The present research is performed based on the method of source analysis with the objective to study cultural history heritage of the manor at the end of XIX century. Stanisław Kierbedź purchased this property in 1870. The Kierbedź family purchased Naudvaris (pl. Nowy Dwór) Manor in 1789. The old castle only remained authentic nowadays. In the Latvian State Historical Archives case 731, description 174, fund 1679 “The Project of Division of Dluzneva Manor’s” there is a notice that the manor consisted of 42 buildings. Earlier documents (questionnaires of All-Russian population census in 1897) contain information about older manor construction with 11 buildings which were once purchased by the privy counsellor S.Kierbedź. In the manor every person was registered in a book – name, sex, kinship, age, family state, rank, belief, place of birth, mother tongue, education and occupation were recorded. Most of seventy-three people of Lūznava Manor and village of Jaudzemki were farmers.

The present research is performed based on the method of source analysis with the objective to study a cultural and historical heritage of the manor at the end of the XIX century. In the Latvian State Historical Archives documents (questionnaires of the All-Russian population census in 1897) contain information about manor and buildings which were once purchased by M. Reut. Objective historical sources have found references to the families of the Bufališki (Geļenova) and fon Reut family at the end of the 19th century. Therefore, the name of the Gelenova Park can be justified. The population census records are useful for family research.

This research study does not confirm the widespread assertion that Eugenia Kerbedz substantially renovated Riebiņi castle at the end of the 19th century for the work and recreation of artists. The cultural-historical objects mentioned in the paper their potential, including the tourism industry, is not being used. The population census records are useful for family research.

Abstract This article reconstructs the controversies following the release of the figures from Nigeria's 1963 population census. As the basis for the allocation of seats in the federal parliament and for the distribution of resources, the census is a valuable entry point into postcolonial Nigeria's political culture. After presenting an overview of how the Africanist literature has conceptualized the politics of population counting, the article analyses the role of the press in constructing the meaning and implications of the 1963 count. In contrast with the literature's emphasis on identification, categorization, and enumeration, our focus is on how the census results informed a broader range of visual and textual narratives. It is argued that analysing the multiple ways in which demographic sources shape debates about trust, identity, and the state in the public sphere results in a richer understanding of the politics of counting people and narrows the gap between demographic and cultural history.

Francis of Education (print)/1474-8479 (online) Article 2010 Language in education debates in Hong Kong focus on the role and status of English (as the former colonial language and an important means for international communication); Cantonese, the mother tongue of the majority of the population; and Putonghua, the national language of China. This paper examines the language policy formulated in 1997–1998, and finds that it radically departed from previous policies by mandating the use of Cantonese as the medium of instruction in secondary schools. The paper then analyses two subsequent policy revisions and concludes that, while the tonal emphasis on mother-tongue education has remained, the policy revisions have reversed the language policy to previous practices that emphasised the importance of English.

Mother-tongue and mother-tongue education are recognized worldwide as one of the most efficient ways to function cognitively and socially. This article addresses the role of proper mother-tongue education with an emphasis on the importance of “language” since language is vital to a child’s right to a basic education in all its dimensions. Without mother-tongue education, every child’s right to learn and to become a skilful adult, able to participate independently in society, is at risk. The cumulative effect of the South African Constitution, the National Education Policy Act, the South African Schools Act, several international instruments and a number of ground-breaking cases, as well as the interaction between them on mother-tongue education will be examined. The implementation of certain education models will also be proposed.
