In November 2006, Janet McBain was awarded a Scottish Bafta by the Scottish section of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, for ‘outstanding contribution to film in Scotland’. Janet has been the archivist since its foundation in 1976. Here, she talks with the editor about her archive and her own contribution to the development of historical preservation and research into film in Scotland.

Culture and history harbor the beauty of one’s society. In view, the study of artifacts could best explain our cultural and historical background. The study aimed to examine the personal furniture in the museums of Silay City to preserve the culture and tradition of the old society in Silay through material culture analysis. The study is a qualitative research conducted within the context of descriptive and historical research. Interview method was used in gathering information. McClung Fleming’s two conceptual tools of artifact analysis were utilized to help distinguish precise information about its five properties. Personal furniture in Manuel Severino Hofileña Ancestral House and Bernardino-Ysabel Jalandoni Museum were examined and analyze. The result showed that the personal furniture in two museums have significant influence in the culture and tradition of every Filipino-Spanish family in Silay. The study concludes that material culture analysis on the personal furniture could help preserve the culture and tradition of the past. The study further recommends that teachers and students can utilize the result of the study as material for understanding literature, culture, and history. Proper names, also linguistically called toponyms and anthroponyms, embed extensive sociolinguistic, cultural, and historical aspects in the life of any nation. Thus, they have caught the researcher’s attention because of the cultural and historical heritage they preserve in the context of language contact. From one place to another, and one specific period to another, anthroponyms and toponyms offer a wide range of research because of the scientific curiosity researchers have as to know why the name of a person or place exists, where it comes from, who named it, and when it was named so. In other words, the research is carried within spatial and temporal scope. Anthroponymy is the study of proper names of human beings, both individual and collective, while toponymy is the study of proper names of places. This paper aims at showing how place and person names embed cultural and historical features necessary to understand, explain, and preserve a people’s culture and history for a given period. The method used to research this topic is descriptive and it is based on the materials observed from various sources such as street names, hoardings, individual names, just to name a few. Therefore, this study focuses on specific topologies and periods, i.e. names denoting locations where the Rwandan territory has extended in the precolonial, colonial, postcolonial periods, and post-genocide periods.

Este artigo discute as recentes práticas urbanísticas em sítios históricos, destacando aquelas exaltadas, por uns, como um novo e eficiente modo de pensar as cidades e criticadas, por outros, como “culturalismo de mercado”. A essas críticas acrescenta-se outro argumento: o de que tais práticas usam a história do lugar como valor cultural, mas intervêm esvanecendo a sua especificidade e singularidade. Adotando a reconstituição histórica da formação do sítio de Olinda, responde à seguinte indagação: que práticas dos urbanistas levam ao esquecimento ou à memória da história do lugar? Assim, estão relatados fatos do passado que parecem denotar destruição e perda. No decorrer do artigo relaciona-se essa discussão aos relatos de memorialistas e textos de historiadores que informam sobre a formação da então vila da Capitania de Pernambuco.Palavras-chave: história; urbanismo; práticas urbanísticas; organização urbanística; memória; esquecimento. Abstract: This article discusses recent urban practices in historical sites. It highlights those practices which have been praised by some professionals for being a new and efficient way of thinking about towns and cities and criticised by others for being "cultural marketing". Another argument put forward is that some practices consider the history of a place as a cultural value but weaken its uniqueness and singularity through intervention. The article explores the reconstitution of the historical formation of the site of Olinda by answering the following question: which urban planning practices lead to the weakening or the strengthening of the historical preservation of a place? Thus, facts of the past are cited that seem to indicate why the result was destruction and loss. Throughout the article the discussion is related to the descriptions of annalists and texts of historians who report the formation of the then small town in the Captaincy of Pernambuco.Keywords: history; urban planning; practices; urban formation; memory; forgetfulness.
