Objective : Therefore, we evaluated the relationship between the subclinical hypothyroidism and red cell distribution width (RDW) levels in a healthy population. Subjects and methods : The medical records of 23,343 consecutive health subjects were reviewed. Subjects were classified into four thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) groups to determine the correlation between TSH and other variables in detail (0.3 to < 2.5 mU/L, 2.5 to < 5 mU/L, 5 to < 7.5 mU/L, and ≥ 7.5 mU/L). Results : In the multivariate linear regression analysis, RDW was associated with TSH levels, and e-GFR was inversely associated with TSH levels, respectively (standardized beta coefficient = 0.102, -0.019; p < 0.001, p < 0.001). After adjusting for age and sex, in the four groups, TSH levels were significantly correlated with RDW, estimated glomerular filtration rate (e-GFR), and free thyroxine (fT4) levels in all groups. Furthermore in the 4 th group, RDW levels were more strongly associated with TSH levels than in the other groups (p = 0.006). Conclusions : RDW levels are correlated with euthyroid and subclinical thyroid status. Notably, RDW is more correlated with subclinical hypothyroidism than the euthyroid status. This study presents the relationship between the RDW levels and thyroid function using TSH level in a large healthy population.

Background. The epidemic of overweight and obesity presents a major challenge to chronic disease prevention and health across the life course around the world. The putative relationships between thyroid hormones, body weight, and adipose tissue homeostasis have been the focus of several studies in recent years, but the causal relationships between these parameters have not been well established. The purpose of the study: to investigate the relationship between serum thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), insulin resistance (IR), and cardiovascular risk factors in a sample of obese people with subclinical hypothyroidism. Materials and methods. A retrospective, longitudinal analysis of 145 obese patients was performed. The TSH and free thyroxine (fT4) levels, anthropometric measurements, and laboratory test results were analyzed. Results. Twenty-three individuals presented with TSH levels above the normal level (subclinical hypothyroidism). Their waist circumference (WC) was significantly higher than that of euthyroid individuals. Serum TSH positively correlated with the homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) index, triglycerides, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). Using TSH and body mass index as independent variables, TSH levels were shown to be independently related to HOMA-IR (p = 0.002) and triglycerides (p = 0.006). Among euthyroid subjects, individuals with TSH values < 2.5 mIU/ml exhibited statistically significant decreases in waist-to-hip ratio, HDL-C levels, and HOMA-IR scores and a tendency toward lower WC values. Conclusions. Subclinical hypothyroidism in overweight and obese people appears to be associated with excess weight, especially visceral weight. In the present sample of obese patients, TSH levels appear to be associated with insulin resistance.

Purpose: An individual’s lack of social connections and social isolation is often associated with feelings of loneliness which is regarded as having a negative effect on health. This paper describes the development and assessment of a 10 item ‘Personal Sociability and Connections Scale’ (PeSCS) to measure individual’s disposition and accompanying skills to seek out companionship and engage in interpersonal relations. Methods: The study was conducted at a rural primary care unit in Northern Greece. A total of 199 attenders were recruited over a 6-week period in 2020 and questionnaires completed. This informed the 10-items PeSCS that comprises Social, Behavioral, and Emotional components focusing on the expression of social comfort, willingness to share experiences, stories and concepts, and feelings of similarity at first contact. Reliability of the PeSC scale was assessed and the relationship with scale scores examined as an indicator of convergent validity. A multivariate linear regression analysis was performed to examine the relationship of PeSC scale score with the characteristics of participants. Results: Assessment of reliability of PeSC scale produced a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.809. The relationship between components and the total PeSCS scores identified significant correlations ( p < .001). At a multivariate level, male gender was the sample characteristic with a significant association with scale levels ( p < .05) and higher annual income with Social component ( p < .05). Otherwise the distribution of sociability dispositions was similar across population groups. Conclusion: The 10-item PeSC scale forms a simple and quick to complete measure whose overall reliability was rated as ‘meritorious’. The PeSC instrument may be a useful tool for assessing the causes and appropriate responses to the negative health effects of loneliness and social isolation.

Selenium is both an essential nutrient and a highly toxic element, depending on its dose and chemical forms. We aimed to quantify urinary selenium excretion and dietary selenium intake in 137 healthy non-smoking blood donors living in the northern Italian province of Reggio Emilia. We assessed selenium status by determining urinary selenium levels (mean 26.77 µg/L), and by estimating dietary selenium intake (mean 84.09 µg/day) using a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Fasting blood levels of glucose, lipids and thyroid-stimulating hormone were measured using automatized laboratory procedures. Dietary and urinary selenium were correlated (beta coefficient (β) = 0.19). Despite this, the association of the two indicators with health endpoints tended to diverge. Using linear regression analysis adjusted for age, sex, body mass index, cotinine levels and alcohol intake, we observed a positive association between urinary selenium and blood triglyceride (β = 0.14), LDL-cholesterol (β = 0.07) and glucose levels (β = 0.08), and an inverse one with HDL-cholesterol (β = −0.12). Concerning dietary selenium, a slightly positive association could be found with glycemic levels only (β = 0.02), while a negative one emerged for other endpoints. The two selenium indicators showed conflicting and statistically highly imprecise associations with circulating TSH levels. Our findings suggest that higher selenium exposure is adversely associated with blood glucose levels and lipid profile. This is the case even at selenium exposures not exceeding tolerable upper intake levels according to current guidelines.

Abstract Background Subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) is a common clinical problem. Controversy surrounds the definition, clinical importance, and need for prompt diagnosis and treatment of the mild form of SCH. Aim The aim of the study was to analyze the evolution of serum thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels after a therapeutic homeopathic intervention in women older than 40 years with SCH. Methods This study is a retrospective series of 19 cases of SCH, with serum TSH levels between 5 and 10 mIU/L, treated exclusively with homeopathic medicines prescribed on an individualized basis. Results Nineteen patients were included according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Their mean age was 56 years, they were followed for a mean duration of 69 months, the mean number of serum TSH level measurements was 18, and the intervention was successful for 13 patients. Conclusion The homeopathic therapeutic intervention was successful in 68% of the patients, with serum TSH levels back within the normal range (0.5–5.0 mIU/L).

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is characterized by structural and functional disorder of the kidney with irreversible and gradual characteristics with one of the modalities of renal replacement therapy such as hemodialysis (HD). The role of inflammation in HD patients by uremic toxin and dialysis can be assessed by the marker of High Sensitive C Reactive Protein (HsCRP). Several studies have examined the relationship between HsCRP and red cell distribution width (RDW) in regular HD patients which leads to increase patient morbidity and mortality, but until now, there has been no study in Indonesia regarding the correlation between HsCRP and RDW in regular HD patients. This study aims to determine the correlation HsCRP as a marker of inflammation and RDW values in regular HD patients. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study in Regular HD patients at Dialysis Unit-H. Adam Malik General Hospital. A total of 20 subjects were included. Bivariate and multivariate analysis was conducted to analyze the relationship of HsCRP, ureum, creatinin, hemoglobin, and eGFR to RDW. Results: There were 20 Regular HD patients analyzed. The proportion of patients with increased RDW was 80%. In pearson correlation test, there is a strong correlation between HsCRP and RDW (r= 0.667, p<0.001). Discussion: Majority of regular HD patients at H. Adam Malik General Hospital were assessed with increased RDW. Pearson correlation analysis revealed HsCRP was significantly associated with RDW. Conclusion: Increased RDW was found in 80% of regular HD patients at H. Adam malik General Hospital. From pearson correlation analysis, we found HsCRP was significantly associated with RDW. Background: Selfies are a rising phenomenon associated with the widespread use of smartphones and social media. The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between different personality traits and selfie behaviors. Methods: Undergraduate psychology students were asked to complete a questionnaire about their frequency of selfie taking, selfie posting to social media, and selfie sharing through private messaging. They were also asked to complete the Rosenberg 10-item self-esteem scale and the International Personality Item Pool (IPIP)-50 item scale to evaluate the Big Five personality traits. Results: A total of 96 participants were included in this study (mean age ± standard deviation of 26.4 ± 9.0 years, 81.3% women). On univariate analysis there was a significant negative correlation between the frequency of selfie taking (Spearman r = -0.228, p = 0.025) or posting (Spearman r = -0.238, p = 0.025) and emotional stability. However, on multivariate linear regression analysis adjusting for age among other factors, only self-esteem was independently and negatively correlated with the frequency of selfie taking (beta = -0.206, p = 0.020) or posting (beta = -0.233, p = 0.020), with the effect most notable in young (<25 years) individuals for selfie taking. Extraversion was independently and positively correlated with the frequency of selfie sharing (beta = 0.264, p = 0.005), with the effect most notable in young (<25 years) women. Conclusion: Findings from this study further expand our knowledge of the relationship between different personality traits and rising digital media phenomena.
