AbstractUniversity as a social enterprise has become the dominant response to the challenge of bringing up an engineer as a first-rate technical expert who acts as a social agent, rather than just a technician, with a “broad understanding of the social and philosophical context in which he will work” [3]. Aim of the research is to analyze student engineers' Enterprise 3.0 application in engineering curriculum. The meaning of the key concepts of university as a social enterprise, engineering curriculum and Enterprise 3.0 is studied. Explorative research has been used. The empirical study was conducted at Riga Technical University, Riga, Latvia, in 2011. Descriptive statistics was implemented for primary data analysis. The findings of the research allow drawing the conclusions on the favourable context of Enterprise 3.0 application in engineering curriculum as the student engineers' knowledge and attitude towards Enterprise 3.0 application are positive. Direction of further research are proposed.

There is a culture of disengagement from social consideration in engineering disciplines. This means that first year engineering students, who arrive planning to change the world through engineering, lose this passion as they progress through the engineering curriculum. The community driven technology innovation and investment program described in this paper is an attempt to reverse this trend by fusing community engagement with the normal engineering design process. This approach differs from existing project or trip based approaches – outreach – because the focus is on local communities with which the university team forms a long-term partnership through weekly in-person meetings and community driven problem statements – engagement.

Background: The incidence of alcohol and substance misuse continues to be a problem in the workplace. Methods: A partnership between two universities and a federal agency implemented SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment) into a three-credit, 7-week online Community and Environmental Health Course for licensed nurses earning their Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. SBIRT is an early intervention, targeting nondependent substance users before needing specialized treatment. Findings: Over seven semesters, 119 students completed the SBIRT curriculum. We observed a significant increase in knowledge about standard drink sizes and recognizing the most reliable alcohol use questionnaire (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test [AUDIT]). Students perceived themselves as competent in assessing patient readiness to change, making the best treatment decisions, and referring patients for appropriate care. Most students found significant value of SBIRT in their current practice setting. Conclusion/Application to Practice: The SBIRT curriculum was found to be a valuable tool for nurses in screening and referring patients to care who are at risk of alcohol and drug misuse. It is important for occupational health nurses to learn the necessary skills for assessing workers for alcohol and drug misuse. The occupational health nurse is encouraged to practice their skills at every patient encounter for purposes of refining their skills. Employers are concerned about drug and alcohol misuse in the workplace and occupational health nurses are the optimal group to intervene with workers who need assistance.

This qualitative study examined multimodal cohesive devices in English oral biology texts by eight high-achieving Saudi English-as-a-foreign-language students enrolled in a Bachelor of Science Dentistry program. A Systemic Functional Multimodal Discourse Analysis (SF-MDA) of the textual and logical cohesive devices in oral biology texts was conducted, employing Halliday and Hasan’s cohesion analysis scheme. The findings showed that students used varied cohesive devices: lexical cohesion, followed by reference and conjunctions. Although ellipsis was minimally employed in the oral biology texts, its discipline-specific uses emerged: the use of bullet points and numbered lists that facilitate recall. The SF-MDA of cohesion in multimodal semiotic resources highlighted the processes underlying construction of conceptual and linguistic knowledge of cohesive devices in oral biology texts. The results indicate that oral biology discourse is interdisciplinary, including a number of subfields in biology. The SF-MDA of pictorial oral biology representations indicates that they include instances of cohesive devices that illustrate and complement verbal texts. The results indicate that undergraduate students need to be provided with a variety of multimodal high-cohesion texts so that they can successfully extend underlying conceptual and logical meaning-making relations.
