We investigate the use of application layer FEC protection in DVB-T (Digital Video Broadcasting-Terrestrial) networks for the provision of mobile services. Mobile reception is characterized by variations of the received signal caused by fast fading and shadowing. DVB-T was originally designed for fixed and portable reception, and generally does not provide enough quality in mobile environments. The link layer protection mechanism MPE-FEC (Multi Protocol Encapsulation-Forward Error Correction) was standardized in DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting-Handheld) for the protection of mobile TV services. Although DVB-T itself does not incorporate any link or application layer protection mechanism, AL-FEC (Application layer Forward Error Correction) protection can be introduced in DVB-T in a backwards compatible way. By means of AL-FEC, it is possible to improve the robustness of DVB-T services for the provision of mobile TV. In this paper, we explain the concept of AL-FEC protection in DVB-T and evaluate its performance by means of laboratory measurements and dynamic simulations with shadowing. We study different configurations of AL-FEC and compare its performance with MPE-FEC. In this paper, we discuss some implementation aspects of AL-FEC in real scenarios and propose an implementation based on Raptor codes and hash sequences. We also present results obtained by a first AL-FEC prototype for DVB-T that demonstrates the feasibility of the approach.

Polar codes are featured by their low encoding/decoding complexity for symmetric binary input-discrete memoryless channels. Recently, flexible generic Successive Cancellation List (SCL) decoders for polar codes were proposed to provide different throughput, latency, and decoding performances. In this paper, we propose to use polar codes with flexible fast-adaptive SCL decoders in Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) systems to meet the growing demand for more bitrates. In addition, they can provide more interactive services with less latency and more throughput. First, we start with the construction of polar codes and propose a new mathematical relation to get the optimized design point for the polar code. We prove that our optimized design point is too close to the one that achieves minimum Bit Error Rate (BER). Then, we compare the performance of polar and Low-Density Parity Check (LDPC) codes in terms of BER, encoder/decoder latencies, and throughput. The results show that both channel coding techniques have comparable BER. However, polar codes are superior to LDPC in terms of decoding latency, and system throughput. Finally, we present the possible performance enhancement of DVB systems in terms of decoding latency and complexity when using optimized polar codes as a Forward Error Correction (FEC) technique instead of Bose Chaudhuri Hocquenghem (BCH) and LDPC codes that are currently adopted in DVB standards.

Κατά τη διάρκεια των τελευταίων δεκαετιών, η ανάπτυξη μεγάλων δικτύων δεδομένων υψηλής ταχύτητας, για την ανταλλαγή, επεξεργασία και αποθήκευση της ψηφιακής πληροφορίας, ενίσχυσε περαιτέρω την ολοένα αυξανόμενη ανάγκη για αποδοτικά και αξιόπιστα ψηφιακά συστήματα επικοινωνίας και αποθήκευσης δεδομένων. ΄Ενα σημαντικό ζήτημα, σχετικό με τον σχεδιασμό και τη λειτουργία τέτοιων συστημάτων, είναι η Διόρθωση Λαθών (Error Correction) που εξασφαλίζει την χωρίς σφάλματα επικοινωνία κατά τη διάρκεια της μετάδοσης δεδομένων. Πολλά κανάλια επικοινωνίας υπόκεινται σε θόρυβο καναλιού, επομένως είναι εξαιρετικά πιθανό να εισαχθούν σφαλματα κατά τη διάρκεια της μετάδοσης. Η Θεωρία Πληροφορίας (Information Theory) και η Θεωρία Κωδικοποίησης (Coding Theory) εισάγουν τεχνικές διόρθωσης λαθών που επιτρέπουν την αξιόπιστη ανταλλαγή ψηφιακών δεδομένων μέσω αναξιόπιστων καναλιών επικοινωνίας.Οι κώδικες Ελέγχου Ισοτιμίας Χαμηλής Πυκνότητας (Low-Density Parity-Check ή, για συντομία, LDPC) είναι μια υποκατηγορία γραμμικών μπλοκ κωδίκων διόρθωσης λαθών, οι οποίοι επιτυγχάνουν εξαιρετική διορθωτική ικανότητα απαιτώντας μέτρια πολυπλοκότητα αποκωδικοποίησης. Οι κώδικες LDPC χρησιμοποιούνται σε μεγάλο αριθμό βιομηχανικών πρωτοκόλλων για ψηφιακά τηλεπικοινωνιακά συστήματα επόμενης γενιάς, όπως το DVB-S2 (Digital Video Broadcasting), το ITU-T G.hn (home networking), το 10GBASE-T Ethernet, το WiMAX και το WiFi. Η κύρια πρόκληση κατά τον σχεδιασμό ενός συστήματος βασισμένου σε κώδικες LDPC είναι η υλοποίηση αρχιτεκτονικών αποκωδικοποιητή, ικανών να διαχειριστούν αποτελεσματικά την απαίτηση για υψηλή απόδοση διόρθωσης σφαλμάτων και ταχύτητα, σε συνδυασμό με χαμηλή πολυπλοκότητα και κατανάλωση ενέργειας. ΄Ενα βασικό μειονέκτημα των κωδίκων LDPC είναι ότι πολύ συχνά εμφανίζουν το φαινόμενο error floor. Πρόκειται για μια περιοχή στην καμπύλη της μεταβολής του ρυθμού εμφάνισης λανθασμένων δυαδικών ψηφίων (bit error rate ή BER) συναρτήσει του επιπέδου θορύβου καναλιού, όπου η μείωση του BER επιβραδύνεται καθώς μειώνεται το επίπεδο θορύβου. Μεγάλο μέρος της σύγχρονης έρευνας εστιάζει στη βελτίωση την απόδοσης συστημάτων βασισμένων σε κώδικες LDPC, με την ανάπτυξη νέων μεθόδων κατασκευής κώδικα και τη σχεδίαση αποτελεσματικών αλγορίθμων αποκωδικοποίησης.Η παρούσα διατριβή επικεντρώνεται στην ανάπτυξη αποτελεσματικών αλγορίθμων διόρθωσης λαθών (forward error correction ή FEC), και στον σχεδιασμό και υλοποίηση αποδοτικών αρχιτεκτονικών αποκωδικοποιητών LDPC. Αρκετές τεχνικές μελετήθηκαν, προκειμένου να βελτιωθεί η απόδοση αποκωδικοποίησης, ειδικά στην περιοχή λειτουργίας στην οποία εμφανίζεται το error floor. Αποσκοπούμε στη βελτιστοποίηση βασικών σχεδιαστικών παραμέτρων, όπως είναι η δομή του κώδικα LDPC, ο επαναληπτικός αλγόριθμος αποκωδικοποίησης και το σχήμα κβαντισμού της πληροφορίας. Επιπλέον, υλοποιήθηκαν αρχιτεκτονικές αποκωδικοποίησης υψηλής ταχύτητας και αποδοτικότητας υλικού, προκειμένου να ικανοποιηθούν οι αυστηρές προδιαγραφές σε επίπεδο καθυστέρησης και πολυπλοκότητας, τις οποίες επιβάλλουν τα σύγχρονα πρωτόκολλα τηλεπικοινωνιών.

In this paper, an efficient symbol-deinterleaver architecture compliant with the digital-video-broadcasting (DVB) standard is proposed. By partitioning the entire symbol buffer into four separate parts with a special low-conflict access control strategy, the symbol deinterleaver can be implemented with four-bank single-port on-chip memory blocks with slight overhead. The experimental result shows that 30% savings of hard-ware cost can be achieved compared with the conventional double-buffer approach. In addition, a lookahead online circuit of a symbol permuta-tion-address generator is also proposed, which can provide the required permutation addresses every cycle to avoid either the use of a lookup table or an extra temporary buffer. Being the major part of the entire DVB forward-error-correction decoder, the proposed symbol deinterleaver can contribute a great saving of the overall decoder cost.

Research subject. The article presents the results of comparing different 8-bit error-correcting codes by their probabilistic characteristics. Method. Simulation was performed to determine the probabilistic characteristics of 8-bit error-correcting codes. The principles of their coding and decoding are considered. Core results. The probabilistic characteristics of 8-bit error-correcting codes are identified and presented. Recommendations for their application are developed depending on the structure of the using transmission system. Practical relevance. The application of the considered codes for the construction of transmission systems on devices with limited computing resources is proposed. The applicability of these codes in the development of application layer byte protocols that require the use of forward error correction mechanisms in communication channels is noted.
