Integration and islamisation (INI) programmes for undergraduate medical students have been practiced, reviewed and published in many journals. However, there is only a dearth of study on the implementation of such a programme for postgraduate clinical students. Hence, there is a need to examine such a programme because of the different learning environment and characteristic of the students. The aim of this paper is to examine the existing clinical postgraduate programme at IIUM and attempts to improve the INI curriculum. Method: The study employs an analytical method and important factors for the development of the curriculum are analysed to come out with the objective, content, teaching methodology and assessment method suitable for the program. Result: The study identified the important factors that determine the curriculum to be the needs of National Health Service, the mission of the university, the requirement of the professional body and characteristic of the students. The study proposes that the objective of the program is to produce holistic orthopaedic surgeons who understand the belief of Muslim patients and is able to facilitate them in their ibadah and daily life as a Muslims. This is achieved through offering a course which consists of 4 main subjects on the principles of shariah which include the element of Islamic worldview, fiqh ibadah, fiqh muamalah and Islamic moral values with emphasis on issues related to medicine. The teaching method proposed is having regular seminars which consist of presentations and discussion of important concept in Islamic fiqh and followed by case study on fiqh issues related to Medicine. Finally, the students should be assessed from the case write up which they are required to submit before they can sit for the final professional exam. Conclusion: This improved program enables students to complete their study without compromising their duties to provide services at their respective hospitals.

This paper aims to identify different issues and factors which might establish higher efficiency in the teaching process. It relates to the aspect of self-criticism and student-involvement in the learning process and emphasizes student-centered teaching and self-reflection. The term action research itself refers to various techniques and procedures that teachers might use or implement in order to improve their methods of teaching, their theories and/or approaches.According to Richards and Farrell (2005),action research refers to teacher-conducted classroom research that seeks to clarify and resolve practical teaching issues and problems. The terms refer to two dimensions of this kind of activity: the word research in “action research” refers to a systematic approach to carrying out investigations and collecting information that is designed to illuminate an issue or a problem and to improve classroom practice. The word action refers to taking practical action to resolve classroom problems.” (2005, pg. 171)Accordingly, the key questions of the case study are: 1. How am I teaching and am I effective? 2. How can I receive input regarding my teaching methodology? 3. Can I actually change my personal theory and how can my students help me change?Participants in the case study are 50 third year students of IBU, of three different fields of study: English language teaching, Psychology and Psychological counseling and guidance. All three departments attend the common course entitled Educational methodology, which I teach. Participants were asked to provide personal assumptions regarding: the course (the content), the methodology of teaching (techniques, approaches etc.), the materials (coursebook and additional resources) and the teacher (attitude, proficiency, knowledge etc.) by filling in a questionnaire of 20 statements (5 per each area, which will be added in the Appendix). On a scale of strongly agree-neutral-strongly disagree, students were asked to rank each specific statement according to their overall impressions. They were also advised to add additional remarks and suggestions as well. The main aim of gathering such data and information is receiving input on issues which teachers encounter on a daily basis. Furthermore, student-involvement in decision-making and providing suggestions are crucial in teaching nowadays. The results, together with additional theory and practice will be further elaborated in the paper. Future recommendations and implications will also be provided as well.

SummaryThis paper reports on a computerised approach to the management of an epidemiological field trial, which aimed at determining the effects of insecticide-impregnated bed nets on the incidence of malaria in children. The development of a data system satisfying the requirements of the project and its implementation using a database management system are discussed. The advantages of this method of management in terms of rapid processing of and access to data from the study are described, together with the completion rates and error rates observed in data collection.

This paper reports results from a study comparing perceived risk associated with various recycled water uses in two Australian locations, both in the state of Victoria: the capital city Melbourne, and Bendigo a regional urban centre. Both locations are experiencing ‘drought’, but Bendigo is experiencing this in a more acute manner. A case study is used in each location. Both case studies involve future use of recycled water in new commercial buildings. An on-line survey was used to measure attitudes to recycled water of the future occupants of both buildings. The study found perceived risk associated with 11 uses of recycled water increased as the use became increasingly personal. Interestingly, no difference in perceived risk associated with 11 uses of recycled water was found between locations. Prior experience (use) of recycled water was found to be a significant and positive factor in reducing risk perception. Various attitudinal variables were found to be significant influences on perceived risk. Results indicate that reducing perceived risk of recycled water use may increase satisfaction with its use.

Waste load allocation for rivers has been a topic of growing interest. Dynamic programming based algorithms are particularly attractive in this context and are widely reported in the literature. Codes developed for dynamic programming are however complex, require substantial computer resources and importantly do not allow interactions of the user. Further, there is always resistance to utilizing mathematical programming based algorithms for practical applications. There has been therefore always a gap between theory and practice in systems analysis in water quality management. This paper presents various heuristic algorithms to bridge this gap with supporting comparisons with dynamic programming based algorithms. These heuristics make a good use of the insight gained in the system's behaviour through experience, a process akin to the one adopted by field personnel and therefore can readily be understood by a user familiar with the system. Also they allow user preferences in decision making via on-line interaction. Experience has shown that these heuristics are indeed well founded and compare very favourably with the sophisticated dynamic programming algorithms. Two examples have been included which demonstrate such a success of the heuristic algorithms.
