Purpose The purpose of this paper is to focus on the role of students’ cultural background in explaining their academic performance. Design/methodology/approach The paper aims at achieving the research objective with the use of questionnaires and structural equation modelling (SEM). Findings This paper shows that students’ code of conduct, which is grounded in their cultural background, affects their level of engagement in learning process. The paper supports, on one hand, the idea of extensive use of formative assessment techniques as a way of improving students’ engagement; it argues, on the other hand, that their effectiveness could be limited because of the bad impact of the students’ norms. Originality/value The paper aims at achieving the objective of the research using an interdisciplinary approach borrowing from the field of economics while discussing a research gap that covers a region that require more attention in the field of education.

From this paperwork we see distance learning and its relationship to emerging computer technologies have together offered many promises to the field of education. In practice, however, the combination often falls short of what it attempts to accomplish. Some of the shortcomings are due to problems with the technology; others have more to do with administration, instructional methods, or students. Being positively motivated to take an online course of study, they, nevertheless, face a number of challenges while learning at a distance. These involve low self-organization, lack of control on the instructor’s side, lack of effective interaction, and a sense of isolation, which decrease their satisfaction with an online learning experience.  These findings prove the thesis that to be highly successful and effective distance learning requires considerable attention and commitment on the part of faculty. The role of faculty is manifested in the way the instruction is designed and delivered as well as in the faculty's ability to incorporate relevant course content with the emphasis on student support, interaction and assessment techniques as these are the key issues in effective distance learning.

It has been widely described that cancer genomes have frequent alterations to the epigenome, including epigenetic silencing of various tumor suppressor genes with functions in almost all cancer-relevant signalling pathways, such as apoptosis, cell proliferation, cell migration and DNA repair. Epigenetic alterations comprise DNA methylation, histone modification, and microRNAs dysregulated expression and they play a significant role in the differentiation and proliferation properties of TC. In this review, our group assessed the published evidence on the tumorigenic role of epigenomics in Hurthle cell neoplasms (HCN), highlighting the yet limited, heteregeneous and non-validated data preventing its current use in clinical practice, despite the well developed assessment techniques available. The identified evidence gaps call for a joint endeavour by the medical community towards a deeper and more systematic study of HCN, aiming at defining epigenetic markers in early diagnose, allowing for accurate stratification of maligancy and disease risk and for effective systemic treatment.

A variety of changes have occurred recently in perinatal care that influence the role of the pediatrician. These include new prenatal assessment techniques (ultrasonography and fetal electronic monitoring), an increased attention to the ambiance of delivery with family participation, and more rapid hospital discharge. This review will focus on the role of the general pediatrician in the care of the normal newborn in this new setting. Prenatal Pediatric Visit The pediatrician's role in the care of the normal newborn should begin with the prenatal pediatric visit during the third trimester of the pregnancy. This visit usually occurs in the pediatric office; some practitioners can schedule time for a home visit. This first meeting between parents and pediatrician frequently serves as the foundation for two decades of mutual trust, confidence, and communication. The topics that should be discussed and recorded at this visit are listed in Table 1. Serious potential problems identified during this visit may require discussion with obstetrical and neonatal colleagues. The prenatal visit should include discussions about maternal nutrition; the hazards of alcohol, cigarette smoking, and other drugs to the unborn baby; and the dangers of passive smoking once the infant is home. The pediatrician should inquire about maternal illnesses and medications.

Both the Lisbon Treaty and the new Inter-Institutional Agreement strengthen the role of the European Parliament (EP) as co-legislator. At the same time, European Union (EU) officials increasingly recognise the need for broader acceptance of the principles and agreements of the Better (Smart) Regulation strategy, as proposed in an October 2010 Commission Communication. There is a need to make high quality risk management decisions in a more risk averse environment and a changed policy framework. Indeed, principles supporting better regulation have become more widely adopted by all EU institutions, notably with the Impact Assessment Board (IAB) of the European Commission, which now screens all new proposals. Due to the broad diffusion of these principles, risk assessment techniques have become more widely understood. This trend is particularly salient in four areas of application: (1) the on-going debate between regulating by hazard and regulating by risk; (2) a better understanding of the nature of risk/risk trade-offs, (3) use of benefit/risk assessment, and (4) the Commission Communication regarding the precautionary principle.

During online learning in Covid-19 outbreak, self-regulation is needed more due to the different learning situation and distance between student and teacher. One of the ways to support student self-regulated learning in EFL classes is through the implementation of formative assessment. The aim of this study is to find out the formative assessment that EFL teachers use in online learning and how they perceive the role of formative assessment in supporting students’ self-regulated learning. To get the data, questionnaire adapted from Gan et al. (2019); Pat-El et al. (2013) was utilized. Interviews also were conducted to get deeper understanding about the findings obtained through questionnaire. The findings revealed that during online learning, EFL teachers used a variety of formative assessment techniques, using online platforms that were easy to use. They agreed that students need to have self-regulated learning skills during online learning. However, some of them did not know for sure that the formative assessment they conducted could enhance students’ self-regulated learning since only some students submitted their work. Further research can be done to find out strategies to implement formative assessment using technologies or tools utilized in online learning where the students can get immediate feedback and use it to help them improve their learning.
