Construction materials usually constitute a major portion of the total cost in a building construction project. Despite the potential benefit of ICT, convincing construction organisations to embrace its use and implementation has proved a difficult task. This research seeks to identify the implementation of ICT in construction materials management processes and to investigate on the acceptance of contractors for ICT transformation to the materials management in construction projects. In relation to that, current constraints that are found hindering the acceptance of ICT in materials management processes are also identified. A triangulation research approach which consists of standard derived questionnaires, semi structured interviews with class A contractors and review of previous research were conducted. The findings from this research reveal that the implementation of ICT in the materials management for construction projects in Malaysia is at early stage. Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet and handheld devices are found to be the common ICT tools adopted in the materials management processes. Meanwhile, there is only an average level of acceptance towards the transformation of ICT implementation in the construction materials management. The main barrier is found to be the cost involvement at the initial stage or overall implementation of ICT in the materials management processes. Finally, it can be concluded that there is a lack of awareness towards the ICT implementation of materials management in the construction projects.

The enterprise resource planning (ERP) system can integrate the major business management functions of the enterprise with a single common database to allow sharing of all information and achieve efficient communications between management functions. Based on the needs of running a construction enterprise, ERP shows potential applicability to the construction industry. This paper sought to quantify the benefits of ERP systems when applied to construction materials procurement. Specifically, this paper briefly described the business processes involved in construction materials procurement and illustrated how ERP systems could be implemented and the efficiency of the construction materials management system consequently enhanced. The transformation from a non-ERP system into an ERP system through application integration, internal integration, external integration, and automation were simulated. Results show that the individual task improvements of models can increase the productivity of the materials management cycle by up to 5.2%, 18.2%, 27.8%, 13.5%, and 79.2% through internal integration, external integration, application integration, automation, and ERP system, respectively, by automating most of the repeated transactions and reducing manpower required to perform the tasks.Key words: enterprise resource planning, materials management system, productivity, simulation.

The intensity and rate of construction operations require logistics and transportation that can adapt to the changing nature of activities on a day-to-day basis of construction and that enable rapid decision-making. This paper aims to design an integrated RFID technology system for managing construction materials onsite. The integration includes managing materials during the front-end and the execution phases, managing the inventory, locating materials on site with Global Positioning System GPS, and developing Kanban systems for managing different stakeholders’ inputs onsite. The research also sheds the light into the effect of using RFID on leveraging valuable data. RFID systems can gather large amount of tag data via wireless connections.

In order to meet the highest levels of these trends, managers are looking to select the best development strategy of the process of construction and commissioning work of the diversity of construction materials, facilities, equipment, etc., required to put into operation the investment objectives designed. For successful development strategies in the current conditions of increasing complexity, it is necessary to apply some antithetical principles and to deepen the factors that influence the effectiveness of global economic projects and to use mathematical modeling analytical knowledge multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary to contribute to the project. Based on these requirements, in this article, the authors aim to submit a brief description of these principles.
