With the aim to take advantage from the existing technologies in microelectronics, photodetectors should be realized with materials compatible with them ensuring, at the same time, good performance. Although great efforts are made to search for new materials that can enhance performance, photodetector (PD) based on them results often expensive and difficult to integrate with standard technologies for microelectronics. For this reason, the group IV semiconductors, which are currently the main materials for electronic and optoelectronic devices fabrication, are here reviewed for their applications in light sensing. Moreover, as new materials compatible with existing manufacturing technologies, PD based on colloidal semiconductor are revised. This work is particularly focused on developments in this area over the past 5–10 years, thus drawing a line for future research.

The goal of this paper is an account of the role of tense and aspect in mirative constructions in Spanish. I propose that the past tense morphology and the imperfect/perfect morphology in Spanish miratives contribute their standard meanings to the semantics of mirativity. I define mirativity as the clash between the speaker’s previous beliefs and the current state of affairs asserted by the proposition. I propose a M operator that relates the speaker’s beliefs and the proposition by ranking the worlds in which the proposition doesn’t hold in the speaker’s previous beliefs as better ones. The past tense is interpreted outside the proposition, and constitutes the time argument of the modal base (doxastic domain). Aspect gets its usual interpretation in the proposition but also in the alternative propositions that order the worlds in the modal base. This way, differences regarding the imperfect mirative and the pluperfect one are accounted for. Finally, the paper also discusses stative miratives, which apparently challenge part of the analysis. I claim that these are not counter examples, but rather confirmation of the analysis, once we account for the interaction between miratives, statives and lifetime effects.

Abstract Context The transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy vestibular approach (TOETVA) is a recently described procedure for surgical management of select thyroid pathology that avoids a cutaneous scar. TOETVA is far from the first described remote-access approach to the thyroid. In fact, numerous such techniques have been described over the past 20 years, although none has gained widespread implementation in North America or Europe. However, with its rapid growth worldwide and excellent outcomes to date, TOETVA may succeed where these prior techniques have failed. Evidence Acquisition The English literature was reviewed using the following keywords: transoral thyroidectomy, remote-access thyroidectomy, minimally invasive thyroidectomy, and TOETVA. Because three systematic reviews of this technique were recently conducted, this manuscript does not seek to provide a fourth. Rather, we summarize salient findings from these reviews and focus on candidates for the procedure, technique-specific characteristics that have led to early success with TOETVA, and prospects for the future. Evidence Synthesis TOETVA is the only thyroidectomy approach obviating the need for a cutaneous incision, and it offers several advantages over previously described remote-access thyroidectomy techniques. These include a favorable anatomic surgical perspective, a comparatively short learning curve, no requirement for expensive instrumentation, and a broad inclusion criterion. These characteristics have facilitated the excellent surgical outcomes to date. Conclusions TOETVA is a suitable surgical option with proven safety and feasibility for a carefully selected patient population. The potential value of the procedure outside enhanced cosmesis continues to be defined.

Cyberbullying has become a recent threat to the K-12 age group over the past couple of decades. Per the author, this chapter addresses ways to define cyberbullying, the history regarding when it emerged and current societal challenges, recognition and advancements of regulations, and the introduction of local laws, challenges with enforcing regulations, and recovery efforts to ensure students can move forward in a healthy and safe school environment. There are a few case studies throughout the chapter that demonstrate the dangers of cyberbullying and further exemplify the aforementioned points. Finally, the chapter offers information that allows readers to grasp the concept of cyberbullying, understand the current state of affairs and determine how each individual, including students, parents, school employees, and others, can play a role in recognizing, addressing, and preventing this issue.

Shoulder arthroplasty is a reliable procedure used to treat glenohumeral arthritis thanks to the efforts of many orthopaedic surgeons and design engineers over the past thirty years. Surgeons such Drs. Charles Neer and Robert Cofield were instrumental to making clinical observations that were effectively translated into improving implant design and clinical outcomes. Yet, there remains much room for further growth and development. With the increase numbers of shoulder arthroplasties performed, new observations and problems have been recognized that remain unanswered.

Marriage and traditional morals have changed drastically for the Adioukrou of Ivory Coast in the past forty years. Many Adioukrou are concerned by the breakdown in family structure. While it is typical that rapid culture change threatens the stability of societies, one must ask why biblical teaching on marriage and morality has not filled the void in this group that has identified itself as Christian over the past seventy years. This paper is a diachronic study which traces significant factors that have led to the current state of affairs. The final section recommends a plan of action. It is hoped that this case study will address the concerns that many other cultures are facing.

The military profession has always been regarded as a typical male profession. This understanding is the result of numerous prejudices in the ability of women to adequately respond to all the challenges that they carry with this service. In the past, it seemed that there was no place for women in the Serbian Army. Women who wanted to serve their homeland in this way were forced to conceal their gender identity. This is also evidenced by the example of the First World War hero Milunka Savić, whose true identity probably remained undetected if she was not wounded. The paper deals with the position of women in the Serbian Army nowtodays, the futures they face and the perspectives for their resolution. The Serbian Armed Forces have made an important step towards greater involvement of women in their ranks, when it is approved that female can be engaged in the duties of officers, non-commissioned officers and professional soldiers in the same way as men. The aim of the paper is to point out the directions of the development of the position of women in the Serbian Army, especially considering the process of its professionalisation.

This paper presents a critical look at the likely demise of Computer Science (CS) as a discipline, in the light of various mishaps that academics in Universities have met with due to trial and error. We trace the issues of the past and present and, identify the reasons why computer science as a discipline in many Universities has not moved with time - in particular why it is not kept up with the pace required by the field. The loss of computer science is also well-reflected in the huge downturn in CS student enrolment across the Anglo-Saxon world. The paper also details some steps on how to change the ways and means of CS academics. We record that some of the arguments and recommendations presented in this paper can be controversial and may not necessarily relate to scenarios that exist in other countries. Further, some of the assertions made are without comprehensive statistical data, as we could not gather them, besides gathering anecdotal evidences.
