In most urban areas, buses are the most heavily used form of public transportation[1] and more so in Indian cities where buses make up for over 90% of public transport ridership[2]. In the selected Indian metro cities, where formal bus based PT systems are operated by public agencies, they are over-reliant on state support to sustain operations as fare box collections are inadequate in spite of having relatively high ridership. The main challenge for all this is to achieve long term financial sustainability of public transport systems while providing good quality and affordable bus services.This paper investigates internal and external factors that led to the steep and recurrent fare increases in the Bangalore city bus services in the period from 2012–2014 which are operated by Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation. In order to estimate the impact of the recent bus fare increases that have had on the economically weaker sections of the society dependent on these services, the paper presents the results of a random sampling survey study carried out in a central locality in the city that has a large slum area.The key findings throw light on the various ways in which the low income bus users have adapted to reduce their travel costs through changes in travel behavior, travel pattern and modal shifts. The cost of the behavioral changes through lost opportunities and the cost of the modal shifts of the persons earlier favoring public transportation draw attention to the significance of public transport fare policies. Furthermore, the management and operations of the BMTC agency show scope for improvement which can translate into better revenue generation and consequent reduction in fares.

The urban public transportation is an important network system that many urban residences have come to rely on for accessibility and linkage to key urban areas. Although in many urban centers, private transport services is also a preferred mode of transport for many people, however, the significance of public transport remains a perceived need of the city from the standpoint of efficient and timely link between urban areas, control of traffic congestion, and impact on the urban air quality. For the public to maintain their patronage in public transport, reasonable public satisfaction with the services offered is indispensable. Kota Kinabalu city bus is a government-operated bus company started in 2009, but is gradually loosing public interest with low patronage, resulting in increase in personal vehicle traffic. This study aims to understand the reasons for low user patronage of city bus service by investigating the efficiency and quality of service provided. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected using questionnaire survey and open ended interview. Data is analyzed using inferential statistics analysis and factor analysis. Findings reveals that majority of the users are female of Malaysia nationality in age group 18-24 years and predominantly from low-income group. Overall users rated satisfaction is low because poor services in key area such as Disabled-friend Facility, Bus Network Coverage, Overcrowding and Vehicle Cleanliness. Comfort and Safety were also a major area of concern. It was evident from the study that the users are willing to pay more for improved quality City but. It can thus be inferred that the users of public bus service are not necessarily looking for cheap services but will appreciate improved services at the reasonable price

Public transport coverage fails to keep pace with urbanization and urban expansion, which makes the “last kilometer" problem of residents’ travel increasingly prominent”. However, the practice has proved that microcirculation public transportation plays an important role in expanding the coverage of public transportation and promoting the integration of public transportation. Therefore, this paper takes a city bus community as an example. Firstly, it analyses the bus travel demand of commuters connecting to the subway station during the early workday rush hours on basis of IC Big Data, obtains candidate stations of microcirculation bus lines through K-means clustering. Secondly, it establishes the model, the target of which is to minimize  the cost residents' travel and bus operation, under the limited condition of walking distance, passenger number, station spacing and departure frequency. Finally, the genetic algorithm is used to find the optimal solution of the model, so it’s no doubt that the most feasible circular bus route is obtained. The results have positive significance for promoting the construction and operation of public transport integration and promoting the convenience and efficiency of public transport travel. 


The urban population in 2014 accounted for 54% of the total global population, up from 34% in 1960, and continues to grow. The global urban population is expected to grow approximately 1.84%, 1.63% and 1.44% between 2015 and 2020, 2020 and 2025, and 2025 and 2030 respectively. This growing population puts pressure on government not only to accommodate the current and potential citizens but also provide them facilities and services for a better living standard. Providing a sustainable growing environment for the citizens is the biggest challenge for the government. As the populations increase, complexity network of transportation, water and sanitation, emergency services, etc. will increase many folds. SMART CITY Mission is being implemented to resolve this issue. As the cities turn smart, so should the transportation facilities. India on June 2018 had only 20 cities with populations of over 500,000 have organized public transport systems, pointing to the large gap to be bridged in their journey to turn smart. The aim of this paper is to examine the impact of smart card data from public transport for improving the predictions and planning of public transport usage and congestions. The mobile apps like M-Indicator, Google Maps don’t interlink, do not have a real time tracking of vehicles, fare distribution, congestion-based route mapping for public transportation. These factors are addressed in the paper with its advantages and disadvantages. This paper also talks about how information from smart card is to be extracted, how Big Data is to be managed and finally come to a smart, sustainable Urban Transit System. This paper also brings into light the data security issues and measures to curb those issues. This paper proposes and emphasizes on a single smart card for all modes of public transport

The study assessed the relationship between fee and liability waivers introduced at Rattray Park vis-a-vis its patronage by low income earners within the Kumasi Metropolis. Barriers to park use as well as safety awareness were also analysed. The research design adopted as a guide was the survey study method. In all, 141 revellers were contacted through questionnaire administration within a 3-day period during the programme. Indepth Interview (IDI) schedules were also conducted with key stakeholders who were incharge of organising the waiver programmes. Quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS while qualitative data were manually transcribed. The study revealed that low income earners took advantage of the waiver programmes (attested by 44% of respondents) with p-value of 0.034 to make use of the park. Similarly, about 70% of respondents consideredinability to afford the cost of entry tickets a factor which hindered their recreational use of the park. The fee waiver concept was noted in the study as well-intended and a strategic recommendation suggested by park-goers signaled the need for boosting recreational activities in the park to engage visitors all day long for a richer experience. The dynamic development of urban areas has created the need to adapt computer systems used to increased passenger traffic. Increasingly common phenomenon of congestion, contributed to intensify efforts to improve the efficiency of the control flows in agglomerations. For this purpose cities begin to use more and more modern-solving software to improve the functioning of public transport. The aim of the article is to assess and review of current solutions that can be successfully implemented in communication systems, cities in Poland. The publication is also intended to determine the prospects for the development of intelligent transport systems in the future as well as the effects resulting from their continued use.

This research was conducted to investigate the relationship between public transport and the occupation of shanty settlements in Kampala. It is hoped that results from the study will inform future policy formulation by the government and planning of transport infrastructure and low-income housing developments. The study thus sought to examine whether a relationship exists between the cost of available public transportation and the choice to reside in these shanty settlements in Kampala. The study established that increased availability of low-cost public transport allows city residents to seek out better quality and cheaper housing further from the city centre (their affordability index being maintained or reduced). Influential government policy decisions such as maximum caps on fares and subsidisation of public transport vehicles can ensure increased supply and therefore lower the cost of public transport.  Increased mobility can result in lower demand for cheap inner-city housing that may in turn stem the growth of illegal settlements, resulting in healthier city development for all.

Traffic has a direct impact on local and regional economies, on pollution levels and is also a major source of discomfort and frustration for the public who have to deal with congestion, accidents or detours due to road works or accidents. Congestion in urban areas is a common phenomenon nowadays, as the main arteries of cities become congested during peak hours or when there are additional constraints such as traffic accidents and road works that slow down traffic on road sections. When traffic increases, it is observed that some roads are predisposed to congestion, while others are not. It is evident that both congestion and urban traffic itself are influenced by several factors represented by complex geospatial data and the spatial relationships between them. In this paper were integrated mathematical models, real time traffic data with network analysis and simulation procedures in order to analyze the public transportation in Oradea and the impact on urban traffic. A mathematical model was also adapted to simulate the travel choices of the population of the city and of the surrounding villages. Based on the network analysis, traffic analysis and on the traveling simulation, the elements generating traffic congestion in the inner city can be easily determined. The results of the case study are emphasizing that diminishing the traffic and its effects can be obtained by improving either the public transport density or its accessibility.

Abstract. Introduction: Foods dense in micronutrients are generally more expensive than those with higher energy content. These cost-differentials may put low-income families at risk of diminished micronutrient intake. Objectives: We sought to determine differences in the cost for iron, folate, and choline in foods available for purchase in a low-income community when assessed for energy content and serving size. Methods: Sixty-nine foods listed in the menu plans provided by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for low-income families were considered, in 10 domains. The cost and micronutrient content for-energy and per-serving of these foods were determined for the three micronutrients. Exact Kruskal-Wallis tests were used for comparisons of energy costs; Spearman rho tests for comparisons of micronutrient content. Ninety families were interviewed in a pediatric clinic to assess the impact of food cost on food selection. Results: Significant differences between domains were shown for energy density with both cost-for-energy (p < 0.001) and cost-per-serving (p < 0.05) comparisons. All three micronutrient contents were significantly correlated with cost-for-energy (p < 0.01). Both iron and choline contents were significantly correlated with cost-per-serving (p < 0.05). Of the 90 families, 38 (42 %) worried about food costs; 40 (44 %) had chosen foods of high caloric density in response to that fear, and 29 of 40 families experiencing both worry and making such food selection. Conclusion: Adjustments to USDA meal plans using cost-for-energy analysis showed differentials for both energy and micronutrients. These differentials were reduced using cost-per-serving analysis, but were not eliminated. A substantial proportion of low-income families are vulnerable to micronutrient deficiencies.

This comparative study analyzes the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on motorized mobility in eight large cities of five Latin American countries. Public institutions and private organizations have made public data available for a better understanding of the contagion process of the pandemic, its impact, and the effectiveness of the implemented health control measures. In this research, data from the IDB Invest Dashboard were used for traffic congestion as well as data from the Moovit© public transport platform. For the daily cases of COVID-19 contagion, those published by Johns Hopkins Hospital University were used. The analysis period corresponds from 9 March to 30 September 2020, approximately seven months. For each city, a descriptive statistical analysis of the loss and subsequent recovery of motorized mobility was carried out, evaluated in terms of traffic congestion and urban transport through the corresponding regression models. The recovery of traffic congestion occurs earlier and faster than that of urban transport since the latter depends on the control measures imposed in each city. Public transportation does not appear to have been a determining factor in the spread of the pandemic in Latin American cities.
