In this paper we investigated the phase-transformation dynamics of the Cu-3Ti-3Ni-0.5Si alloy by applying the Avrami method to phase-transformation dynamics and electrical conductivity based on the relationship between the electrical conductivity and the volume fraction of precipitates in the Cu-3Ti-3Ni-0.5Si alloy. The results corroborated well with the experimental data. The microstructure and precipitated phases were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The analysis of the selected-area electron-diffraction patterns indicated that the precipitates formed in the matrix of the Cu-3Ti-3Ni-0.5Si alloy during aging, correspond to the Ni3Ti, Ni3Si, and Ni2Si phases. According to the values of formation enthalpy and cohesive energy determined by first-principle calculations, the formation of the Ni2Si phase is more favorable compared to the Ni3Si and Ni3Ti phases, and the Ni3Ti exhibits improved structural stability compared to the Ni2Si and Ni3Si phases.

The main objective of the present study was to understand the oxygen ingress in titanium alloys at high temperatures. Investigations reveal that the oxygen diffusion layer (ODL) caused by oxygen ingress significantly affects the mechanical properties of titanium alloys. In the present study, the high-temperature oxygen ingress behavior of TC21 alloy with a lamellar microstructure was investigated. Microstructural characterizations were analyzed through optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Obtained results demonstrate that oxygen-induced phase transformation not only enhances the precipitation of secondary α-phase (αs) and forms more primary α phase (αp), but also promotes the recrystallization of the ODL. It was found that as the temperature of oxygen uptake increases, the thickness of the ODL initially increases and then decreases. The maximum depth of the ODL was obtained for the oxygen uptake temperature of 960 °C. In addition, a gradient microstructure (αp + β + βtrans)/(αp + βtrans)/(αp + β) was observed in the experiment. Meanwhile, it was also found that the hardness and dislocation density in the ODL is higher than that that of the matrix.

Fly ash from the combustion of eastern Kentucky Fire Clay coal in a southeastern United States pulverized-coal power plant was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and selected area electron diffraction (SAED). TEM combined with elemental analysis via energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) showed that rare earth elements (REE; specifically, La, Ce, Nd, Pr, and Sm) were distributed within glassy particles. In certain cases, the REE were accompanied by phosphorous, suggesting a monazite or similar mineral form. However, the electron diffraction patterns of apparent phosphate minerals were not definitive, and P-lean regions of the glass consisted of amorphous phases. Therefore, the distribution of the REE in the fly ash seemed to be in the form of TEM-visible nano-scale crystalline minerals, with additional distributions corresponding to overlapping ultra-fine minerals and even true atomic dispersion within the fly ash glass.

The Cr precipitation sequence in Cu-Cr-Zr-Ag alloy during the aging process at 450°C could be obtained by Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and High-resolution transmission microscopy (HRTEM) in the study. The strengthening curve shows a unimodal type and the tensile strength trends to peak when the aged for 4h. The Cr phase transformation of Cu-Cr-Zr-Ag aged at 450°C is supersaturated solid sloution→G.P zones→fcc Cr phase→order fcc Cr phase→bcc Cr phase. The orientation relationship between bcc Cr precipitates and the matrix change from cube-on-cube to NW-OR.

Ti3Sn has received increasing attention as a high damping metallic material and as an anode material for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. However, a heated dispute concerning the existence of solid state phase transformation of stoichiometric Ti3Sn impedes its development. Here, thermal-induced reversible phase transformation of Ti3Sn is demonstrated to happen at around 300 K by the means of in-situ variable-temperature X-ray diffraction (XRD) of Ti3Sn powder, which is also visible for bulk Ti3Sn on the thermal expansion curve by a turning at 330 K. The new phase’s crystal structure of Ti3Sn is determined to be orthorhombic with a space group of Cmcm and the lattice parameters of a = 5.87 Å, b = 10.37 Å, c = 4.76 Å respectively, according to selected area electron diffraction patterns in transmission electron microscope (TEM) and XRD profiles. The hexagonal → orthorhombic phase transformation is calculated to be reasonable and consistent with thermodynamics theory. This work contributes to a growing knowledge of intermetallic Ti3Sn, which may provide fundamental insights into its damping mechanism.

Rolling contact fatigue (RCF) involves microstructural change in the subsurface of contact. The changed microstructure is generally termed as white etching area (WEA) as it appears white under optical microscope when etching in nital solution. WEA has been acknowledged as one of the primary failure modes in RCF since it causes severe local inhomogeneity of microstructure. It was reported that WEA consists of nano ferrites as martensite grains and carbides are significantly refined in the WEA. Some carbides are dissolved. In some cases, an amorphous-like structure was occasionally observed in the WEA, indicating that phase transformation may possibly occur. The WEAs were studied by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Electron back scattered diffraction (EBSD). The result showed that WEA is dominated with an amorphous phase with martensite, austenite and carbides embedded interior. A distinct interface between the matrix and the WEA was present. In addition to grain refinement down to nanometers, phase transformation including amorphization and austenitization happened in WEAs. The content of austenite was increased from 2% in the matrix to 20% in the WEA. The analysis showed that phase transformation is controlled by plastic deformation mechanism.

The precipitation process in an aged Cu-1.9wt%Ni-0.3wt%Be alloy has been examined by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The precipitation sequence found is: Guinier- Preston (G.P.) zones → γ'' → γ' → stable γ. The disk-shaped G.P. zones and the disk-shaped γ'', γ' and γ precipitated phases are composed of monolayers of Be atoms on {100}αof the Cu matrix and alternative Be and Ni matrix layers parallel to {100}α. The γ'' phases consisting of two to eight Be-layers has a body-centered tetragonal (bct) lattice witha=b=0.24 nm andc=0.28 nm. The γ' or γ phase is bct witha=b=0.24 nm andc=0.26 nm ora=b=0.26 nm andc=0.27 nm. The γ'', γ' or γ phase aligns with the matrix according to the Bain orientation relationship. The growth kinetics of disk-shaped γ precipitates on aging at 500°C has been also investigated. The {001}αhabit planes of the γ precipitates migrate by a ledge mechanism. The average thickness of the γ disks increases with aging timetast1/2. An analysis of experimental data using a kinetic model yields the diffusivity of solute in the Cu matrix, which is in agreement with the reported diffusivity of Ni in Cu.

Nanocrystalline TiO2 anatase with particle size in the range of 5–7 nm has been prepared by in situ cracking of the sol at 85 °C, thereby avoiding the intermediate gel formation process. Hydrolysis of Ti(O-isoPr)4 was carried out in excess of 2-propanol to keep the suspension of fine particles from agglomeration. Differential thermal analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, powder x-ray diffraction (XRD), and electron microscopy have been used to characterize the samples. Gel to crystalline conversion, which requires a temperature of at least 400 °C, can be achieved by digesting the TiO2 sol at 85 °C. XRD and selected area electron diffraction patterns show the presence of a small amount of brookite phase along with the major anatase phase. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy shows that the average grain size of TiO2 particle remains around 5–9 nm even when heated at 510 °C.

Effect of solution and aging treatment on the microstructure of Mg-7Zn-3Al alloy is studied by using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and quantitative image analysis. The results show that the as-aged microstructure is composed of α-Mg matrix, grain boundary τ (Mg32(Al,Zn)49 ) phase, and fine dispersed τ particles inside the grain. The solution degree has significant effects on the formation, morphology, and size of the grain boundary τ phase. The volume fraction and the size of the undissolved eutectic τ phase decrease with the increase of solution time treated at 325°C. Through sufficient solution treatment, discontinuous eutectic τ phase retains fine strip morphology after aging, in contrast to the microstructure in sample undergone insufficient solution which manifests as-cast feature, while at the same time nano-sized particles precipitate out from the matrix. The precipitates display paralleled short bar, having certain orientation relationship with the matrix.

The properties and microstructure evolution of quaternary Cu-Ni-Co-Si alloys with different Ni/Co mass ratios were investigated. The microstructure and morphological characteristics of the precipitates were analyzed by using electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The mechanical properties and conductivity of the alloys were significantly improved after the addition of Co. The grains presented an obvious growth trend with an increase in Ni/Co mass ratios, and the appropriate Co accelerated the recrystallization process. The δ-(Ni, Co)2Si phases of the Cu-Ni-Co-Si alloys and δ-Ni2Si phases of the Cu-Ni-Si alloys shared the same crystal structure and orientation relationships with the matrix, which had two variant forms: δ1 and δ2 phases. The precipitates preferential grew along with the direction of the lowest energy and eventually exhibited two different morphologies. Compared with that of the Cu-Ni-Si alloy, the volume fraction of precipitates in the alloys with Co was significantly improved, accompanied by an increase in the precipitated phase size. The addition of Co promoted the precipitation of the precipitated phase and further purified the matrix. A theoretical calculation was conducted for different strengthening mechanisms, and precipitation strengthening was the key reinforcement mechanism. Moreover, the kinetic equations of both alloys were obtained and coincided well with the experimental results.

ABSTRACTDouble-shelled nanotubes composed of inner shell Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3 (PZT) and outer shell TiO2 are successfully fabricated by a spin coating of each sol-gel solution on porous anodic alumina template. Field emission transmission electron microscopy images show that they have a ~ 10 nm wall thickness. The selected area electron diffraction patterns show that they have two mixed crystalline phases of tetragonal PZT and anatase TiO2. The analyses of scanning transmission electron microscopy equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy confirm their uniform distribution of each element.
