The impact of emerging technologies on economic regulators

Emerging technologies have always played an important role in armed conflict. From the crossbow to cyber capabilities, technology that could be weaponized to create an advantage over an adversary has inevitably found its way into military arsenals for use in armed conflict. The weaponization of emerging technologies, however, raises challenging legal issues with respect to the law of armed conflict. As States continue to develop and exploit new technologies, how will the law of armed conflict address the use of these technologies on the battlefield? Is existing law sufficient to regulate new technologies, such as cyber capabilities, autonomous weapons systems, and artificial intelligence? Have emerging technologies fundamentally altered the way we should understand concepts such as law-of-war precautions and the principle of distinction? How can we ensure compliance and accountability in light of technological advancement? This book explores these critical questions while highlighting the legal challenges—and opportunities—presented by the use of emerging technologies on the battlefield.

The digital transformation of supply chains should revolutionize entire management processes and improve various aspects of sustainability. In particular, the plans of Industry 4.0 aim towards a digitization of several procedures by exploiting emerging technologies such as the Internet of Things, RFID and blockchain. The purpose of this study is to highlight how order and disruption events processes can be improved with the adoption of emerging technologies and how this reflects on the improvement of sustainability aspects. The study is based on the comparison of two simulation scenarios between three actors in the cheese supply chain. In particular, a first traditional scenario “as is” is simulated without the use of new technologies and is compared to a second scenario “to be” that adopts IoT, RFID and blockchain. The results show an improvement in time performance for managing both perfect and non-compliant orders. The developed framework highlights the impact of new technologies on sustainability aspects, showing further managerial implications.

Technologies continue to evolve and to largely transform business practices. In the near future, a few technologies, such as Internet of Things (IoT), Augmented Reality (AR), additive manufacturing (3D printing), and robots, can substantially influence businesses. The reason to focus specifically on these technologies as leading factors for organizational change is twofold: first, there already exist many prototypes and pilot experiments; and second, these technologies have the potential to provoke substantial breakthroughs, leading to substantial business changes. The chapter proposes an overall vision about the impact of these four emerging technologies on business practices and how they will fuel substantial business transformation. The chapter starts with a short analysis how IT influences the core business models and value formation. Then, the authors present the state of the art in e-business technologies and current emerging trends. Finally, the authors propose a detailed overview and discussion of the newly emerging bridge technologies, illustrating with examples their role and economic potential.

Narrative technology has been a prominent feature in educational value creation. Rapid penetration of internet and better digital infrastructure resulted in adoption of emerging technologies in education sector. As business of EdTech platforms soared up, the purpose of this research was to understand the impact of emerging technologies like big data analytics, cloud-based technologies, blockchain, machine learning, artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and virtual reality on various stages of EdTech value chain. This involved content creation, content distribution, and learning plus management system. A secondary data base case study analysis was carried out of EdTech firms in India. The value factors such as cost, accessibility, ease of use, and updated content came out as main attributes impacting acceptance of EdTech platforms. The mentioned emerging technologies impacted the content creation, delivery, evaluation, and feedback stages which resulted in improved performance across these value factors with lesser associated total costs.

The field of public mental health has seen many advances in policy and discovery, yet there is much more to be done. We must move beyond a narrow focus on clinical interventions to now embrace the impact of community and population dynamics in promoting mental health, preventing mental illnesses, and fostering recovery. We must take advantage of emerging technologies, tools and strategies to expand discovery of the causes of mental illness that will inform new prevention and treatment strategies. Emerging tools can also guide the best implementation of individual and systems-level changes. Finally, we must continue to monitor the frequency of illness and related outcomes among individuals and populations to gauge our progress and highlight areas for continued improvement.

More than a decade after Prensky’s influential articulation of digital natives and immigrants, great disagreement exists around these characterizations of students and the impact of such notions within higher education. Perceptions of today’s undergraduate learners as tech-savvy “digital natives” (Prensky, 2001a), who both want and need the latest emerging technologies in all learning situations, continue to dominate the discourse in education technology research and practice. Popular yet largely unsubstantiated conceptions of digital natives are often embedded within the assumptions of contemporary research on student perceptions of emerging technologies, seemingly without regard for a growing body of evidence questioning such notions. In order to promote critical discussion in the higher education community considering potential directions for further research of these issues, especially within the Canadian context, the purpose of this review of recent literature is to analyze key themes emerging from contemporary research on the Net generation as digital natives. Plus d'une décennie après la célèbre distinction de Prensky entre les natifs et les immigrants du monde numérique, un désaccord important existe à propos de ces caractérisations des élèves et de leur impact dans l'enseignement supérieur. Le discours dominant dans la recherche et la pratique des technologies de l’éducation perpétue une représentation des étudiants d’aujourd’hui comme étant des «natifs du numérique» hautement qualifiés (Prensky, 2001a), désirant et requérant à la fois les dernières technologies dans toutes les situations d'apprentissage. Ces conceptions populaires mais controversées continuent à être au coeur de plusieurs hypothèses de la recherche contemporaine sur les perceptions des élèves à l’égard des nouvelles technologies, et ce, au mépris d’un nombre croissant de preuves contraires. Afin de promouvoir la discussion critique dans la communauté de l'enseignement supérieur, laquelle s’est engagée dans une réflexion sur les orientations possibles pour des recherches plus poussées sur ces questions, en particulier dans le contexte canadien, cette revue de la littérature récente a pour but d'analyser les principaux thèmes et problèmes issus de la recherche contemporaine sur la génération de l’Internet ou des natifs du monde numérique.
