Using formalism as the core discipline, the researcher aims to develop and explain the concepts of time and memory presented by the author. In addition, a critique of the writing style and syntax in relation to the themes of the story will be tackled as well.

This study aims to analyze the short story, The Spell and the Ever Changing Moon (2014) by Rukhsana Ahmad, from the feminist perspective. A close reading of the text reveals that facing everyday challenges and juggling between multiple roles is a common practice for middleclass house wives in Pakistani society. The economic instabilities added with emotional, psychological as well as physical abuse plays a vital role in their oppression and humiliation on regular basis. These roles as assigned to them define their social standing and suffering becomes their destiny. Multiple roles of such women and social expectations outside and inside the house define their way of living. Each and every movement and thought becomes codependent on their social familial roles. Being selfless becomes an obligation and ‘sacrifice’ becomes convention for middle class women who spend their whole lives living under the thumb of their men folk. Moreover, the movement and status of women inside and outside the home is also a major concern addressed in this paper including the concept of home, and its significance in lives of Pakistani women.

The aim of this paper is to investigate the issue of intertextuality in the novel Alfirdaws Alyabab (The Waste Paradise) by the female Saudi novelist and short story writer Laila al-Juhani. Intertextuality is a rhetoric and literary technique defined as a textual reference deliberate or subtle to some other texts with a view of drawing more significance to the core text; and hence it is employed by an author to communicate and discuss ideas in a critical style. The narrative structure of Alfirdaws Alyabab (The Waste Paradise) showcases references of religious, literary, historical, and folkloric intertextuality. In analyzing these references, the study follows the intertextual approach. In her novel The Waste Paradise, Laila al-Juhani portrays the suffering of Saudi women who are less tormented by social marginalization than by an inner conflict between openness to Western culture and conformity to cultural heritage. Intertextuality relates to words, texts, or discourses among each other. Moreover, the intertextual relations are subject to reader’s response to the text. The relation of one text with other texts or contexts never reduces the prestige of writing. Therefore, this study, does not diminish the status of the writer or the text; rather, it is in itself a kind of literary creativity. Finally, this paper aims to introduce Saudi writers in general and the female writers in particular to the world literature.

This research discusses imagery, diction and figure of speech in a short story entitled “Jalan Gelap Langit Terang” written by Abdul Wachid. This short story is one of the author’s works in a short story anthology, Bacalah Cinta, published by BukuLaela in 2005. This research reveals some figure of speeches such as diction, imagery and elaboration employed by the author of the short story. This research applied both stylistic approach and descriptive qualitative method. Data collection was done by close reading observation and note taking. The result shows that the author takes the advantage of connotative, English and Indonesian diction in some sentences. The imagery employed by the author covers personification, hyperbole, metaphor, repetition, rhetoric, elypsis, and antithesis. Moreover, the author tends to show repetition and symblolism in his style.

This article presents a close reading of the Romani characters and their actions in five stories by Viennese Romani writer and activist Samuel Mago and in two stories by his brother, Hungarian award-winning journalist Károly Mágó, in their bilingual Romani and German collection glücksmacher - e baxt romani. Brief biographies and an outline of the history of Roma and antiziganism in Austria provide background to textual analysis that focuses on how characters in the stories engender baxt/“Glück,” which means both happiness and luck. This dual meaning has inspired philosophical, psychological, economic, and anthropological studies, but literary scholars have rarely examined the concept in texts by Roma. For the protagonists in the brothers’ stories, happiness and luck become based less on monetary fortunes than on other means to live and survive in dark times of persecution and discrimination. The characters’ decisions unveil perceptions of baxt that rely largely on acquiring food, preserving and passing down family heirlooms, receiving an education, and freeing oneself and one’s family from persecution.

This chapter argues against the Hegelian-Marxist narrative, in which Lenin’s reading of the Science of Logic in 1914 led him to refound Marxist dialectics. Through a close reading of Lenin’s Philosophical Notebooks it is shown that although he made withering remarks about Engels’s and Plekhanov’s dialectics, this did not lead Lenin to reject the core principles of dialectical materialism. Indeed, it is demonstrated that Lenin neither intended to nor accomplished a refoundation of Marxist dialectics in 1914. The notion of quantity-quality leaps Lenin adds to his works from the time onwards show him less as an innovator in Marxist philosophy and more as a keeper of the flame of dialectical materialist orthodoxy.

This article illustrates the theme of the poetic in Ben Okri’s stokus from his Tales of freedom. It does this principally through an exploration of this new literary mode and its use of serendipity. As a sudden insight, serendipity becomes, in this Nigerian writer’s hands, a poetic device equivalent to illumination or an epiphanic moment. The introduction is an attempt to show the interrelationship between poetry and thought, on the one hand, and poetic experience, creative consciousness and serendipity, on the other. This is followed by a brief digression to outline the paucity of critical reception of this prose anthology, followed by a focused discussion of the storytelling form, in general, and the stoku, in particular. This elliptical form to which Ben Okri gives the name stoku is, as he states in Tales of freedom, ‘an amalgam of short story and haiku’. A comparison between the conventions inherent in the ancient Japanese art of tanka or haiku (short poems), also known as waku and displaying the poet’s imaginative wit (derived from the Anglo-Saxon witan [to know]), and those of Okri’s newer art form, the stoku, follows. The core of the article focuses on a brief analysis of a select number of Okri’s 13 rhapsodies in prose, showing how each stoku serves to illustrate a poetically rendered moment of insight, a vision or a paradox. In Okri’s Tales of freedom, the mythic conjunction between short story and haiku reveals hitherto hidden aspects of life. Through this innovative medium, akin to flash fiction, the subconscious can illuminate unknown worlds. This is akin to experiencing serendipity, linked to interiority, to inner vision. The argument concludes by pointing to the serendipities captured obliquely yet poetically in the stokus selected for discussion.Die pleidooi vir die digterlike in Ben Okri se stokus uit Tales of freedom (2009). Hierdie artikel illustreer die tema van die poëtiese in Ben Okri se stokus uit sy Tales of freedom. Dit ondersoek hierdie nuwe literêre vorm en die gelukkige (maar onbedoelde) saamval van denke en poësie (serendipiteit) daarin. As ‘n skielike insig, word serendipiteit in die Nigeriese skrywer se hande ‘n digterlike kunsgreep vergelykbaar met illuminasie of epifanie. Die inleiding is ‘n poging om die onderlinge verwantskap aan te dui tussen poësie en denke, enersyds, en digterlike ervaring, kreatiewe bewussyn en serendipiteit, andersyds. Daarna volg ‘n kort uitweiding oor die gebrek aan kritiese reaksie op hierdie prosaversameling, gevolg deur ‘n gefokusde bespreking van die vertelling in die algemeen, en die stoku, in die besonder. Hierdie elliptiese vorm, wat Ben Okri die stoku noem, is, soos hy sê in Tales of freedom sê, ‘n ‘amalgaam van kortverhaal en haikoe’. This paper deals with the reconceptualization of martyrdom in Želimir Periš’ short story collection Martyrs (2013). A close reading demonstrates a link between these texts and some hagiographic features, such as celibacy, asceticism, and visions. Special attention is given to the aspect of exemplarity, which is emphasized as a result of diverse repetitions. Also, the implications of the cyclical structure of this collection are examined. In conclusion, the analysis of the role of the story and story-telling indicates choice to be the shared motivation of these texts and the essence of martyrdom as it appears here.

Cerpen “Perempuan dalam Perang” merupakan salah satu cerpen yang terdapat dalam Kumpulan Cerpen Afrika: Kenapa Tidak Kau Pahat Binatang Lain. Kumpulan cerpen terbit tahun 2005 dan diterjemahkan oleh Sapardi Djoko Damono. Cerpen ini menceritakan  masa keterpurukan Negara Afrika yang  menjadi sorotan para kolonialis untuk menjajahnya. Masyarakat Afrika diperlakukan sebagai golongan inferior di tanah mereka oleh pihak Barat, akibat  konflik yang terjadi berkenaan dengan sosiologis dan psikologis penderitaan wanita pribumi dalam kolonialisme. Salah satu penderitaan psikologis yang dialami oleh masyarakat pribumi, yaitu perubahan ideologi yang menuju kemerosotan moral. Banyak dari mereka yang berpindah tempat, berpindah pola pikir, dan berubah dalam tindakan.  Metode yang digunakan adalah close reading, dengan menggunakan pendekatan teori poskolonialisme yang akan dihubungkan dengan prespektif feminisme  karena dalam cerita ini terkandung isu gender yang cukup kental.  Yang terjadi dalam cerpen “Perempuan dalam Perang” adalah perubahan pola pikir seorang wanita yang berjuang melawan penjajah, berubah menjadi seorang yang berjuang untuk dirinya. Wanita itu berusaha memertahankan hidupnya dengan menjual harga dirinya. Isu gender juga melekat dalam cerpen ini. Dilihat dari sudut pandang feminisme, ada hal-hal yang dibenarkan dalam pola pikir feminis dan ada  penyimpangan-penyimpangan yang mengakibatkan perspektif feminis tidak dihargai.Abstract:The short story of “Perempuan dalam Perang” is one of the short stories in Kumpulan Cerpen Afrika (A collection of African short stories) entitled Kenapa Tidak  Kau Pahat Binatang Lain. The collection of the short stories published in 2005 and translated by Sapardi Djoko Damono. The story told us about the downturn of African countries that became the attraction of imperialism to colonize them. African society is treated as an inferior class of their own land by the West, due to the conflict regarding the sociological and psychological suffering of native women in colonialism. One of the psychological suffering experienced by the native  is the change in ideology leading  to moral degradation. Many of them  change  their mindset and action.The applied method is close reading, using a theoretical approach post-colonialism linked to the perspective of feminism because  this story contained the strong gender issue. What happened in the story was a change in a woman mindset who fought against the colonialist, turned into a struggle for herself. She was trying to survive by selling her own esteem. The gender issues are also inherent in this short story. From feminism point of view, there are things justified in feminist mindset and there are deviations resulting in a feminist perspective that is not appreciated.

Sherwood Anderson plays a signifcant role and regards as a signpost in the transitional period contemporary American literature. Moreover, Anderson's writing style exerts a great influence on other writers like Faulkner and Hemingway. Sherwood Anderson has been called the frst of America's "psychological writers" because he frst explored the motivations and frustrations of his fictional characters in terms of Sigmund Freud's theories of psychology. I Want to Know Why is one of his famous short story from his short stories collections The Triumph of the Egg which is one of his most representative works. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the unnamed frst-person narrator, aged ffteen at the time of the events with Freud's theory of three structures of personality. With the help of Freud's psyoanalysis, this essay mainly probes into the inner spiritual world of the narrator in order to locate his own personality.
