reinforcements in the composite.

Composite materials are defined as material systems consisting of mixture of or combination of two or more micro constituents insoluble in each other and differing in form and or material composition. In this study Metal Matrix Composite (MMCs) has been produced using stir casting method for performing the mechanical properties. Most of the engineering industries want light and better mechanical properties of components; this can be achieved by MMCs of Aluminium because of its excellent performance. In this research work we fabricate the Aluminium by liquid route. Here Al 7075 is used as a base metal and Multi Walled Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNT) used as sub metal with various percentages. Experiments were conducted to analyze microstructure, hardness & tensile strength. By using optical microscope and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) we analyze the sample specimens are well dispersion in MWCNT with AA 7075. Hardness and tensile strength increases with increasing of wt. %. Hardness of material increases with increase in percentages of MWCNT, whereas tensile strength of the material increases with increase in percentages of MWCNT and Elongation reduces

In this study, SiC and TiO2 nanoparticles reinforced AA 6082 composites were prepared by stir casting technique. The optimized quantities of reinforcement particles used in composites was 6 Wt.%. The mechanical properties such as tensile strength, compressive strength and hardness of prepared composites were improved significantly about with novel multi-encapsulate feeding as compared normal feeding technique. Also, the drastic improvement was noted with microstructure in order to form of health clusters and homogeneous distribution under novel feeding than normal feeding. The testing shows that the micro hardness and tensile strength was improved about 10% and 5% than normal feed process. Lesser blow holes and good matrix materials dispersion was found in multi encapsulate feeding process. From this experimentation, it was confirmed that multiple encapsulate feeding of reinforcement particles can increase the mechanical strength and microstructure properties than normal feed technique.

Composite materials are widely used in variety of applications such as aerospace, automotive and structural components resulting in savings of material and energy. Particulate reinforced Aluminium metal matrix composite materials which are having desirable properties such as high specific stiffness, high specific strength, high coefficient of thermal expansion, increased fatigue resistance and superior dimensional stability compared to unreinforced alloys. In the present work an attempt has been made to develop composites using Al 6061 as a matrix material reinforced with Zircon particulates using stir casting technique. The Zircon particulates were varied in steps of 0 %, 3%, 6%, 9% and 12%. The Specimens were prepared as per the ASTM standards. The prepared composites were characterized by microstructural studies using optical microscope and tensile strength and hardness properties were evaluated. Zircon particles were observed to refine the grains and were distributed homogeneously in the aluminium matrix at 9% of Zircon. The tensile and hardness properties were higher in case of composites when compared to unreinforced Al 6061 matrix. Also increasing addition level of Zircon has resulted in further increase in both tensile strength and hardness values and optimum value was obtained at 9% of Zircon.
