This interesting volume is the result of a proper symposium rather than a collection of submitted reports. The authoritative findings are sprinkled generously with a free flowing discussion which brings sharply into focus what remains to be learned and how to go about it. The 22 well-qualified participants include 17 from Great Britain, 4 from the European continent, and 1 from the United States. Wisely included are the observations of a veterinarian-scientist; lessons learned from studies made primarily to prevent economic losses in animals may become useful to clinicians.

Comparing European and North American policies with respect to “civil rights” is a difficult exercise for two reasons. First, it is important to emphasize that Europe and the United States are not political entities of a same nature. Granted, the fact that the nations that today comprise Europe are heirs of common history explains in part the similarities in their political behavior and distinguishes them as a group from the “New World.” Yet in the American case, despite the country's federalist structure and the existence of fifty states within the Union, we are dealing with a single nation, endowed with a central government capable of generating policies that are valid throughout the territory. Such is not the case with Europe. As is well known, the European continent is divided into two sharply contrasted spheres. On the one hand, there is the East, thrown into confusion by the devastation of communism and mired in a profound economic crisis. On the other hand, there is the West, comprised of nations that share a level of economic prosperity comparable to that of the United States but which do not form a single political entity. At present, the European Economic Community includes only twelve European states; the remaining countries, such as Switzerland, Sweden, and Austria, have yet to become members. In this essay, the question of “civil rights” will be examined specifically in light of those countries that already belong to the EEC.

It is a peculiarity of the European continent that there are four independent Anglican jurisdictions side by side: the Church of England with its Diocese in Europe, The Episcopal Church, based in the United States of America, with its Convocation of Episcopal Churches in Europe, and the Lusitanian and Spanish Reformed Episcopal Churches which are extra-provincial dioceses in the Anglican Communion. Alongside these, there are the Old Catholic Churches of the Union of Utrecht, with dioceses in the Netherlands, Germany, Austria and Switzerland. All of them are in full communion with each other, but they lack a comprehensive jurisdictional structure; consequently, there are cities where two or three bishops exercise jurisdiction canonically totally separately.

The Amsterdam School is an architectural stream developed in the Netherlands between 1915 and 1930. The influence was so wide that the whole European continent and the United States of America were affected. Indonesia as one of the colonies of the Netherlands also experienced its influence directly and indirectly. This article is an early study dealing with how far the Amsterdam School has influenced the colonial architecture in the then Dutch East Indies. Abstract in Bahasa Indonesia : Amsterdam School adalah aliran arsitektur yang berkembang di Belanda antara th. 1915-1930. Pengaruhnya sangat luas, bahkan sampai keseluruh benua Eropa dan Amerika Serikat. Indonesia sebagai negara bekas jajahan Belanda waktu itu tidak luput dari pengaruh langsung maupun tidak langsung dari aliran tersebut. Tulisan ini merupakan studi awal yang membahas sampai sejauh mana pengaruh Amsterdam School pada perkembangan arsitektur kolonial di Hindia Belanda waktu itu. Mann’s increasingly spectral presence on the European continent during the early 1940s precipitated a crisis of confidence in the United States as well. The author was already well into his sixties when the Second World War broke out, and he had never thought of himself as anything else but a German writer. Publicly, he unflaggingly reiterated his confidence that the Nazis would be defeated.
