AbstractThis article addresses the question of the significance of tradition and secrecy for magical practitioners from various occult groups of the twenty-first century. The observations are based upon the results of an interview study alongside an analysis of contemporary literature concerning the practice of magic. The significance which is attached to the “occult” tradition, the transmission of esoteric knowledge and the figure of the person teaching this knowledge correlates very strongly with the spiritual alignment of the magical practice. This is especially pronounced among mystery schools which are oriented towards “white magic”. These concepts, however, play only a relatively marginal role. The same is not true with regard to aspects of secrets and secrecy. Although the distinct influence of a postmodern relativisation can be ascertained here, secrecy nevertheless remains significant in both theory and practice. The social functionality of secrecy such as was characteristic of the secret societies of the Enlightenment can, however, no longer be taken for granted. In this regard, the cultural situation of the twenty-first century has changed too much.

The ideas of Friedrich Schleiermacher contributes hugely to the understanding of the concept of religion. Many scholars have published on the significance of Schleiermacher for theology, philosophy and hermeneutics. In response to the Enlightenment thought, Schleiermacher constructed a reappraisal of what religion is. His emphasis on intuition and feeling, steered away from the rational interpretation of religion which placed human cognition at the centre of religion. For Schleiermacher religion should indicate a self-transcendence and a feeling of dependence. In the current era of technocracy, human knowledge and experience is reduced to that which is accessible via technology. Whether technology becomes the medium or object of veneration, surely vary from context to context. Schleiermacher provides direction under the current paradigm, to search for meaning where the human spirit connects with a meaningful other. In order to address this endeavour, this research makes use of a literature study. The goal of this article is to identify the border between superstition and religion by attempting to illuminate the boundaries of religion. It is, according to David Chidester, precisely at the boundaries where religion is best understood.Contribution: The article highlights the importance of the theories created by Schleiermacher and how it applies within a current context where a distinction between religion and superstition is necessary. The research addresses the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, numbers 10 (reducing inequalities), 11 (sustainable communities) and 16 (peace, justice and strong institutions).

In 1982, Frank Rigler challenged limnologists and fisheries biologists to address gaps in theory, experimental research, and management practices that have limited the advancement of both fields. We followed up on Rigler’s concerns using a literature study to determine the objectives and methodologies of studies across a range of subdisciplines within aquatic science. We surveyed both recent and historical literature from five leading journals that range in emphasis to include a broad array of subjects in aquatic science. Literature from 1982 was compared with recent publications to determine how communication and integration within aquatic science has changed. We found limited changes in the breadth of coverage provided by any journal. We further analyzed contemporary literature according to subject matter, methods of analysis, location of the research, and scale of study. We used correspondence analysis to identify the differences and associations across these fields and to uncover those particular research areas that have more clearly bridged some of these gaps previously identified. Our findings indicate that there are still clear divisions within modern aquatic science literature and that the journals considered typically show specific emphasis in the types of questions posed, methods of analysis, and the geographic representation of authors.
