An accepted belief is a proposition considered likely enough by an agent, to be inferred from as if it were true. This paper bridges the gap between probabilistic and logical representations of accepted beliefs. To this end, natural properties of relations on propositions, describing relative strength of belief are augmented with some conditions ensuring that accepted beliefs form a deductively closed set. This requirement turns out to be very restrictive. In particular, it is shown that the sets of accepted belief of an agent can always be derived from a family of possibility rankings of states. An agent accepts a proposition in a given context if this proposition is considered more possible than its negation in this context, for all possibility rankings in the family. These results are closely connected to the non-monotonic 'preferential' inference system of Kraus, Lehmann and Magidor and the so-called plausibility functions of Friedman and Halpern. The extent to which probability theory is compatible with acceptance relations is laid bare. A solution to the lottery paradox, which is considered as a major impediment to the use of non-monotonic inference is proposed using a special kind of probabilities (called lexicographic, or big-stepped). The setting of acceptance relations also proposes another way of approaching the theory of belief change after the works of Gärdenfors and colleagues. Our view considers the acceptance relation as a primitive object from which belief sets are derived in various contexts.

Iterated belief change aims to determine how the belief state of a rational agent evolves given a sequence of change formulae. Several families of iterated belief change operators (revision operators, improvement operators) have been pointed out so far, and characterized from an axiomatic point of view. This paper focuses on the inference problem for iterated belief change, when belief states are represented as a special kind of stratified belief bases. The computational complexity of the inference problem is identified and shown to be identical for all revision operators satisfying Darwiche and Pearl's (R*1-R*6) postulates. In addition, some complexity bounds for the inference problem are provided for the family of soft improvement operators. We also show that a revised belief state can be computed in a reasonable time for large-sized instances using SAT-based algorithms, and we report empirical results showing the feasibility of iterated belief change for bases of significant sizes.

Let CL(X) denote the nonempty closed subsets of a metric space X. We answer the following question: in which spaces X is the Kuratowski convergence of a sequence {Cn} in CL(X) to a nonempty closed set C equivalent to the pointwise convergence of the distance functions for the sets in the sequence to the distance function for C ? We also obtain some related results from two general convergence theorems for equicontinuous families of real valued functions regarding the convergence of graphs and epigraphs of functions in the family.

An important issue in ML consists in developing approaches exploiting background knowledge T for improving the accuracy and the robustness of learned classifiers C. Delegating the classification task to a Boolean circuit Σ exhibiting the same input-output behaviour as C, the problem of exploiting T within C can be viewed as a belief change scenario. However, usual change operations are not suited to the task of modifying the classifier encoding Σ in a minimal way, to make it complying with T. To fill the gap, we present a new belief change operation, called rectification. We characterize the family of rectification operators from an axiomatic perspective and exhibit operators from this family. We identify the standard belief change postulates that every rectification operator satisfies and those it does not. We also focus on some computational aspects of rectification and compliance.

Abstract This articles reports on the fieldwork methodology that was adopted to collect naturally occurring conversations within an Italo-Australian family. In particular, it focusses on the gradual development of the researcher’s position from an outsider to the family network to an insider of a special kind, as reflected through gradual changes in the topics and discourse structure of the conversations, the participants’ constellation and the languages used. The articles evaluates some major adjustments that had to be made to the ethnographic methods adopted as initial fieldwork models. It concludes that any method needs modifications in order to suit the specific speech community under scrutiny as well as the linguistic focus of the research.

The problem of parental partiality and justice concerns the conflict between parents’ natural desire to put their own children’s interests first and the principles of egalitarian justice which express equal concern with the well-being of all. The underlying dilemma between partial concern and impartial treatment is a much discussed one in moral and political philosophy. Parental partiality raises that dilemma in an acute form given the very close attachment that parents have to their children and the substantial and ongoing social and economic inequalities present in contemporary societies. Investigating the meaning of egalitarian justice reveals that under any interpretation it imposes substantial obligations which many parents concerned with their own children’s interests will reject. Parental partiality, in turn, can be theorized as a social convention or personal project, but is most plausibly seen as realizing a special kind of value or form of flourishing, such as intimacy for example. Short of abolishing the family or abandoning the commitment to egalitarian justice, any reconciliation of this conflict will have to speak to both sets of values. One option is to circumscribe the domain of parental partiality by arguing that parents only have rights to realize a particular kind of valuable relationship with their children; another is to build in to our conception of parental partiality moral constraints of which egalitarian justice might be one. As long as we live in an unequal world where parents have strong attachments to their children, this debate looks set to continue.

Introduction. The article is devoted to the consideration of the semantic-cognitive and functional-pragmatic features of somatisms in the texts of Russian folklore lyric songs. The object of scientific description is the semantics of somatisms as markers of national identity, which receives conceptual comprehension in connection with its study in the aspect of genre-discursive originality of lyric songs. Aim and objectives. The aim of the research is to study the somatic code, explicated by the lexeme-somatism head in the folklore fragment of the Russian picture of the world, taking into account the genre-discursive conditionality of the functioning of this lexeme. Material and methods. 127 texts of Russian folklore lyric songs containing the lexeme-somatism head, selected by continuous sampling from a collection of lyric songs were used as the research material. The main research methods are observation methods, quantitative analysis, lexical-semantic analysis, elements of discourse and conceptual analysis are used. Results and discussion. The starting point of the study was the thesis that somatisms have not only linguistic, speech, but also linguoculturological and linguo-cognitive status. Somatisms are rightfully defined as linguistic markers of the cultural code of Russian identity and a fragment of the national picture of the world. In the meaning of most Russian somatisms, there is a pronounced national-cultural component of meaning. The lexeme-somatism head belongs to the content of especially significant somatisms, since in the linguistic picture of the world it implements conceptual concepts that are important for understanding the mentality of the Russian people: «the owner of the family» (at the head of the family), «the main person in the house» (at the head of the table), «trait of a national character” (rave head), etc. These interpretations have the specificity of implementation in lyric songs of different genre and discursive nature. The last parameter is defined as extralinguistic, related directly to the thematic content of each specific text. The last parameter is defined as extralinguistic, related directly to the thematic content of each specific text. Among the genre varieties of lyric songs are analyzed love, family, military, workers, anticlerical, coachman, burlak lyric songs, songs about village holidays, about everyday life. The study also revealed common features that reflect the functioning of the head somatism in the lyric songs in general. These features are due to a special kind of lyricism: penetration, reflexivity, heightened feelings of the author, the ultimate subjectivism of the narrative. Conclusion. The study of somatisms in the aspect of their culturological marking makes it possible to identify the specifics of their semantics, pragmatics and functioning in texts of different genre and discursive orientation. The interpretation of the somatic code of Russian culture by means of an analysis of somatisms is deepened and objectified in the context of the genre-discursive approach.

This article examines Karl Ove Knausgård’s My Struggle, especially its fi rst volume A Death in the Family, with respect to the writer’s use of a discourse of bluntness in his autobiographical narrative for the purpose creating meaningful art. Such a form of art is developed in opposition to knowledge. The author’s renunciation of knowledge enables a special kind of relationship with the reader through expressions of closeness or shame; the reader witnesses the process of Knausgård’s becoming, rendered through narration, repetition, and accumulation. My Struggle is characterized by a unique way of conveying an honest autobiographical, engaging the reader and opening up new possibilities for literature.

The natural properties of the aggregation operators and the most elementary ones are the idempotence, the monotonicity and the continuity from below. We assume only these properties for the aggregation operators with infinitely many inputs, defined by functionals on the family of measurable functions. A family of fuzzy measures is associated with each aggregation operator. The properties of horizontal or vertical pseudo-additivity are recognizable by means of this family of fuzzy measures.

This article is focused on the family of role-based trust management languages (RT). Trust management languages are a useful method of representing security credentials and policies in large distributed access control mechanisms. They provide sets of credentials that are assigned to individual roles performed by the specific entities. These credentials provide relevant information about security policies issued by trusted authorities and define user permissions. RT languages describe the individual entities and the roles that these entities play in a given environment. A set of credentials representing a given security policy defines which entity has the necessary rights to access a specific resource and which entity does not have such rights. This study presents the results of research focusing on the potential of the family of RT languages. Its purpose is to show how security policies may be applied more widely by applying an inference system, and then using the extensions of the credentials, by taking into account time-related information or the conditions imposed with regard to the validity of such credentials. Each of these extensions can be used jointly or separately, offering even a wider range of opportunities

Flying Ad-hoc Network (FANET) is described as a special kind of ad-hoc network coming under the family of Mobile Ad-hoc Network (MANET). FANETs is characterized to have high range of mobility when comparing with MANET. Setting up the route and maintaining its lifetime is a tedious job in FANET, because the MANET routing protocols that already exist will never fit for FANET because of its increased level of mobility, environmental circumstances and topography structure. There arises a need for bio-inspired based routing protocol to overcome the obstacles. This paper proposes Artificial Bee Colony Inspired Protocol inspired from the bio-inspired concepts. The proposed protocol gradually reduces the level of congestion occurring at different routing path, where it considers the successful route setup and its life time to increase the data delivery. In ABCIP, bee colony is enhanced to analyze and choose the routing path instead of picking up in random. Simulation is carried out using NS2and the results indicates the proposed protocol considerably performs better than the existing protocols in maximizing the successful route setup and its life time, which minimizes the service disruption
