In order to explore the influences of different pins on the weld based on the specialty of the aluminium alloy sheet welding, three kinds of pins were chosen to perform high rotation speed friction stir welding on a 1 mm thick 6061-T6 aluminium alloy in this study. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the joints were analysed at the same time. When the rotation speed was 11,000 rpm and the welding speed was 300 mm/min, more sufficient stirring and a better joint (the tensile strength reaches 87.2% of the base metal) can be obtained with the pin design of a quadrangular frustum pyramid. The pattern of the weld cross section was a “flat T” and no obvious “S curve” was found in nugget zone (NZ). Heat affected zone (HAZ) and thermo-mechanically affected zone (TMAZ) were also narrow. The results demonstrate that the proportion of low angle boundaries in each area of the weld is lower than that of traditional Friction Stir Welding (FSW). The grain size of NZ is significantly refined and the proportion of low angle boundaries is only 20.1%, which have improved the welding quality.

In this study, a 3 mm thickness 7075-T6 aluminium alloy sheet was used in the friction stir welding process. Using the design of experiment to reduce the number of experiments and to obtain the optimum friction stir welding parameters by utilizing Taguchi technique based on the ultimate tensile test results. Orthogonal array of L9 (33) was used based on three numbers of the parameters and three levels for each parameter, where shoulder-workpiece interference depth (0.20, 0.25, and 0.3) mm, pin geometry (cylindrical thread flat end, cylindrical thread with 3 flat round end, cylindrical thread round end), and thread pitch (0.8, 1, and 1.2) mm) this technique executed by Minitab 17 software. The results showed that the optimum friction stir welding parameters were 0.25 mm shoulder-workpiece interference depth, cylindrical thread flat end pin shape, 1.2 mm thread pitch depending on the S ̸ N ratio and ANOVA analysis and the welding efficiency was 93.3% based on the ultimate tensile stress.

Relevant Effect

The present research activity aims at studying different conditions for the circumferential friction stir welding of cylindrical components in aluminium alloy. Different parameters have been considered, such as the rotational velocity of the tool, the tangential velocity of the cylindrical elements and the number of welding passes. The obtained data have been analysed and the strength of each joint modelled. It has been observed a relevant effect of the combination between the rotational velocity of the tool and the tangential velocity of the cylindrical components on the strength of the joint.
