In this study, natural convection of heat transfer in various channel geometries with a constant surface area under laminar flow condition has been investigated numerically. Various hot surface temperatures (Th = 35-95°C) have been applied on the surfaces of the channels to investigate four different geometries of annular channels (Circular (C), Square (S), Elliptic (E) and Airfoil (F)) on the heat transfer rate. Once the optimum geometry was exhibited, the effect of three nanofluids (Al2O3/water, CuO/water and SiO2/water) is investigated in the analysis and compared to pure water to enhance the convective heat transfer of the base fluid. Moreover, with these nanofluids, analysis has been performed for three different volume concentrations of nanoparticles of Ø = 2%, 4% and 6% along with 0% (pure water). Porous foams (ε = 0.9 to 0.99) were used in addition to nanofluids to see if heat transfer could be improved. Results indicate that the heat transfer rate was greatly increased when the airfoil geometry was used, with a maximum and minimum increase in heat transfer coefficient of 60% and 46%, respectively. Also, higher nanoparticle of Al2O3 dispersion to the base fluid enhances the heat transfer rate by 15% compared to other nanofluids.

In this experimental study, Aluminums Oxide (Al2O3) in Pure Water (PW) as nanofluid was used for heat transfer enhancement in car radiator together with electric field. Electric field with different voltage 8, 11, 14 kV and nanofluids with volume concentrations of 0.08%, 0.5% and 1% were investigated. From the experiments, it was found that the unit with electric field pronounced better heat transfer rate, especially at low fan speed. In addition heat transfer coefficient and heat transfer rate in engine cooling system increased with the usage of nanofluids Al2O3/PW compared to Pure Water alone. With the use of nanofluid with concentration of 1% and electric field for fan speed 600 and 1200 rpm, thermal performance factors were in a range between, 1.8–3.2 and 1.6–1.74, respectively. Thermal performance factor is more than 1 in all of cases, and it can be concluded that this technique can be used in car radiators to improve heat transfer.

The impact of overall heat transfer coefficient and the pressure drop on performance of a counter flow helical tube heat exchanger with Cu-Ni-water hybrid nanofluid are computed. To evaluate heat transfer rate for a mix of base fluid with copper and nickel nanoparticles of volume concentrations 0.02,0.04 and 0.06 are added. To control the sedimentation of nanoparticles in the base fluid Ultrasonication followed by magnetic stirrer method is used. In this work experiments are conducted with to enhance heat transfer rate rather than stability of nanoparticles. Experiments are conducted for different concentrations and coil turns under laminar flow regime. The results are shown that 0.04 % vol of Cu-Ni/H2O with 12 turns is more predominate foe food processing applications due to its consistency in maintaining a constant temperature.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to study the flow and heat transfer characteristics of microchannel heatsinks with ribs, cavities and secondary channels. The influence of length and width of the ribs on heat transfer enhancement, secondary flows, flow distribution and temperature distribution are examined at different Reynolds numbers. The effectiveness of each heatsink is evaluated using the performance factor. Design/methodology/approach A three-dimensional solid-fluid conjugate heat transfer numerical model is used to study the flow and heat transfer characteristics in microchannels. One symmetrical channel is adopted for the simulation to reduce the computational cost and time. Flow inside the channels is assumed to be single-phase and laminar. The governing equations are solved using finite volume method. Findings The numerical results are analyzed in terms of average Nusselt number ratio, average base temperature, friction factor ratio, pressure variation inside the channel, temperature distribution, velocity distribution inside the channel, mass flow rate distribution inside the secondary channels and performance factor of each microchannels. Results indicate that impact of rib width is higher in enhancing the heat transfer when compared with its length but with a penalty on the pressure drop. The combined effects of secondary channels, ribs and cavities helps to lower the temperature of the microchannel heat sink and enhances the heat transfer rate. Practical implications The fabrication of microchannels are complex, but recent advancements in the additive manufacturing techniques makes the fabrication of the design considered in this numerical study feasible. Originality/value The proposed microchannel heatsink can be used in practical applications to reduce the thermal resistance, and it augments the heat transfer rate when compared with the baseline design.

The research objective is to assemble a convection test system which acts as a heat exchanger (HE) and test its applicability using ethylene glycol. A Double Pipe (DP)-type HE consists of an inner pipe surrounded by an outer pipe (annulus) whereas a Coil-type HE composed of a coil surrounded by an outer pipe. Water flows through the outer pipe in both types of HE, while ethylene glycol flows through the inner piper or coil. HE in combination with other components (such as) forms a convection test system. The applicability of the system was tested to determine the heat transfer coefficient of ethylene glycol in a DP-type and Coil-type HEs. After that, the heat transfer rate was calculated and compared. The results show that the heat transfer coefficient in the DP-type HE is the lowest at 12.2 W/m2 oC and the highest at 26.8 W/m2 oC; and the corresponding heat transfer rate is the lowest at 8.3 W and the highest is 56.3 W. In comparison, for Coil-type HE, the lowest heat transfer coefficient is 38.9 W/m2 oC and the highest is 66.2 W/m2 oC which correspond to the heat transfer rate 19.9 W at the lowest and 225 W at the highest.

Abstract This paper presented design guideline of the microfin array heat sink using flow-induced vibration to increase the heat transfer rate in the laminar flow regime. Effect of the flow-induced vibration of a microfin array on heat transfer enhancement was investigated experimentally by comparing the thermal resistances of the microfin array heat sink and those of a plain-wall heat sink. At the air velocities of 4.4m/s and 5.5 m/s, an increase of 5.5% and 11.5% in the heat transfer rate was obtained, respectively. The microfin flow sensor also characterized the flow-induced vibration of the microfin. It was determined that the microfin vibrates with the fundamental natural frequency regardless of the air velocity. It was also shown that the vibrating displacement of the microfin is increased with increasing air velocity and then saturated over a certain value of air velocity. Based on the numerical analysis of the temperature distribution resulted from microfin vibration and experimental results, a simple heat transfer model (heat pumping model) was proposed to understand the heat transfer mechanism of a microfin array heat sink. Under the geometric and structural constraints, the maximum heat transfer enhancement was obtained at the intersection of the minimum thickness of the microfin and constraint of the bending angle.

This paper presents a numerical investigation of heat transfer augmentation using internal longitudinal ribs and ?-Al2O3/ water nanofluid in a stationary curved square duct. The flow is assumed 3D, steady, laminar, and incompressible with constant properties. Computations have been done by solving Navier-Stokes and energy equations utilizing finite volume method. Water has been selected as the base fluid and thermo- physical properties of ?- Al2o3/ water nanofluid have been calculated using available correlations in the literature. The effects of Dean number, rib size and particle volume fraction on the heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop have been examined. Results show that nanoparticles can increase the heat transfer coefficient considerably. For any fixed Dean number, relative heat transfer rate (The ratio of the heat transfer coefficient in case the of ?- Al2o3/ water nanofluid to the base fluid) increases as the particle volume fraction increases; however, the addition of nanoparticle to the base fluid is more useful for low Dean numbers. In the case of water flow, results indicate that the ratio of heat transfer rate of ribbed duct to smooth duct is nearly independent of Dean number. Noticeable heat transfer enhancement, compared to water flow in smooth duct, can be achieved when ?-Al2O3/ water nanofluid is used as the working fluid in ribbed duct.

This paper presents the heat transfer and fluid dynamics analysis of a horizontal channel formed by parallel plates with periodic insertions of heated blocks, having curved deflectors to direct the flow. The heat transfer coefficient investigated is compared with that of the horizontal channel without deflectors. The aim of the deflectors is to lead the fluid to the space between the heated blocks increasing the dynamics in this area. This zone will normally, without deflectors, become a stagnant fluid zone in which low energy transfer rate occurs. The results show that the heat transfer coefficient is larger as compared to that of the case without deflectors. The increment in the heat transfer coefficient is due primarily to the fluid motion stirred in the area between the heated block due to the deflectors. However, it must be pointed out. This implementation also increases the pressure drop in the channel.

Multi-tube multi-fin heat exchangers are extensively used in various industries. In the current work, detailed experimental investigations were carried out to establish the flow/heat transfer characteristics in three distinct heat exchanger geometries. A novel perforated plain fin design was developed, and its performance was evaluated against standard plain and louvred fins designs. Experimental setups were designed, and the tests were carefully carried out which enabled quantification of the heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics. In the experiments the average velocity of air was varied in the range of 0.7 m/s to 4 m/s corresponding to Reynolds numbers of 600 to 2650. The water side flow rates in the tubes were kept at 0.12, 0.18, 0.24, 0.3, and 0.36 m3/h corresponding to Reynolds numbers between 6000 and 30,000. It was found that the louvred fins produced the highest heat transfer rate due to the availability of higher surface area, but it also produced the highest pressure drops. Conversely, while the new perforated design produced a slightly higher pressure drop than the plain fin design, it gave a higher value of heat transfer rate than the plain fin especially at the lower liquid flow rates. Specifically, the louvred fin gave consistently high pressure drops, up to 3 to 4 times more than the plain and perforated models at 4 m/s air flow, however, the heat transfer enhancement was only about 11% and 13% over the perforated and plain fin models, respectively. The mean heat transfer rate and pressure drops were used to calculate the Colburn and Fanning friction factors. Two novel semiempirical relationships were derived for the heat exchanger’s Fanning and Colburn factors as functions of the non-dimensional fin surface area and the Reynolds number. It was demonstrated that the Colburn and Fanning factors were predicted by the new correlations to within ±15% of the experiments.


Heat Transfer enhancement needs buoyancy force. This is to be achieved by making perforations on fin surfaces. The present paper is a study on the enhancement of heat transfer in terms of density, velocity and temperature with three different perforation geometry (parallel square, inclined square and circular). CFD was used to carry out the study of density variation, velocity and temperature drop among different perforated fins. This type of perforated fin has an improvement in heat transfer rate over its dimensionally equivalent solid fin.

The two important considerations in the design of a heat exchanger are — the total heat transfer rate and the allowable pressure drop. The allowable pressure drop defines the maximum flow rate through a single microchannel and economics drives the design towards this flow rate. Typically the flow rate in the microchannel is in laminar flow regime (Re < 2000) due to smaller hydraulic diameter. The laminar flow heat transfer in a smooth microchannel is limited by the boundary layer thickness. Commonly the heat transfer rate is enhanced by passively disrupting the laminar boundary layer using protrusions or depressions in the channel walls. More often these methods are best applicable at small range of Reynolds number where the heat transfer rate enhancement is more than the pressure drop increase and break down as the flow rate is changed outside the range. The benefit of a flow disruption method can be reaped only if it provides higher heat transfer enhancement than the increase in the pressure drop at the working flow rates in the microchannel. A heat transfer efficient microchannel design has been developed using wall features that create stable disrupted flow and break the laminar boundary layer in a microchannel over a wide range of flow rates. The paper experimentally investigates the developed design for the heat transfer enhancement and pressure drop increase compared to a smooth wall microchannel. A simple microchannel device was designed and fabricated with and without wall features. The experiments with single gas phase fluid showed promising results with the developed wall feature design as the heat transfer rate increase was 20% to 80% more than the pressure drop increase in the laminar regime. The wall feature design was an important variable to affect the magnitude of performance enhancement in different flow regime. A general criterion was developed to judge the efficacy of wall feature design that can be used during a microchannel heat exchanger design.
