IntroductionThe national service is a duty for every Tunisian citizen. The knowledge of psychiatric causes of unfitness for military service would enable developing standardized procedures for selecting and psychiatric assessment of young candidates.ObjectivesDetermination of the diagnostic categories, frequency and factors associated with psychiatric causes of unfitness for military service.MethodThis was a retrospective, descriptive study, performed on medical files of candidates examined between the 1st of January and the 31st of December 2015 at the military hospital of Tunis.ResultsEight hundred and seventy-two subjects were examined as a part of an assessment for mental fitness for military service. They were male, single, with an average age of 23.73 ± 3.5 years. Alcohol was consumed by 17.9% of subjects, cannabis by 12.8% and psychotropic by 4.7%. Fourteen percent had self-mutilation, 8.5% had criminal record and 5.3% had tattoos. Military unfitness was found in 80.8% of cases. The main causes of unfitness were anti-social personality disorder (40.6%), hysterical neurosis (14.9%), adjustment disorders (14.5%) and limited intellectual level (7.5%). The average length of service before found unfit was 9.14 months for anti-social personality, 5.94 months for adjustment disorders and 1.78 months for psychotic disorders. This period was significantly longer for the personality disorders (8.62 months) compared to psychotic disorders (P = 0.013) or to non-psychotic disorders (5.05 months, P < 0.001).ConclusionThe evaluation on the mental ability of military personnel must be performed at an early date, given the financial, material and human consequences that would result from a delayed diagnosis.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

Frequency of Musculoskeletal and Eye Symptoms among Computer Users at WorkComputer users most often complain of the eye and locomotor system disorders. The goal of this paper was to find out the frequency and relation between musculoskeletal and eye symptoms among computer workers. The data on musculoskeletal and eye symptoms were provided by two questionnaires. Forty-nine workers were included in the study. Their mean age was 41 years and average length of service 16 years. The average amount of time they spent in front of computers was 6.73 hours per day. Women spent more time working at a computer per day than men (P=0.025). The most frequent complaint in the past year referred to the upper back pain (30.6 % of the workers). Every fourth worker, i.e. 24.5 % of them experienced neck pain in the past year; women more often than men (P=0.024). A health problem which reduced the range of motion and prompted the workers to ask for sick leave was lower back pain. The relation between eye symptoms and the upper back pain experienced in the past year (P=0.004), and in the last week (P=0.031) was statistically significant.Proper exercises for stretching musculoskeletal system, ergonomic computer equipment, and artificial tears could decrease muscular and eye problems, which in turn could enhance productivity and reduce sick leaves.

Noticeably, stress has affected the performance of the university’s manpower which result to sagging morale in the workplace. Thus this study evaluated the factors associated with and notions concerning stress of the administration and academic personnel of SLSU. A descriptive-survey method was employed to gather data from the 125 respondents using a Stress Audit instrument adopted from Miller and Smith (1993). The data gathered were consolidated and statistically analyzed using percentages and Pearson-r. On the whole, the administrative and academic personnel of SLSU had manifested serious susceptibility to stress sources and stress symptoms which were significantly affected by the academic personnel’s age profile, and slightly affected by the length of service of both academic and administrative staff. The academic personnel’s number of office designations had affected both their perspective on stress sources and symptoms. It can be deduced that the SLSU administrative and academic personnel’s notions concerning stress sources and symptoms vary due to the nature and gravity of the tasks they perform. Therefore, it is recommended that a comprehensive “Welfare Administration Program” for the SLSU personnel be implemented to reduce health risks caused by stress and to promote the welfare and well-being of all SLSU employees. Keywords - Stress susceptibility, stress sources, stress symptoms, performance, academic staff, administrative personnel

ABSTRACT Objective: to analyze the work process of nursing professors. Method: descriptive, exploratory and qualitative study, developed with a focus on critical epidemiology, carried out at a School of Nursing in Chile. The research subjects consist of 17 nursing professors, with whom individual semi-structured interviews were carried out and nine participated in a focus group. The Ethics Committee approved this study. Results: 88.2% were female, mean age of 42 years, 47% were married, 94% were Chilean, average length of service in the institution of 2.8 years, and 23.5% had a master’s degree. Regarding the work process, the students were the work object, the tools used were the knowledge and the experience as a nurse, and the work environment was considered good. Regarding the form of work organization, 76% have a 44-hour workweek, the wage was considered inadequate and the workload was higher than foreseen in the contract. The dialectic of the nursing work process is evidenced, demonstrating the contradiction between the low wages and labor overload and the narratives reporting a good work environment, personal fulfillment and transcendence that goes far beyond work. Conclusions: the work process allows describing the work components of the nursing professors, which are consistent with the results of the literature and show the dialectic of the nursing work process.

The study focuses on examining the adaptive skills and specifics of professional self-esteem of the penitentiary system officials with varying levels of success in adapting to their duty performance. 50 individuals took part in the questioning: 25 men and 25 women aged 24-51 (the average age is 33), with 1 to 5 years of experience (the average length of service is 4 years). Five methods were used for diagnosis. For data processing we used Kruskal-Wallis one-way analysis of variance and correlation analysis. The results of the study indicate that the effectiveness of adaptation is helped by the official's psychological qualities such as the internal locus of control, mental stability, adaptive and communicative skills, moral normativity. The more successfully an official adjusts to the conditions and content of his/her official duties, the more positive his/her professional self-esteem is, the greater are his/her self-efficacy, professional and life satisfaction. Difficulties in the officials' adaptation to their professional environment entail a decline in their general state, emergence of somatovegetative disorders, reduced motivation for work, deterioration of their social interaction.
