Within the didactic process and until the confinement of spring 2020, however, at the University of Wrocław, interpersonal, group and institutional electronic communication (cf. McQuail's pyramid of communication levels 2010: 25) was mainly reduced to the exchange of e-mails and the transmission of information or documents, with some occasional attempts to implement computer-assisted teaching . This peaceful landscape was completely disrupted by the introduction of distance learning from 18 March 2020 (Regulation No. 29/2020 of the President of the University of Wrocław on the prevention of the spread of COVID-19 among members of the University of Wrocław community). Face-to-face classes were interrupted one week earlier, at the end of the second week of the semester (which normally consists of fifteen weeks). The teachers then had only eight days to completely reprofile their methodological portfolio for distance learning.

AbstractObjectives: To introduce and evaluate a computer assisted learning programme in undergraduate psychiatry (CAL-PSYCH).Methods: An interactive e-learning environment was created within the University College Dublin portal to assist students in acquiring the necessary skills in undergraduate psychiatry. The pilot phase consisted of providing their lectures on-line on the interactive site. Data were gathered from the last group of students in 2001 (pre-CAL-PSYCH) and the first group of students using CAL-PSYCH in 2002. We included assessment of percentage of students accessing the site, attendance rates at face-to-face lectures and tutorials, and also a feedback questionnaire from students who accessed the site.Results: All responders had used CAL-PSYCH. Students gave higher ratings for quality and interactivity of lectures compared with the pre-CAL-PSYCH curriculum. Students also expressed enthusiasm about CAL-PSYCH and encouraged us to develop it further.Conclusions: Computer-assisted learning environments such as CAL-PSYCH provide the opportunity to bring modern e-learning techniques to medical education, and may provide a new model for life-long learning in medicine.

The University Abdou Moumouni (UAM) of Niamey in Niger mainly focused on traditional face to face learning, and even the existence of the African Virtual University since the years 1999 did not change the situation. It is only after the official opening at the University of the Francophone Digital Campus in December 2003 that lecturers and students started overseeing and taking advantages of all the benefits of e-Learning and distance learning. The present paper builds on the author’s personal initiatory experience in e-Learning to highlight some specific challenges that traditional universities such as the UAM face in their efforts to introduce e-Learning and distance learning as a new mode of course delivery. The study shows that even though challenges are big, political and institutional support can freshen the perspectives and change opportunities into realities.

The relation between assignment and exam performances of the university students and their academic procrastination behaviors in distance and face-to-face learning environments was investigated in this study. Empirical research carried out both in face-to-face and online environments have generally shown a negative correlation between academic procrastination and academic performance. However, the effect of academic procrastination on assignments in distance learning setting has not been analyzed extensively. To understand the interaction between academic procrastination and the learning environment; assignment and exam performances of eighty-eight university students in face-to-face (FtF) and distance learning (DL) environments were investigated. According to the findings of the study, students’ academic procrastination and assignment scores were negatively correlated in both environments but especially in DL setting. Contrary to this, academic procrastination and exam scores were correlated to each other only in FtF environment. On the other hand, there was no correlation between total assignment and exam scores for DL group, while a medium positive correlation was found in FtF group. The findings of binary logical regression analysis demonstrated that predictive value of the DL environment for assignment score is much stronger than academic procrastination behavior of students.

The article presents the findings of the comparative study of the indices of psychological security of educational environment in the context of face-to-face and distance learning formats. The study has revealed the decrease in the level of resistance to psychological violence from teachers, and that of satisfaction with significant attributes of education environment during a distance learning period. It has been proved that psychology students demonstrate weakening of the learning activity significance and lack of face-to-face trustful communication with a teacher. Most differences have been revealed on the behavior component of the attitude towards university education environment: a positive attitude lessened, while a neutral one rose. The indices of the attitude towards education environment on the cognitive component were also high: a neutral level increased

The scope of education is the parties that are involved in the sphere of education such as proteges/students/college students, the basic and the purpose of education itself, educators, educational materials, educational methods, educational evaluation, educational tools and the surrounding environment within the scope of education. Education is also one of the most important parts of human life that has provisions that aim to help the improvement of living standard and life for themselves and for the country. If referring to the Article 31 (amendment) paragraph (1) of the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia which states that "Every citizen has the right to education, of course education is meant in principle, learning what we know is based on face to face in the class. to transfer the knowledge to their students (students / college students). This has now turned into virtual, distance learning, due to various constraints of limited facilities and infrastructure, the ability to absorb the technology, on the other hand, the unstable condition of the spread of covid-19 has certainly become a dilemma for several universities, including the university of Muslim Nusantara Al Washliyah in implementing learning whether it's pure online use organized with Distance Learning (PJJ) -virtual and other types of virtual.Keywords : Strategy, the Quality of Learning,New Normal

The study compares the performance of distance learning students with full-time students in a traditional face-to-face learning environment. This study is one aspect of a larger research project designed to gain insight into factors that may influence the performance of distance learning students. The data used in the study represent the graduating GPA (Grade Point Average) and CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average). The result showed that students of Distance Learning Institute (DLI) performed better in business administration than the mainstream students, while the mainstream accounting students perform better than the DLI accounting students. Results indicated that there was a statistically significant difference in final grades of these groups of students.

Covid-19 pandemic has affected the learning process in the university. The students and all lecturers are doing distance learning by using video conference apps. They are no longer meeting each other face-to-face in the class. The lecturer should cope with this situation by giving a topic that focused on online public speaking or presentation. The skill of online public speaking or presentation should be delivered to the students from all faculties, not only for communication students. One of the students’ organisations, Mahkamah Mahasiswa, conducted an online event to give its member a piece of knowledge about online public speaking. They invited me as a lecturer of communication science in the Faculty of Communication, Universitas Tarumanagara. Discussion and survey are held just after presentation. The results were that the students realize the importance of public speaking skills in the class and their organisation activities. Then, they also identify that this skill is beneficial for their carrier in the future. Unfortunately, based on their answer, they have not obtained this knowledge in the class, except for communication students. Therefore, the result of this community service event should be considered by all of the faculty in the university. In the reality, students expect to obtain a topic about how to be a good public speaker in the class or an online class. This material can be inserted in one of the subjects, or it can be one of the community service activities along with a member of the communication faculty.Kondisi pandemi Covid-19 membuat proses pembelajaran di perguruan tinggi dilakukan jarak jauh. Komunikasi yang biasanya dilakukan secara tatap muka, beralih menggunakan sarana konferensi video. Situasi ini perlu disikapi dengan pemberian materi public speaking atau presentasi online. Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat yang dilakukan oleh dosen Program Studi Ilmu Komunikasi Universitas Tarumanagara adalah memberikan materi tentang public speaking atau presentasi online kepada mahasiswa. Dalam kegiatan kali ini, mahasiswa yang memperoleh materi ini berasal dari seluruh fakultas, tergabung dalam organisasi Mahkamah Mahasiswa. Paska kegiatan, pengabdi melakukan diskusi dan memberikan sejumlah pertanyaan terkait kemampuan public speaking atau presentasi dalam ruang kelas online. Hasilnya mahasiswa menyadari pentingnya kemampuan public speaking dalam perkuliahan dan berorganisasi di kampus, bahkan kemampuan ini juga kelak berguna ketika memasuki dunia kerja. Namun, materi ini belum diberikan oleh seluruh fakultas. Hasil kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini perlu menjadi evaluasi bagi fakultas agar memberikan perhatian terhadap materi public speaking atau presentasi di kelas dalam pembelajaran jarak jauh. Fakultas bisa menggandeng dosen program studi Ilmu Komunikasi atau praktisi untuk memberikan materi seputar public speaking atau presentasi. Materi bisa disisipkan dalam salah satu mata kuliah, atau sebagai salah satu kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat.

The paper looks at an experience of use of ICT in a face-to-face ESP required course in the curriculum of the BA in Commerce and Marketing currently taught at the University of Oviedo, Spain. The main aims were (1) to update the contents and methods of the course so that they allowed for significant, collaborative and autonomous learning; (2) to substantially reduce the time devoted to preparing, grading and reviewing tests, as well as handling student complaints, and (3) to ensure uniformity of content and assessment across sections. The results show that aims (1) and (3) were fully met. As regards aim (2), even though ICT did reduce the time spent reviewing tests and handling complaints, the preparation of computer-assisted, on-site exams took longer than expected, mainly because strict security measures had to be implemented to prevent cheating and the permission to use the computer labs at the Faculty involved a considerable amount of paperwork. Whereas the literature on the use of ICT in education mainly focuses on student motivation and engagement, the experience bears out that ICT can be effectively used to combat student unhappiness by ensuring uniformity of content and assessment in multi-section courses. It also shows that many digital native students do not have strong digital skills.

One of the norms of distance education is that learners are the drivers of their learning and teachers merely facilitate the learning process. To this effect, learners are expected to be fully engaged in their studies throughout for them to perform well in their studies. However, the ‘distance’ factor inherent in distance education has been identified as one of the major challenges for learners studying in this mode. The geographical isolation significantly detracts from the need for social interactions that are usually afforded by face-to-face situations. Consequently, the void leads to isolation, confusion, stress and ultimately contributing to high failure rate and drop-outs from the academic programmes. In this study, we document the use of “WhatsApp” as a tool for learner support among postgraduate students on the distance learning mode within the University of Zambia. The study, through “WhatsApp”, follows students where they are found and learns from them without disrupting their privacy and culture to inform ODL policy and practice.  It is now clear that the University should be proactive to encourage the creation of self-generated social networks to mitigate vexing emergent issues students face on the distance learning mode.

  Distance learning can be regarded as learning that predominates entirely through the internet. It has been implemented because of the pandemic of Covid 19. According to Chaney (2010: 5-21), it is also referred to as distance learning, which is a swiftly flourishing setting that allows teachers and students and all people working in all domains the flexibility of working beyond the restraints of time and place. Also, this shift from face-to-face lectures to online classes is the only possible solution. Nevertheless, academic institutions would not be capable of converting all of their college curricula into an online resource overnight. Distance, scale, and personalized learning are the three biggest challenges for online learning. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to shed light on the challenges of online learning for students at the university level. And then to try to find out the possible solutions and recommendations to enhance online learning for the benefit of students.
