In this study, a simulation experiment by farm warming with infrared ray radiator was carried out, and results showed that the broad bean (Vicia faba L.) growing days were shortened by increased temperature. The seedling, ramifying, budding, blooming, podding, and maturing stages were shortened by 1–4, 1–2, 1, 2–3, 1–2, and 2–4 days, respectively, and the whole growing period was shortened by 7–16 days when the temperature increased by 0.5–2.0°C. The broad bean yield increased by 10.1–16.6% when the temperature increased by 0.5–1.0°C, and significantly decreased by 38.1–90.1% when the temperature increased by 1.5–2.0°C. Increased temperature significantly improved the fat, carbohydrate, ash and energy contents.

Legumes crops play significant roles both in human diets and agriculture, and contribute to sustainable farming. In this study, we evaluated both some quality traits and yield of four landraces (Cegliese, Iambola, San Francesco, and FV5) of faba bean (Vicia faba L. var. major Harz) for fresh consumption in order to assess and distinguish the landraces also in comparison with two commercial varieties (Aguadulce supersimonia and Extra-early purple) by using a crop system without irrigation. Independently of the genotype, we obtained the same pods yield (1794 g m−2) without affecting the seed size. All genotypes can be considered a good source of vitamin C, although Extra-early purple and San Francesco reveal the highest content (703 and 646 mg 100 g−1 fresh weight—FW, respectively). Cegliese showed the highest L-dopa content (10.14 mg 100 g−1 FW), suggesting its use as a natural rich source of L-dopa (dopamine precursor used for Parkinson’s disease treatment) instead of using synthesized L-dopa. In conclusion, this study highlight interesting quality traits of faba bean when consumed as fresh vegetables, suggesting its positive role on human health and the possibility of its production by using local horticultural systems that are skilled in optimizing resource utilization.

The interaction of fertilization methods, ridging and the use of a mulch has been established over a 4-yr period on the yield of a local cultivar of broad bean (Vicia faba L. var. major). No significant effect has been obtained on green pod production, average number of pods per hectare, average number of pods per individual plant (three interrelated parameters), contribution of green grain in percent of the whole green pod, green seed yield and dry matter production of the stubble. Yearly variations have been obtained. The differences in dry stubble production and pod number per plant indicate that broad bean yield seems to be related to the prevailing climatic conditions during plant development and particularly at the blooming stage.Key words: Vicia faba L. var. major, broad bean
