Based on indoor thermal environment test and questionnaire surveys, the paper studies on thermal insulation capacity and indoor thermal environment of the vernacular dwellings in Wei-he Plain of Shaanxi Province, China, and analyses their heating methods and application status. Besides, the popularity of sustainable techniques in local area has been evaluated and summarized. Moreover, the paper discusses the present problems in local indoor thermal environment and energy-saving status.

Air-conditioning system plays a significant role in providing users a thermally comfortable indoor environment, which is a necessity in modern buildings. In order to save the vast energy consumed by air-conditioning system, the building envelopes in envelope-load dominated buildings should be well designed such that the unwanted heat gain and loss with environment can be minimized. In this paper, a new design of concrete wall panel that enhances thermal insulation of buildings by adding a gypsum layer inside concrete is presented. Experiments have been conducted for monitoring the temperature variation in both proposed sandwich wall panel and conventional concrete wall panel under a heat radiation source. For further understanding the thermal effect of such sandwich wall panel design from building scale, two three-story building models adopting different wall panel designs are constructed for evaluating the temperature distribution of entire buildings using finite element method. Both the experimental and simulation results have shown that the gypsum layer improves the thermal insulation performance by retarding the heat transfer across the building envelopes.

In order to improve the comfort of the living environment, the thermal performance and temperature–humidity regulation of the exterior walls of two timber-framed structure buildings is theoretically calculated and experimentally studied in this study. Both of the two buildings are located in Nanjing, China, the hot-summer and cold-winter zone. Then WUFI is used to simulate and predict the changes of temperature, relative humidity, and water content of the two timber-framed structure buildings, to strengthen the theoretical analysis of the thermal and humidity coupling of the external walls, and to propose an optimal design scheme for the insulation and temperature and humidity regulation of the external walls. The main results show that the tested thermal conductivity is basically consistent with the predicted value, which prove that WUFI simulation can effectively predict the thermal insulation performance of the external wall. The two timber-framed structure buildings are both suitable for the cold areas, and the reasonable optimization of the design of the structure is the key to the insulation of the building wall. Timber-framed structure is proved to have good temperature–humidity regulation effect. The moisture content of the two timber-framed structure buildings is stable, and the annual temperature and winter humidity are within the appropriate humidity range, which indicates that the wall design is suitable for Nanjing hot-summer and cold-winter climate zone. Four types of wall structure indoor mold spore germinations are less likely, which is not easy to produce the mold. The above research aims to optimize the design of the energy-saving wall of the timber-framed structure and create a comfortable and healthy living environment.

There are no known studies to quantify the effects of amenity space landscape structures located over habitable space as related to thermal performance. There are three main objectives for investigation in this MRP; Objective 1 – Thermal analysis of on-slab wall types, Objective 2 (O2) – Thermal analysis of example amenity space using results from O1, and Objective 3 (O3) – Recommended details that ‘work’ thermally and functionally. A quantitative methodology was utilized using 1D manual calculation (Glaser method) and 2D computer simulation (THERM) to study three CIP concrete wall conditions and variations which include; 1.0) base line condition, 2.0) modified condition, and 3.0) ultimate condition. Simulation results of O1 indicated that design of landscape walls could improve thermal performance by 55%, O2 found that there was an improvement of 60.5% between the worst and best performing conditions, and O3 recommended two wall variations to be utilized in landscape design which perform thermally and functionally. Materials with a low coefficient of surface radiation intensively reflect the radiant component of the heat flux and reduce heat losses through the building envelope. When designing building structures with reflective thermal insulation it is necessary to evaluate the efficiency of its application. However, at present there are no methods for calculating the value of thermal losses through external walls in the presence of reflective thermal insulation on internal surface of the wall, as well as there are no data on the values of heat transfer coefficients at the inner surface of building envelope with reflective thermal insulation. In this regard, in the climatic chambers of NIISF RAABS, complex thermal engineering studies were carried out. For this a cellular concrete wall 2,8 x1,2 m was put up into the chamber with reflective thermal insulation on the inner surface and without it. The obtained results of experimental studies, presented in the work, allowed obtaining numerical values of heat transfer coefficients at the inner surface of walls with reflective thermal insulation, and use the obtained data in further calculations.
