In this study, factors affecting the college choice of international students (CCIS) are investigated based on the opinions of international students at a state university (Anadolu University) in Turkey. A case study design is employed and opinions of students are analyzed in accordance with whether they are scholarship or non-scholarship students. In the findings, three main themes emerge; intent to study abroad, choosing to study in Turkey, and choosing to study at Anadolu University. These themes cover several factors affecting the CCIS. In this regard, there are no critical differences between the factors affecting the opinions of scholarship and non-scholarship students. However, some factors could differentiate in accordance with the background characteristics of the students and whether they are from high-income or non-high-income countries.

Numerous institutions list hosting and recruiting international students as an important aspect of their internationalization mission. Reasons include the financial benefit to the institution and the local economy; job creation; recruitment of high-quality graduate assistants; increased diversity in the classroom and on campus; and creating international partnerships. However, new changes to immigration laws in the USA have had a negative impact on international college student enrollment. The purpose of this case study is to integrate the Hossler and Gallagher (1987) three-phase model of college student choice with the push and pull factors relating to how international students choose US colleges, to arrive at a descriptive understanding of how international students make their college choice decision.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the needs and aspirations of international students studying at a comprehensive university campus in the USA in comparison to domestic students represented by factors that drive students’ college choice. Design/methodology/approach The study opted for a survey design through questionnaire and employed descriptive and inferential statistics to assess differences between international and domestic students. Findings Findings suggest that international students are different from domestic students on seven choice factors: on-campus housing, recommendation from family, academic reputation, reputation of faculty, participation in intercollegiate sports, printed material or video and need-based financial aid. Research limitations/implications The study was conducted at a four-year comprehensive public university campus in California. Findings and conclusions may be relevant only to such context. Practical implications International and domestic students have different preferences and their college choices are affected to different degrees by the varying choice factors. Education administrators and policy makers can have targeted strategic marketing plans that are responsive to the different types populations’ needs. Originality/value This is the first study that compares international students’ to domestic students’ needs and aspirations when choosing a university campus.
