181 taxa of lichenized <i>Ascomycotina</i> (including four species of lichcnicolous fungi) occurring in the Bełchatów Industrial Region (BIR) are described. They present the original state of lichen taxonomic diversity and their resources. before the strip brown coal mine and electric power station of BIR were put into operation.

At the beginning of our study, i.e.. before opening the Bełchatów brown coal mine and the power station 155 species of lichens were registered in the period 1970-1985. A preliminary estimation of the influence of the Bełchatów Industrial Region (BIR) on the lichen flora has been performed. More than 1% of the lichen flora has entirely disappcared, about 43% of the species have shown partial devastation of their localities and numerous localities of more than 35% of taxa have been threatened.

Abstract To date, no studies have been conducted on macroinvertebrate communities in coal mine settling ponds used for temporary retention of saline mine waters. The objective of the research was to evaluate which habitat – Ruppia maritima, Phragmites australis or sediments without macrophytes – is the most favorable for the abundance and biomass of macroinvertebrate communities. The study was carried out in a hyposaline settling pond located in a mining and urban area in southern Poland. At this time, it is the only inland locality of R. maritima in Poland. In the studied coal mine settling pond, the non-native, euryhaline amphipod Gammarus tigrinus dominated in the communities on all the habitats. The abundance of other taxa was small and similar on each type of substrate; only Corixidae were much more abundant on the widgeongrass beds. The highest abundance and biomass of macroinvertebrates was recorded at the sites with R. maritima. Our study highlights the importance of coal mine settling ponds as a substitute habitat for salt-tolerant invertebrates.

Gastrotrichs are a permanent and common element of meiofauna communities. They inhabit wide range of aquatic and semi-aquatic niches, including a variety of anthropogenic habitats, such as the sand filters of a cold marine mesocosm (Parent et al. 2001) or palm houses (e.g. Kolicka et al. 2013), and extreme natural habitats like hot springs (Guerne 1888) or hydrothermal vent zones (Kieneke & Zekely 2007).
