Laminar forced convection heat transfer from a constant temperature tube wrapped fully or partially by a metal porous layer and subjected to a uniform air cross-flow is studied numerically. The main aim of this study is to consider the thermal performance of some innovative arrangements in which only certain parts of the tube are covered by metal foam. The combination of Navier–Stokes and Darcy–Brinkman–Forchheimer equations is applied to evaluate the flow field. Governing equations are solved using the finite volume SIMPLEC algorithm and the effects of key parameters such as Reynolds number, metal foam thermophysical properties, and porous layer thickness on the Nusselt number are investigated. The results show that using a tube which is fully wrapped by an external porous layer with high thermal conductivity, high Darcy number, and low drag coefficient, can provide a high heat transfer rate in the high Reynolds number laminar flow, increasing the Nusselt number almost as high as 16 times compared to a bare tube. The most important result of thisstudy is that by using some novel arrangements in which the tube is partially covered by the foam layer, the heat transfer rate can be increased at least 20% in comparison to the fully wrapped tube, while the weight and material usage can be considerably reduced.

Purpose – The analysis of the flow field and heat transfer around a tube row or tube banks wrapped with porous layer have many related engineering applications. Examples include the reactor safety analysis, combustion, compact heat exchangers, solar power collectors, high-performance insulation for buildings and many another applications. The purpose of this paper is to perform a numerical study on flows passing through two circular cylinders in side-by-side arrangement wrapped with a porous layer under the influence of a magnetic field. The authors focus the attention to the effects of magnetic field, Darcy number and pitch ratio on the mechanism of convection heat transfer and flow structures. Design/methodology/approach – The Darcy-Brinkman-Forchheimer model for simulating the flow in porous medium along with the Maxwell equations for providing the coupling between the flow field and the magnetic field have been used. Equations with the relevant boundary conditions are numerically solved using a finite volume approach. In this study, Stuart and Darcy numbers are varied within the range of 0 < N < 3 and 1e-6 < Da < 1e-2, respectively, and Reynolds and Prandtl numbers are equal to Re=100 and Pr=0.71, respectively. Findings – The results show that the drag coefficient decreases for N < 0.6 and increases for N > 0.6. Also, the effect of magnetic field is negligible in the gap between two cylinders because the magnetic field for two cylinders counteracts each other in these regions. Originality/value – To the authors knowledge, in the open literature, flow passing over two circular cylinders in side-by-side arrangement wrapped with a porous layer has been rarely investigated especially under the influence of a magnetic field.

In this study, a fully three-dimensional calculation method has been further developed to simulate and analyze various processes in a thick anode duct. The composite duct consists of a porous layer, the flow duct and solid current connector. The analysis takes the electrochemical reactions into account. Momentum and heat transport together with gas species equations have been solved by coupled source terms and variable thermo-physical properties (such as density, viscosity, specific heat, etc.) of the fuel gases mixture. The unique fuel cell conditions such as the combined thermal boundary conditions on solid walls, mass transfer (generation and consumption) associated with the electrochemical reaction and gas permeation to / from the porous electrode are applied in the analysis. Results from this study are presented for various governing parameters in order to identify the important factors on the fuel cell performance. It is found that gas species convection has a significant contribution to the gas species transport from / to the active reaction site; consequently characteristics of both gas flow and heat transfer vary widely due to big permeation to the porous layer in the entrance region and species mass concentration related diffusion after a certain distance downstream the inlet.
