An open, randomized clinical study in two groups of reconvalescents of tick-borne encephalitis suffered from postencefalitic somatogenetic asthenia. The first group was consisted of 14 patients who received adamantane derivatives - ladasten at a daily dose of 100 mg for 25 days. The second comparison group included 18 convalescents who were followed up without an prescription of Ladasten. Before and after treatment, the examination with the use of a Visual Analogue Scale fatigue, scale of subjective evaluation fatigue - Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory (MFI-20), Beck Depression Inventory, D. Spielberger's test (State-Trate-Anxiety-Inventory (STAI)), adapted for Russia by Yu. L. Khanin, a questionnaire for detection signs of autonomic changes. After receiving ladasten patients showed significant dynamics of the drop in scores accordingly to visual analogue scale fatigue by 2.5 times as opposed to those in the second group, where the fall was only by 1.4 times. In the first group there were also significant fall in scores of all scales MFI-20 (p = 0.0001), Beck Depression Scale (p = 0.001), Spielberger-Khanin test (p = 0.002) and the questionnaire for evidence of autonomic changes (p = 0.001). The obtained data suggest that Ladasten at a daily dose of 100 mg is highly effective drug with antifatigue, anxiolytic and vegetostabilizing effects and can be recommended in rehabilitation period to patients after the tick-borne encephalitis with manifestations of postencefalitic somatogenetic asthenia.

ABSTRACT Background: Alzheimer dementia (AD) and vascular dementia (VD) are the most common causes of dementia in the elderly. Depression is an important co-morbid disorder in these diseases, which is often challenging to recognize. We investigated the prevalence of depression in patients with AD and VD and estimated the influence of depression on the health-related quality of life (HrQoL) in these patients. Materials and Methods: We evaluated prevalence of depression in consecutively recruited patients with AD or VD (n= 98). Depression was diagnosed according to criteria of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) and scored using the Geriatric Depression Scale. The EuroQol (EQ-5D and visual analogue scale) was applied to evaluate HrQoL. The severity of cognitive impairment was measured by the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Multiple regression analysis was used to identify factors predicting severity of depression. Results: The prevalence of depression in AD/VD was 87%. In comparison to the general population, HrQoL measured on the visual analogue scale was reduced by 54% in patients with AD/VD. In the dimension “anxiety/depression” of the EQ-5D, 81% of patients with AD/VD had moderate or severe problems. Depression showed significant association with reduced HrQoL (P < 0.01). Independent predictors of more severe depression were older age, male gender, better MMSE scores and being not married. Conclusions: Depression is a prevalent psychiatric co-morbidity in patients with AD/VD, which is often under-diagnosed being masked by cognitive impairment. Depression is a predictor of reduced HrQoL in elder people with AD/VD. Therefore, they should be screened for presence of depressive symptoms and receive adequate antidepressant treatment.

Objective: Depression in palliative care patients is often underrecognized. Screening can increase case recognition. The aims of this study were to assess the prevalence of depression in palliative cancer patients attending a pain and symptom control clinic and to investigate the validity and utility of a depression visual analogue scale in detecting depression in the advanced cancer outpatient population.Method: One hundred and thirty-two oncology outpatients who came for consultation at a multidisciplinary pain and symptom control clinic were asked and agreed to complete the Brief Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale (BZSDS; Dugan et al., 1998) and depression visual analogue scale (DVAS).Results: The majority of participants (72%) indicated clinically significant depressive symptoms according to the BZSDS (21% in the “mild” depressive symptoms range, 32% in the “moderate” range, and 19% in the “severe” range). Participants indicated low endorsement rates of items related to overt manifestation of depression (e.g., sadness, tearfulness, irritability, and suicide ideation). The DVAS showed high correlation with the BZSDS (r = .82) and is a potentially useful screening instrument for detecting depressive disorder in palliative care cancer patients.Significance of results: The results of the study underline the importance of routine screening to detect depressive disorder in palliative care patients to improve their quality of care. The depression visual analogue scale was found to be an effective simple screening tool, easy to administer and use.

BACKGROUND: Makuza said that every year, 528 thousand new cases occur and approximately 266 thousand women die from cervical cancer. In cancer patients, the symptoms that are often experienced are a pain. The pain was found to be significantly associated with psychiatric disorders. The pain had a strong relationship with mood disorders in cancer patients. AIM: To determine the correlation between scores of Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale-Depression (HADS-D) in patients with cervical cancer in Vina Cancer Center Hospital in Medan METHODS: This study was an analytical study with a cross-sectional approach to determine the correlation between VAS and HADS-D score between 34 female patients in cervical cancer at Vina Cancer Center Hospital in Medan. RESULTS: VAS was found to be moderate positively significant with HADS-D (p < 0.001, r = 0.59) in patients with cervical cancer in the Hospital Vina Cancer Medan. The value and direction of the correlation (r) VAS and HADS-D score is 0.59. The conclusion drawn value was (p) < 0.001. CONCLUSION: There is a significant correlation between VAS score and HADS-D score in cervical cancer patients, which shows that the higher the VAS score resulted in higher HADS-D scores.

Pendahuluan.
