Moving target detection is difficult for synthetic aperture radar (SAR). As SAR is designed for imaging of stationary ground scene, the moving targets would be blurred and displaced in conventional SAR imaging. To increase the signal clutter ratio, the moving targets should be refocused while detecting. Based on relative range equation, one can refocus and detect the moving targets simultaneously by searching the relative velocity. This method has been derived and applied for side looking SAR. In this paper, we extend the relative range equation to squint mode. The procedures of the refocusing method are also illustrated. By introducing a parameter of relative squint angle, the imaging position of the moving target is derived. The refocusing method is validated by simulations. The moving target can be optimally refocused, and the refocused position can be parametrized by the relative motion parameters.

Finding out interested targets from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery is an attractive but challenging problem in SAR application. Traditional target detection is independent on SAR imaging process, which is purposeless and unnecessary. Hence, a new SAR processing approach for simultaneous target detection and image formation is proposed in this paper. This approach is based on SAR imagery formation in time domain and human visual saliency detection. First, a series of sub-aperture SAR images with resolutions from low to high are generated by the time domain SAR imaging method. Then, those multiresolution SAR images are detected by the visual saliency processing, and the corresponding intermediate saliency maps are obtained. The saliency maps are accumulated until the result with a sufficient confidence level. After some screening operations, the target regions on the imaging scene are located, and only these regions are focused with full aperture integration. Finally, we can get the SAR imagery with high-resolution detected target regions but low-resolution clutter background. Experimental results have shown the superiority of the proposed approach for simultaneous target detection and image formation.

Video synthetic aperture radar (VideoSAR) can detect and identify a moving target based on its shadow. A slowly moving target has a shadow with distinct features, but it cannot be detected by state-of-the-art difference-based algorithms because of minor variations between adjacent frames. Furthermore, the detection boxes generated by difference-based algorithms often contain such defects as misalignments and fracture. In light of these problems, this study proposed a robust moving target detection (MTD) algorithm for objects on the ground by fusing the background frame detection results and the difference between frames over multiple intervals. We also discuss defects that occur in conventional MTD algorithms. The difference in background frame was introduced to overcome the shortcomings of difference-based algorithms and acquire the shadow regions of objects. This was fused with the multi-interval frame difference to simultaneously extract the moving target at different velocities while identifying false alarms. The results of experiments on empirically acquired VideoSAR data verified the performance of the proposed algorithm in terms of detecting a moving target on the ground based on its shadow.

In recent years, bistatic synthetic aperture radar (SAR) technique has attracted considerable and increasing attention. Compared to monostatic SAR for which only the backscattering is measured, bistatic SAR expands the scattering measurements in aspects of angular region and polarization, and greatly enhances the capability of remote sensing over terrain and sea. It has been pointed out in recent theoretical researches that bistatic scattering measured in the forward region is preferable to that measured in the backward region in lines of surface parameters retrieval. In the forward region, both dynamic range and signal sensitivity increase to a great extent. For these reasons, bistatic SAR imaging is desirable. However, because of the separated positions of the transmitter and receiver, the degrees of freedom in the parameter space is increased and the forward bistatic imaging is more complicated than the backward bistatic SAR in the aspects of bistatic range history, Doppler parameter estimation and motion compensation, et, al. In this study, we analyze bistatic SAR in terms of ground range resolution, azimuth resolution, bistatic range history and signal to noise ratio (SNR) in different bistatic configurations. Effects of system motion parameters on bistatic SAR imaging are investigated through analytical modeling and numerical simulations. The results indicate that the range resolution is extremely degraded in some cases in forward bistatic SAR imaging. In addition, due to the different imaging projection rules between backward and forward bistatic SAR, the ghost point is produced in the forward imaging. To avoid the above problems, the forward bistatic imaging geometry must be carefully considered. For a given application requirement with the desired imaging performances, the design of the motion parameters can be considered as a question of solving the nonlinear equation system (NES). Then the improved chaos particle swarm optimization (CPSO) is introduced to solve the NES and obtain the optimal solutions. And the simulated imaging results are used to test and verify the effectiveness of CPSO. The results help to deepen understanding of the constraints and properties of bistatic SAR imaging and provide the reference to the optimal design of the motion parameters for a specific requirement, especially in forward bistatic configurations.
