The period of susceptibility of potato tubers to powdery scab (Spongospora subterranea) was studied by inoculating potato plants with spores, or by watering plants in infested soil, at different stages of plant development in greenhouse conditions. Maximum susceptibility began about 1 week before the stage when 50% of stolons had swollen to at least 5-mm diameter (tuber set), and ended 3-4 weeks later. With holding irrigation water during this period reduced the severity of powdery scab by 65-75% in field experiments in 1981-82 and 1982-83, but had no apparent effect on disease severity in 3 out of 6 large-scale field trials during 1984-85.

Bacterial wilt, caused by Ralstonia solanacearum, is a major disease affecting potato (Solanum tuberosum) production worldwide. Although local reports suggest that the disease is widespread in Uruguay, characterization of prevalent R. solanacearum strains in that country has not been done. In all, 28 strains of R. solanacearum isolated from major potato-growing areas in Uruguay were evaluated, including 26 strains isolated from potato tubers and 2 from soil samples. All strains belonged to phylotype IIB, sequevar 1 (race 3, biovar 2). Genetic diversity of strains was assessed by repetitive-sequence polymerase chain reaction, which showed that the Uruguayan strains constituted a homogeneous group. In contrast, inoculation of the strains on tomato and potato plants showed, for the first time, different levels of aggressiveness among R. solanacearum strains belonging to phylotype IIB, sequevar 1. Aggressiveness assays were also performed on accessions of S. commersonii, a wild species native to Uruguay that is a source of resistance for potato breeding. No significant interactions were found between bacterial strains and potato and S. commersonii genotypes, and differences in aggressiveness among R. solanacearum strains were consistent with previously identified groups based on tomato and potato inoculations. Moreover, variation in responses to R. solanacearum was observed among the S. commersonii accessions tested.

Goal. The study of the effectiveness technology of potato cultivation for the phytosanitary state of tubers in the conditions of the Polesie region of Ukraine. Methods. Research of production crops of the Gabenets farm. Monitoring of major fungal diseases on potato tubers. Identification of phytopathogens on potato tubers. Farming technology consisted of 9 stages and included 6 herbicide-fungicidal treatments in the growing season of potato plants. Samples were collected and phytopathological analysis of potato tubers during harvest was conducted according to conventional methods. Identification of pathogens of fungal diseases was carried out at the Institute of Plant Protection of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, according to conventional methods. Results. The performance of potato varieties in the application of a set of protection measures in FG “Gabenets” was evaluated. It was analyzed that the yields of varieties on the production crops of the farm were quite high and ranged from 50.25 to 58.10 t / ha, and the yield from one bush — from 1.014 kg to 1.163 kg. The highest yield was on production crops of the Pirol variety and amounted to 58.10 t / ha, compared to the control — 47.30 t / ha. Phytopathological analysis of potato chips varieties was carried out, which resulted in the detection of dry fusarium potato rot in control variants of Opal, Karlenа, Fantasia and Kibitz. No crop disease was detected in production crops where a system of protective measures was applied. Pirol cultivar has proven to be resistant to fungal pathogens. Conclusions. Protective measures during the vegetation of potato plants prevented the mass development of fungal diseases on potato tubers, which in turn will have a positive effect on the stickiness of the tubers and preserve their marketability.

Crop yields can be significantly increased by using pectic polysaccharides – natural ecologically safe and effective plant growth stimulants. In this paper, high growth-stimulating activity of pectins with respect to potatoes is shown. The research was conducted in 2012–2015 in the Komi Republic (Syktyvkar) on sod-podzolic soils with an average humus content of 2.8–3.4%. The objects of the study in the field experiments were zoned potato varieties: early-ripening Gloria variety and the middle-aged variety Nevsky. The following pectic polysaccharides served as stimulants of potato growth and development: heracleuman – pectin of Heracleum sosnowskyi Manden., lemnan – pectin duckweed Lemna minor L. and silenan – pectin of callus tissue of campion Silene vulgaris (M.) G. Processing of potatoes with aqueous solutions of pectic polysaccharides included pre-planting soaking of potato tubers in water and spraying potato plants in the phases of 3–5 leaves and tuber formation. For processing potatoes, working solutions were used, which were prepared from 100 times diluted 0.002% aqueous solutions of pectins. The consumption of the working solutions of pectins were 10 liters on 1 ton of tubers and 300 l/ha of planting potatoes. Tubers and potato plants treated with water instead of pectins were used as control samples. It is established that all tested pectins possess growth-stimulating activity and processing of potatoes with aqueous solutions of pectic polysaccharides increases the early and overall yield of this crop, as well as the content of dry matter, starch and vitamin C in potato tubers.
