Within recent years a considerable amount of work has been done on the Myxosporidia, especially, as pointed out by Kudo (1919), in North America, Asia, and to a lesser degree in Japan (Fugita, 1912, 1913, 1925). Few investigations, however, have been carried out in Australia, and consequently very little is known concerning the distribution of the group in this country. There appear to be as yet only two contributions to the subject, papers by T. Harvey Johnston and M. J. Bancroft (1918, 1919). As far as can be ascertained, my paper is the first report concerning Myxosporidia from fishes of Southern Australian waters, and contains the first record of a species of Chloromyxum from Australia.

Mysmena quebecana, a new species of the spider family Mysmenidae is here described. Mysmena quebecana was discovered in a spider bio-inventory survey of the Yamaska National Park (Québec, Canada). We therefore report the first occurrence of the family in this province, as well as the first member of the genus Mysmena for continental North America.

A small collection of five Sponges made by E/V Nautilus on Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary, California, include the first report of the crinorhyzid Cladorhiza bathycrinoides Koltun off North America and a new species of Hexactinellida, Farrea. cordelli n. sp. The other three sponges in the collection are known to occur off the surrounding North-East Pacific coast, but new geographic or depth distributions are reported for these.

A new species of Amanita sect. Roanokenses, A. brunneofolia, from South Korea, is described based on morphological and molecular evidences. The species is characterized by medium- to large-sized basidiomata, a greenish white pileus covered with brownish, floccose pyramidal volval remnants, an appendiculate margin, reddish brown lamellae, a long radicating stipe, and ellipsoid to elongate amyloid basidiospores. Based on both nrLSU and combined dataset (nrLSU, rpb2 and tef1-α), A. brunneofolia formed a monophyletic clade and clearly separated from other Amanita species. In addition, we describe two other Amanita species in A. sect. Roanokenses, namely, A. caojizong and A. sphaerobulbosa. This is the first report of these species for South Korea.

SUMMARYGiven the worldwide decline of amphibian populations due to emerging infectious diseases, it is imperative that we identify and address the causative agents. Many of the pathogens recently implicated in amphibian mortality and morbidity have been fungal or members of a poorly understood group of fungus-like protists, the mesomycetozoans. One mesomycetozoan, Amphibiocystidium ranae, is known to infect several European amphibian species and was associated with a recent decline of frogs in Italy. Here we present the first report of an Amphibiocystidium sp. in a North American amphibian, the Eastern red-spotted newt (Notophthalmus viridescens), and characterize it as the new species A. viridescens in the order Dermocystida based on morphological, geographical and phylogenetic evidence. We also describe the widespread and seasonal distribution of this parasite in red-spotted newt populations and provide evidence of mortality due to infection.

Diarimella laurentidae, a new species occurring on dead bark and decorticated twigs of American beech (Fagus grandifolia Ehrh.), is reported from the Muir's Wood ecological reserve, located in the centre of the Haut-Saint-Laurent region in the province of Quebec. Diarimella laurentidae is characterized by stromatic, pulvinate, black, setose fructifications composed of a basal stroma of textura angularis, a brown peripheral wall of textura porrecta, conidiomatal setae of two types, and unicellular multisetulate conidia. Its relationships with described Diarimella species is discussed. This is the first report of a species of Diarimella from North America.Key words: Diarimella laurentidae, new fungus species, coelomycete, Fagus grandifolia.
