ObjectivesDelirium shares symptoms with some mental illnesses. This may lead to misdiagnosis of delirium in psychiatric patients and a risk of inadequate management. Moreover, literature on delirium in psychiatric patients is sparse. The aim was to analyse possible changes in the diagnostic incidence of delirium in psychiatric patients from 1995 to 2011, and to investigate the patients with regard to sex, age, and type of patient.MethodsAll first time ever diagnoses of delirium among psychiatric patients were identified in the nationwide Danish Psychiatric Central Research Register (DPCRR) from 1995 to 2011. The delirium diagnoses include (1) delirium unspecified, (2) delirium with dementia, and (3) drug-related delirium, all in accordance with International Classification of Diseases-10. The incidence rates were age standardised.ResultsA total of 15 680 persons diagnosed with delirium for the first time were identified in the DPCRR between 1995 and 2011. The total incidence rate of delirium has decreased, reaching 8.4/1000 person-years in 2011. In 2011, 2.6% of the demented patients were diagnosed with delirium with dementia. Diagnosis of delirium is significantly more common in men, and the three groups of delirium showed a characteristic age distribution.ConclusionOur incidences were markedly lower when compared with previous studies. This suggests a possible underdiagnosis of delirium in psychiatric hospitals and should be investigated further, as delirium is a serious state and identifying the syndrome is important for sufficient treatment.

Background: Prevalence estimates for the 2 forms of myotonic dystrophy types 1 and 2 (DM1 and DM2) are not exhaustive or non-available. Our aim was to estimate the minimum prevalence of DM1 and DM2 in Italy in the Rome province, applying standards of descriptive epidemiology. Methods: All patients with a molecular diagnosis of DM1/DM2 and residents in the Rome province in 2013 have been enrolled, and the age-standardized prevalence has been calculated, assuming a Poisson distribution and adjusting for age. Results: We identified 395 DM1 patients: the age-standardized prevalence for total, females and males was 9.65, 8.35 and 11.07/100,000, respectively. The mean age of subjects differed considerably according to CTG repeat length (p = 0.001). Forty DM2 patients were identified. The age-standardized prevalence for total, females and males was 0.99, 1.07 and 0.90/100,000, respectively. The mean age was 57.05. Conclusions: We estimated for the first time the age-standardized prevalence and the sex and age distribution of DM1 and DM2 in a general population. A higher prevalence of males in DM1 and females in DM2 and a higher mean age of DM2 patients (+8 years) were ascertained. Prevalence of DM2 was 10% that of DM1. These prevalence values are probably lower than mutational rates due to the incomplete penetrance of DM1 mutations and to the clinical elusiveness of DM2. Our findings will be useful in designing cohort studies and for developing a disease registry.


For the first time, a complete life cycle of a siphonophore has been achieved in culture at different temperatures, in the small species Muggiaea kochi . The larval, polygastric and eudoxid stages are described, and their duration and rate of production determined. The results show that the cycle from egg to egg lasts two weeks at 24 °C and three weeks at 18 °C. Furthermore, two types of life cycle have been observed: a short cycle at 18 °C and 24 °C characterized by a short (2-3 weeks) polygastric phase, and a long cycle at 13 °C marked by the persistence of a stationary polygastric phase. The experimental results are discussed in relation to the seasonal distribution of the species in the Bay of Villefranche-sur-mer.
