The Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) technology offers pervasive communication across heterogeneous devices in a home or small office network. The UPnP specifications are available for devices only to be interoperable together in a home or small office network. This paper proposes an extension of the UPnP technology for application interoperability in a home or small office network. This paper provides an UPnP Application Architecture as an extension to the existing UPnP Device Architecture. This extension enhances the feature of UPnP from device interoperability to application interoperability which enables the applications to discover, control and share data with each other in a home or small office network despite of their device type and operating system. In addition to the UPnP Application Architecture, the UPnP Application Template and UPnP Application Service Template are defined towards the development of UPnP-enabled applications that run on heterogeneous devices in a home or small office network.

The Development of the computer has been from a single machine to the server, and then server clustering technology, and the emerging "cloud" network, which invariably show the network's role in the computer. Meanwhile, more and more high-end hardware trash or the users may be unbearable of high cost of servers, so the use of existing resources and integration of resources has become increasingly important. This paper will detail a virtual network file system, which based on Upnp (Universal Plug and Play) and FUSE (File system in Usese Space) in Linux operating system. In this study, users can share a computer terminal to collect and use that particular computer terminal on the network to all the resources users are interested in, provided that the shared computer terminals must be installed on a specific Upnp device. In this study, we have successfully implemented single-device-side and single-device-side multithread communication under the Linux or windows operating system.

Product lifecycle management (PLM) processes can be greatly improved and extended if more information on the product and its use is available during the various lifecycle phases. The PROMISE project aims to close the information loop by employing product embedded information devices (PEIDs) in products. In this chapter, we present the goals and application scenarios of the project with special focus on the middleware that enables the communication between PEIDs and enterprise applications. Furthermore, we give details of the design and implementation of the middleware as well as the role of Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) as device-level protocol.
