The article focuses on the impact of the Covid crisis on schools with Roma children/ children from vulnerable groups. It presents data from three similar questionnaires carried out by Center Amalipe among 200 schools in Bulgaria, members of the network “Every student ccan be a winner”. The articles presents how the schools managed to cope with the pandemic, adapt and find new ways of teaching during the last year and a half. It presents the position of the educational mediators and their role for preventing Roma children from additional drop out during the distance learning period.

Abstract Background As the immigration population continues to grow; little is known about this phenomenon from the immigrants’ perspective. In recent years, nurses have embraced narrative inquiry to better understand the human experience. When relaying their stories, vulnerable groups legitimize their behavior, share their emotional experiences, and amplify their voices that may have otherwise remained silent. Objective Eight elderly Portuguese women who immigrated to the United States (US) were interviewed about their experience of immigration by nursing students from Portugal and U.S., as part of a student exchange. The objective of this project was to better understand the impact of immigration through narrative inquiry. Results On average, the women lived in the US for approximately fifty years; immigrating in their early twenties. Most women arrived alone or accompanied by spouse and/or children. Their first memories were related to snow, and solitude of being in a new country. The participants attended classes to obtain documents or learn English. All worked in the textile industry; their greatest accomplishment was buying their own house. Challenges faced were related to language and difficult jobs. Overall, they had no regrets except in leaving family members behind. Their message to the students was that love and family are most important in the world. Students were able to realize emigration and immigration from their respective countries. Conclusions Rich descriptions provided an in-depth understanding of the details of the women’s experience. Student nurses gained valuable skills and knowledge to understand the impact of immigration among Portuguese women using narrative inquiry. Key messages The use of narrative inquiry proved to be a valuable method to interview Portuguese immigrant women. Every immigrant has a unique narrative to share that allowed for nursing student’s appreciation of the experience across generations.

In connection with the harsh situation in the world in the spring of 2020, there was a problem with the organisation of school education throughout Russia. This article is devoted to the influence of distance learning on the results of the unified state exam in Mathematics (profile level). First of all, the dynamics of the total number of participants in the Maths exam over the past three years was considered. The article goes on to analyse the changes that occurred in 2020 in the content of control and measurement materials for Kostroma Region. The results of the exam participants were analysed in several groups – those who had not reach the minimum score, those who had scored 40 points or less, from 41 to 60 points, from 61 to 80 points and from 81 to 100 test points. Methods of qualitative and quantitative assessment (Pearson's criterion is applied) of percentage distributions of results of exam participants in various groups for 2019-20 years are described. Conclusions are drawn about the impact of the distance learning period on the results of the Maths exam.

The article is based on the distance learning experience in the second half of the 2019/2020 school year. The author focuses on the students’ perspective and points out that the youth’ educational dilemmas compared to traditional education have not so much changed, but have become acute. In order to understand different student attitudes during distance learning, it is necessary to understand their reasons, therefore, the author analyzes the learning conditions, students’ time management skills and the impact of technology on the health and social development of their students.

AbstractThis work focuses on Distance Learning during the COVID-19 pandemic to improve students’ motivation, participation, and engagement, trying to contain the drop-out phenomenon. Distance Learning at the time of COVID-19 is an educational methodology and it can be considered the only occasion to keep an educational connection between students and teachers. Experimentation in a Mathematics STEM class was carried out evaluating the impact of Distance Learning on students’ levels of motivation, participation, and engagement, computed through a Fuzzy Cognitive Map. Specifically, it was performed on some affective and interaction parameters derived from using an adaptive e-learning platform and from the answers of a semi-structured questionnaire. The results, which have been analysed through Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge and Instrumental Genesis theories, show on one hand that Distance Learning is valid as an additional and support methodology but, on the other hand, they highlight the ineffectiveness of completely remote teaching. Therefore, a teaching method that integrates moments of distance teaching with activities carried out in the presence, in the classroom, or in other university environments, is hoped to be used as soon as the emergency is over: a mix of styles, a fluid flow of knowledge between the physical classroom and the virtual classroom. We will call this Integrated Digital Learning.

The objective of this chapter is the analysis of the primary education in Guatemala and if the amount of investment during the period 2002–2015 is significant for the number of children promoted by school year, and if these investments were impacted by the economic crisis of 2008. The results of the investigation demonstrate that the variables with significance where the number of teachers and the budget per year, without relation to economic growth and no impact by the economic crisis on 2008 and with no significant relation with the rate of drop out, which was an important result, especially in primary school. The data analyzed also show that the budget per year for the Ministry of Education doesn't suffer an impact after the economic crisis in 2008, where the author expected to find some problem after the crisis, but that the number of teachers hired in 2009 almost doubles the amount of teachers who were hired in 2008.

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), since the past decades, has been making conscious efforts to reach out to the unreached with its diverse, need-based and affordable, Open and Distance learning (ODL) programmes and has been experimenting with various innovative ideas and methods to cater to the diverse needs of its prospective learners. The University, realizing its mandate to reach out to the unreached, ventured into educational intervention behind bars in its attempt to empower this marginalised section of the population. This intervention caters to the learning needs of both literate and semi-literate prisoners and is aimed at reformation of under trials as well as convicted prisoners; all expenditure under this initiative being borne by the University. IGNOU’s approach, of imparting education to the imprisoned, falls in line with its vision and mission and with the objectives of democratizing higher education; which is the need of time.This paper details the operationalization aspects and status of this initiative of IGNOU. The paper tries to identify the driving forces behind this noble initiative of the University while discussing on the impact of educational intervention of the imprisoned. The paper while discussing on the special/unique skills needed by educators who act as counsellors for jail inmates, stresses on the need for training of such academic counsellors. As rightly said by Skorton and Altschuler, 2013; “Education, offers a humane and effective alternative to the discipline and punish approach, that all too often breeds only hopelessness and recidivism”.

Aim. Due to the Covid-19 (briefly C-19) epidemic, since March 2020 people and institutions have needed to use digital services, i.e. a transfer to life online. This paper analyses the distance learning experiences of children, teenagers and parents during the lockdown in Italy. Reflections are then carried out on the impact of the distance learning at academic level and on the imposed distance mode.Methods. We consider the distance learning experiences of children, youngsters and parents during the lockdown due to the C-19 epidemic in Italy, considering in particular data collected with a survey on a national sample of 1028 children and youngsters, agedbetween 10 and 18 who use the Internet.Results. Society showed unpreparedness for this drastic change, highlighting already pre-existing digital inequalities. The closure of schools has led to over 90% of children and teenagers enrolled in school worldwide to drop out of school. From March 2020 the lockdown measures have been extended to all Italian regions.Conclusions. Italian students lost regular school days by a factor 2.5 times higher than the average of lost days among high-income world countries. Millions of children and teenagers had diffi culties in distance learning activities due to a lack of connectivity and/or inadequate IT tools; many students stopped attending school. Distance learning can be interpreted as an unfortunate piece of this new negative social picture.

A major application of potentiometric dyes has been the multisite optical recording of electrical activity in excitable systems. After being championed by L.B. Cohen and his colleagues for the past 20 years, the impact of this technology is rapidly being felt and is spreading to an increasing number of neuroscience laboratories. A second class of experiments involves using dyes to image membrane potential distributions in single cells by digital imaging microscopy - a major focus of this lab. These studies usually do not require the temporal resolution of multisite optical recording, being primarily focussed on slow cell biological processes, and therefore can achieve much higher spatial resolution. We have developed 2 methods for quantitative imaging of membrane potential. One method uses dual wavelength imaging of membrane-staining dyes and the other uses quantitative 3D imaging of a fluorescent lipophilic cation; the dyes used in each case were synthesized for this purpose in this laboratory.

The burden of caregivers has been intensively researched for the past 30 years and has resulted in a multitude of individual findings. This review illustrates the significance of the hypothetical construct of perceived burden for the further development and design of the homecare situation. Following explanations regarding the term informal caregiver, we derive the construct burden from its conceptual association with the transactional stress model of Lazarus and Folkman. Once the extent and characteristics of burden have been set forth, we then present the impact of perceived burden as the care situation. The question of predictors of burden will lead into the last section from which implications can be derived for homecare and relief of caregivers.

Under the term “Hilfe zur Arbeit” (aid for work) the federal law of social welfare subsumes all kinds of labour disciplining instruments. First, the paper shows the historical connection of welfare and labour disciplining mechanisms in the context of different periods within capitalist development. In a second step, against the background of historical experiences, we will analyse the trends of “Hilfe zur Arbeit” during the past two decades. It will be shown that by the rise of unemployment, the impact of labour disciplining aspects of “Hilfe zur Arbeit” has increased both on the federal and on the municipal level. For this reason the leverage of the liberal paradigm would take place even in the core of social rights.
