Abstract This study aimed to describe the development and the empirical evidence of reliability and validity of an instrument that proposes to assess, in the context of maternal depression, family organization resources and cumulative risks in families with school-age children. The items were constructed based on protection processes and developmental outcomes. The Inventory was conducted during a semi-structured interview with a convenience sample: 100 mothers of school-age children, 50 of them diagnosed with recurrent depression and 50 without psychiatric disorders. Agreement analysis between the coding of interviews by independent evaluators indicated values higher than 85%. Based on the exploratory factor analysis, the final composition of the instrument was 31 items, distributed in the dimensions Family Organization and Negative Beliefs, with Cronbach’s alpha value of, respectively, 0.72 and 0.87. Statistically significant differences between the groups with and without depression sustained the discriminant validity of the instrument, enabling its use as a guiding resource for interventions.

Objective This pilot study examined the internal consistency, test—retest reliability, construct validity, and discriminant validity of the Activity Participation Assessment (APA) for school-age children in Korea. Methods The construct validity of the APA was first established by factor analysis on the response of 134 nondisabled children. Internal consistency was evaluated for each of the factors. A test—retest study was conducted on 22 nondisabled children. Discriminant validity was established by comparing the participation of 56 nondisabled children and 56 children with intellectual disabilities and examining sex differences of 61 boys and 61 girls. Results Analysis of the APA revealed five factors, which were labeled as instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), sports and outdoor activities, hobbies and school activities, social activities, and personal care. The factors showed acceptable levels of internal reliability (Cronbach's alpha = .63–.89). The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) for the five factors were all in the good range (ICC = .86–.92). We found statistically significant difference between nondisabled children and children with intellectual disabilities in five factors. We also found that girls participated in significantly more IADL, hobbies and school activities, and social activities. However, boys participated in significantly more sports and outdoor activities. Conclusion The APA shows good internal reliability, test—retest reliability, discriminant validity, and construct validity. However, evidence of psychometric properties was limited by a small sample size. Psychometric properties such as interrater reliability as well as concurrent validity and construct validity need to be tested using a larger sample size with representative demographics.

The article aims to reveal collaboration-based support provision models for a child with special educational needs and his/her family in Lithuania. The qualitative research method used was a semi-structured interview. The participants of the research were special educators and speech therapists providing support to school-age children with special educational needs. The obtained results of the research helped to reveal children support specialists’ attitude towards collaboration-based support provision to a child with special educational needs and his/her family in Lithuania. The research revealed the importance and opportunities of the implementation of interprofessional coordinated support based on interprofessional collaboration, referring to the experience of speech therapists and special educators providing support to a school-age child with special educational needs and his/her family.

Abstract The aim of this study was to verify possible associations between maternal depressive symptoms, children’s behavioral problems and perceptions regarding the family interactions, considering the reports of mothers and children. A total of 60 mothers and their school-age children were divided into two equal groups, according to the presence or absence of maternal depression indicators, and evaluated using the following instruments: Sociodemographic Questionnaire, Patient Health Questionnaire-9, Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, and scales of family interaction (Escalas de Qualidade nas Interações Familiares). The results indicate that maternal depressive symptoms were associated with children’s behavioral problems and with family interactions reported by mothers and children. Maternal depression and positive family interactions reported by the mothers predicted behavioral problems in children. Positive family interactions reported by the mothers also mediated the association between maternal depression and children’s behavioral problems, highlighting the relevance of interventions with mothers with depression indicators that have school-age children.

Purpose Clinician–client relationships may influence treatment success in speech-language pathology, but there are no established tools for measuring these relationships. This study describes the development and application of a set of scales for assessing clinician–client relationships in children's speech-language treatment. Method Twenty-two triads of participants completed a longitudinal study. Each triad had 1 school-age child enrolled in speech-language treatment, 1 caregiver, and 1 speech-language pathologist (SLP). The clinician–client relationship scales were administered to all 3 types of participants at study onset and again 2 weeks later. Treatment progress measures were collected 4 months later. Analyses established the reliability and validity of the clinician–client relationship scales. Results Adequate internal consistency reliability and test–retest reliability were established for all 3 versions of the scale (child, caregiver, and SLP). Convergent validity was moderate between SLPs and children but lower when caregivers were included. Predictive validity analyses established significant relationships between caregiver and SLP ratings of the clinician–client relationship and future treatment progress. Conclusions This exploratory study established the viability of the clinician–client relationship scales for further development and application. The importance of establishing and utilizing measures of the clinician–client relationship in speech-language pathology is discussed.

Paediatric occupational therapists often assess and treat school-age children and youth presenting with visual perceptual dysfunction. It is, therefore, important that occupational therapists use visual perceptual instruments that possess sound measurement properties (such as validity, reliability, responsiveness and clinical utility). The Motor-Free Visual Perception Test – Revised (MVPT-R) is an instrument frequently used by paediatric occupational therapists. Clinicians need to be cognisant of the measurement properties of the assessments they use in order to provide the best level of care for the paediatric clients they serve. Therefore, a review and critique of the MVPT-R is presented. Even though the MVPT-R has been revised recently, little has been done to address issues related to its reliability and validity. Evidence of criterion-related validity and construct validity, in particular, is still lacking. The rationale for measuring motor-free visual perception is also not well developed and needs to be expanded in the MVPT-R manual. In addition, the issue of summing the scores from the five MVPT-R subscales is questionable. What the final MVPT-R summed score really measures in terms of a screening evaluation or diagnosis is also lacking. At this stage, this instrument should be used and interpreted by occupational therapists with caution.

SynopsisA consecutive series of school age children (7 to 16 years) with emotional disorders (N = 100) were compared with a series of community controls (N = 100) matched for age, sex and social class for the quality of their friendships. A semi-structured interview was developed to measure the quality of friendship for this purpose. Significantly more (48%) children with emotional disorder were likely to be rated as experiencing moderate to poor friendships in the 12 months prior to the onset of symptoms than were controls (16%) in the 12 months prior to interview. Prepubertal children with moderate to poor friendship patterns were classified as either predominantly anxious or depressed. Postpubertal children with moderate to poor friendships patterns were, in contrast, predominantly anxious. These findings suggest that puberty denotes a point of change for the impact of friendship deficits on the psychopathology of emotional disorder. There were no sex differences in the clinical classification of children with moderate or poor friendship patterns.

IntroductionRacial/ethnic minority school-age children are at risk for unhealthy weight gain during the summer, and there is a dearth of information regarding the underlying behavioural and environmental factors. The study objective is to provide an in-depth examination of dietary and physical activity behaviours and food, physical activity, and social environments of African American and Hispanic school-age children during the summer.Methods and analysisAn observational study will be conducted using a multistate (Ohio and Indiana, USA) prospective design examining the weight gain trajectory among a racially/ethnically diverse convenience sample of economically disadvantaged school-age children. In addition, a subset of these children will be evaluated to learn their daily health behaviours and food, physical activity, and social environments during the summer. Comparisons will be made between children who routinely attend programming and those who do not, both in the larger sample and subset. Determinants of programme participation and factors that may enhance the beneficial effects of programme participation will also be identified. Data collection at the Indiana site is planned for summer 2018.Ethics and disseminationThis study is approved by The Ohio State University Behavioral and Social Sciences Institutional Review Board. Abstract Background There is growing evidence that school children in the United States gain weight more rapidly during the summer than the school year, but few studies have explored the causes of this phenomenon. The goal of this study was to qualitatively explore potential determinants of accelerated summer weight gain by interviewing parents of school-age children. Methods Key informant interviews were conducted with parents of third and fourth grade students enrolled in a school-based physical activity intervention in three peri-urban communities in Eastern Massachusetts. A structured interview guide was developed to assess school year and summertime differences in child diet, physical activity, daily routine, and family rules. Interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim. Transcripts were coded and major themes were identified using thematic analysis. Results Summer activities varied substantially by family. Many parents characterized summer as a time with less structure and more relaxed rules, particularly around bedtime and screen use. Parents perceived their child to be more physically active in the summer and reported few barriers to summertime physical activity. Parents reported increases in both positive (increased consumption of fruits and vegetables) and negative (increased consumption of “sweets” and “junk foods”) dietary behaviors. They highlighted several stressors unique to summer, such as the high cost of camps and the need to coordinate childcare and manage children’s time. Conclusions Parents perceived their children to be more physically active in the summer and consume more fruits and vegetables than during the school year. However, they also perceived children to consume more energy-dense, nutrient poor foods, engage in more screen time, and have later bedtimes during the summer. These behaviors are important targets for summertime obesity prevention interventions. Large-scale quantitative studies are needed to determine whether these parent perceptions reflect meaningful risk factors for accelerated summer weight gain.
