This paper studies the economic performance of 19 OECD countries. Eight economic variables are selected to describe the economic performance which are incorporated into two factors afterwards by factor analysis. The relations among the variables and that between factors and variables are analysed. A comparative study is made, based on the factor scores of these 19 countries; and the countries are classified into 5 categories using cluster analysis, according to their similarities in the variables and the extracted factors. The common characteristics of the countries with similar economic performances on the two factors are discussed. The paper presents an outline of the nations’ economic performance during this period. It is quite interesting, as a by-product finding, that the countries sharing the economy similarities also have the geographical communalities.

A number of statistical experiments analyze data on the frequency and distribution of words evoking twenty-two different themes in Gide's novel l'Immoraliste. The statistical tests are simple and standard; they can be applied using widely-available program packages. The results are evaluated in terms of traditional literary analysis of the novel. Correlations of the distributions of the themes could not be interpreted easily when presented in table form. However, multidimensional scaling and cluster analysis of the correlations not only produced results parallel to the literary analysis but suggested how it could be refined. Regression analysis did not generate conclusive results. The methods used are evaluated and suggestions for future explorations are made.

Taking the China Academic Journal Network Publishing Database as a platform, we constructed a co-word matrix with the high-frequency keywords of ecological/environmental risk related papers published on core journals. We made multidimensional scaling analysis and cluster analysis using SPSS, and discussed the status of ecological risk related research. The results show that the research hotspots can be divided into five aspects, including ecological risk assessment on heavy metals in the bottom mud, ecological risk assessment of toxic organic pollutants, regional landscape ecological risk, environmental safety accidents and risk management, and other types of ecological risk such as transgenic and biological invasion.
