A kinematic self-similar rupture process for earthquakes

Abstract The basic assumption that the self-similarity and the spectral law of the seismic body-wave radiation (e.g., ω-square model) must find their origin in some simple self-similar process during the seismic rupture led us to construct a kinematic, self-similar model of earthquakes. It is first assumed that the amplitude of the slip distribution high-pass filtered at high wavenumber does not depend on the size of the ruptured fault. This leads to the following “k-square” model for the slip spectrum, for k > 1/L: Δ~uL(k)=CΔσμLk2, where L is the ruptured fault dimension, k the radial wavenumber, Δσ the mean stress drop, μ the rigidity, and C an adimensional constant of the order of 1. The associated stress-drop spectrum, for k > 1/L, is approximated by Δ~σL(k)=ΔσLk. The rupture front is assumed to propagate on the fault plane with a constant velocity v, and the rise time function is assumed to be scale dependent. The partial slip associated to a given wavelength 1/k is assumed to be completed in a time 1/kv, based on simple dynamical considerations. We therefore considered a simple dislocation model (instantaneous slip at the final value), which indeed correctly reproduces this self-similar characteristic of the slip duration at any scale. For a simple rectangular fault with isochrones propagating in the x direction, the resulting far-field displacement spectrum is related to the slip spectrum as u˜(ω)=FΔ~u(kx=1Cdωv,ky=0), where the factor F includes radiation pattern and distance effect, and Cd is the classical directivity coefficient 1/[1 − v/c cos (θ)]. The k-square model for the slip thus leads to the ω-square model, with the assumptions above. Independently of the adequacy of these assumptions, which should be tested with dynamic numerical models, such a kinematic model has several important applications. It may indeed be used for generating realistic synthetics at any frequency, including body waves, surface waves, and near-field terms, even for sites close to the fault, which is often of particular importance; it also provides some clues for estimating the weighting factors for the empirical Green's function methods. Finally, the slip spectrum may easily be modified in order to model other power-law decay of the radiation spectra, as well as composite earthquakes.

Abstract The familiar linear relation (Gutenberg-Richter) between the logarithm of the number of earthquakes and their magnitude is commonly ascribed to the distribution (fractal) of fault sizes in a self-similar process. We show that a concept of earthquake quanta whose failure is governed by simple physics and suggested by observations explains not only the Gutenberg-Richter relation but also the relatively constant stress drop for larger magnitude events. Results from computer simulation are consistent with observations from detailed seismicity studies.

abstract The El Golfo earthquake of August 7, 1966 (mb = 6.3, MS = 6.3) occurred near the mouth of the Colorado River at the northern end of the Gulf of California. Synthetic seismograms for this event were computed for both the body waves and the surface waves to determine the source parameters of the earthquake. The body-wave model indicated the source was a right lateral, strike-slip source with a depth of 10 km and a far-field time function 4 sec in duration. The body-wave moment was computed to be 5.0 × 1025 dyne-cm. The surface-wave radiation pattern was found to be consistent with that of the body waves with a surface-wave moment of 6.5 × 1025 dyne-cm. The agreement of the two different moments indicates that the earthquake had a simple source about 4 sec long. A comparison of this earthquake source with the Borrego Mountain and Truckee events demonstrates that all three of these earthquakes behaved as high stress-drop events. El Golfo was shown to be different from the low stress-drop, plate-boundary events which were located on the Gibbs fracture zone in 1967 and 1974.

<p>The use of Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) presents unique advantages for earthquake monitoring compared with standard seismic networks: spatially dense measurements adapted for harsh environments and designed for remote operation. However, the ability to determine earthquake source parameters using DAS is yet to be fully established. In particular, resolving the magnitude and stress drop, is a fundamental objective for seismic monitoring and earthquake early warning. To apply existing methods for source parameter estimation to DAS signals, they must first be converted from strain to ground motions. This conversion can be achieved using the waves’ apparent phase velocity, which varies for different seismic phases ranging from fast body-waves to slow surface- and scattered-waves. To facilitate this conversion and improve its reliability, an algorithm for slowness determination is presented, based on the local slant-stack transform. This approach yields a unique slowness value at each time instance of a DAS time-series. The ability to convert strain-rate signals to ground accelerations is validated using simulated data and applied to several earthquakes recorded by dark fibers of three ocean-bottom telecommunication cables in the Mediterranean Sea. The conversion emphasizes fast body-waves compared to slow scattered-waves and ambient noise, and is robust even in the presence of correlated noise and varying wave propagation directions. Good agreement is found between source parameters determined using converted DAS waveforms and on-land seismometers for both P- and S-wave records. The demonstrated ability to resolve source parameters using P-waves on horizontal ocean-bottom fibers is key for the implementation of DAS based earthquake early warning, which will significantly improve hazard mitigation capabilities for offshore and tsunami earthquakes.</p>

abstract A model for the far-field acceleration radiated by an incoherent rupture is constructed by combining Madariaga's (1977) theory for the high-frequency radiation from crack models of faulting with a simple statistical source model. By extending Madariaga's results to acceleration pulses with finite durations, the peak acceleration of a pulse radiated by a single stop or start of a crack tip is shown to depend on the dynamic stress drop of the subevent, the total change in rupture velocity, and the ratio of the subevent radius to the acceleration pulse width. An incoherent rupture is approximated by a sample from a self-similar distribution of coherent subevents. Assuming the subevents fit together without overlapping, the high-frequency level of the acceleration spectra depends linearly on the rms dynamic stress drop, the average change in rupture velocity, and the square root of the overall rupture area. The high-frequency level is independent, to first order, of the rupture complexity. Following Hanks (1979), simple approximations are derived for the relation between the rms dynamic stress drop and the rms acceleration, averaged over the pulse duration. This relation necessarily depends on the shape of the body-wave spectra. The body waves radiated by 10 small earthquakes near Monticello Dam, South Carolina, are analyzed to test these results. The average change of rupture velocity of Δv = 0.8β associated with the radiation of the acceleration pulses is estimated by comparing the rms acceleration contained in the P waves to that in the S waves. The rms dynamic stress drops of the 10 events, estimated from the rms accelerations, range from 0.4 to 1.9 bars and are strongly correlated with estimates of the apparent stress.

abstract Wood-Anderson seismograms recorded at Mount Hamilton (MHC, 185 km, 327°), Santa Barbara (SBC, 180 km, 158°), and Tinemaha (TIN, 240 km, 56°) provide data for comparing P-wave spectra for two immediate (17-min) foreshocks, one early (55-hr) foreshock, two aftershocks, and two “isolated” Parkfield earthquakes. All are ML 5.0 shocks with epicenters within 7 km of the common epicenter of the 1934 and 1966 Parkfield main shocks. The set of events is well suited for testing the hypothesis that foreshocks are high-stress-drop sources. Calculated stress drops are controlled by source directivity at azimuths aligned with the fault break (at MHC and SBC). P-wave radiation from the three foreshocks is focused along one fault trace azimuth, suggesting that foreshock sources are characterized by pronounced unilateral rupture expansion. At TIN, broadside to the fault where directivity has minimum effect on calculated relative stress drop, the two immediate foreshocks are higher stress-drop sources. The early foreshock is a low-to-average stress-drop source, indicating the possibility that stress concentration is a rapidly occurring phenomenon in rupture nucleation. Alternatively, the stress field is highly variable on the scale of 2 to 3 km in the focal region of an impending earthquake with a rupture length of 20 to 30 km.

We present a broadband kinematic model based on a self-similar k-square distribution of the coseismic slip, with an instantaneous rise-time and a constant rupture velocity. The phase of the slip spectrum at high wave number is random. This model generates an ?-squared body-wave radiation, and a particular directivity factor C2d scaling the amplitude of the body-wave spectra, where Cd is the standard directivity factor. Considering the source models with a propagating pulse and a finite rise-time, we assume that within the slipping band, the rupture has some random character, with small scale rupture in various directions. With such a model, the pulse cannot be resolved, and the directivity factor is still C2d at low frequency; at periods shorter than the rise-time, however, the directivity effect drops to much smaller rms values. This frequency dependent directivity effect, which is expected to be the strongest for sites located in the direction of rupture, was evidenced for the Landers 1992 earthquake, leading to a 2 to 3 s rise-time of the slip pulse. This kinematic model can be used with more refined theoretical Green's functions, including near-field terms and surface waves, or with empirical Green's functions, for generating realistic broadband records in the vicinity of moderate to large earthquakes, in a frequency range relevant for engineering applications (0 Hz to about 20 Hz).

<p>Numerical models are well-suited to overcome limited spatial-temporal observations to understand earthquake sequences, which is fundamental to ultimately better assess seismic hazard. However, high-resolution numerical models in 3D are computationally time and memory consuming. This is not optimal if the aspects of lateral or depth variations within the results are not needed to answer a particular objective. In this study we quantify and summarize the limitations and advantages for simulating earthquake sequences in all spatial dimensions.</p><p> </p><p>We simulate earthquake sequences on a strike-slip fault with rate-and-state friction from 0D to 3D using both quasi-dynamic and fully dynamic approaches. This cross-dimensional comparison is facilitated by our newly developed, flexible code library <em>Garnet</em>, which adopts a finite difference method with a fully staggered grid. We have validated our models using problems BP1-QD & FD and BP4-QD & FD of the SEAS (Sequences of Earthquakes and Aseismic Slip) benchmarks from the Southern California Earthquake Center.</p><p> </p><p>Our results demonstrate that lower-dimensional/quasi-dynamic models are qualitatively similar in terms of earthquake cycle characteristics to their higher-dimensional/fully-dynamic counterparts, while they could be hundreds to millions times faster at the same time. Quantitatively, we observe that certain earthquake parameters, such as stress drop and fracture energy release, can be accurately reproduced in each of these simpler models as well. However, higher dimensional models generally produce lower maximum slip velocities and hence longer coseismic durations. This is mainly due to lower rupture speeds, which result from increased energy consumption along added rupture front directions. In the long term, higher dimensional models produce shorter recurrence interval and hence smaller total slip, which is mainly caused by the higher interseismic stress loading rate inside the nucleation zone. The same trend is also observed when comparing quasi-dynamic models to fully dynamic ones. We extend a theoretical calculation that to first order approximates the aforementioned physical observables in 3D to all other dimensions. These theoretical considerations confirm the same trend as what is observed for stress drop, recurrence interval and total slip across dimensions. These findings on similarities and differences of different dimensional models and a corresponding quantification of computational efficiency can guide model design and facilitate result interpretation in future studies.</p>
