In this paper, a deep learning-based traffic state discrimination method is proposed to detect traffic congestion at urban intersections. The detection algorithm includes two parts, global speed detection and a traffic state discrimination algorithm. Firstly, the region of interest (ROI) is selected as the road intersection from the input image of the You Only Look Once (YOLO) v3 object detection algorithm for vehicle target detection. The Lucas-Kanade (LK) optical flow method is employed to calculate the vehicle speed. Then, the corresponding intersection state can be obtained based on the vehicle speed and the discrimination algorithm. The detection of the vehicle takes the position information obtained by YOLOv3 as the input of the LK optical flow algorithm and forms an optical flow vector to complete the vehicle speed detection. Experimental results show that the detection algorithm can detect the vehicle speed and traffic state discrimination method can judge the traffic state accurately, which has a strong anti-interference ability and meets the practical application requirements.

Abstract In order to solve the increasingly serious traffic congestion problem, an intelligent transportation system is widely used in dynamic traffic management, which effectively alleviates traffic congestion and improves road traffic efficiency. With the continuous development of traffic data acquisition technology, it is possible to obtain real-time traffic data in the road network in time. A large amount of traffic information provides a data guarantee for the analysis and prediction of road network traffic state. Based on the deep learning framework, this paper studies the vehicle recognition algorithm and road environment discrimination algorithm, which greatly improves the accuracy of highway vehicle recognition. Collect highway video surveillance images in different environments, establish a complete original database, build a deep learning model of environment discrimination, and train the classification model to realize real-time environment recognition of highway, as the basic condition of vehicle recognition and traffic event discrimination, and provide basic information for vehicle detection model selection. To improve the accuracy of road vehicle detection, the vehicle target labeling and sample preprocessing of different environment samples are carried out. On this basis, the vehicle recognition algorithm is studied, and the vehicle detection algorithm based on weather environment recognition and fast RCNN model is proposed. Then, the performance of the vehicle detection algorithm described in this paper is verified by comparing the detection accuracy differences between different environment dataset models and overall dataset models, different network structures and deep learning methods, and other methods.

The concept of edge caching provision in emerging 5G and beyond mobile networks is a promising method to deal both with the traffic congestion problem in the core network, as well as reducing latency to access popular content. In that respect, end user demand for popular content can be satisfied by proactively caching it at the network edge, i.e., at close proximity to the users. In addition to model-based caching schemes, learning-based edge caching optimizations have recently attracted significant attention, and the aim hereafter is to capture these recent advances for both model-based and data-driven techniques in the area of proactive caching. This paper summarizes the utilization of deep learning for data caching in edge network. We first outline the typical research topics in content caching and formulate a taxonomy based on network hierarchical structure. Then, many key types of deep learning algorithms are presented, ranging from supervised learning to unsupervised learning, as well as reinforcement learning. Furthermore, a comparison of state-of-the-art literature is provided from the aspects of caching topics and deep learning methods. Finally, we discuss research challenges and future directions of applying deep learning for caching.

Automatic traffic flow classification is useful to reveal road congestions and accidents. Nowadays, roads and highways are equipped with a huge amount of surveillance cameras, which can be used for real-time vehicle identification, and thus providing traffic flow estimation. This research provides a comparative analysis of state-of-the-art object detectors, visual features, and classification models useful to implement traffic state estimations. More specifically, three different object detectors are compared to identify vehicles. Four machine learning techniques are successively employed to explore five visual features for classification aims. These classic machine learning approaches are compared with the deep learning techniques. This research demonstrates that, when methods and resources are properly implemented and tested, results are very encouraging for both methods, but the deep learning method is the most accurately performing one reaching an accuracy of 99.9% for binary traffic state classification and 98.6% for multiclass classification.

AbstractAs ride-hailing services become increasingly popular, being able to accurately predict demand for such services can help operators efficiently allocate drivers to customers, and reduce idle time, improve traffic congestion, and enhance the passenger experience. This paper proposes UberNet, a deep learning convolutional neural network for short-time prediction of demand for ride-hailing services. Exploiting traditional time series approaches for this problem is challenging due to strong surges and declines in pickups, as well as spatial concentrations of demand. This leads to pickup patterns that are unevenly distributed over time and space. UberNet employs a multivariate framework that utilises a number of temporal and spatial features that have been found in the literature to explain demand for ride-hailing services. Specifically, the proposed model includes two sub-networks that aim to encode the source series of various features and decode the predicting series, respectively. To assess the performance and effectiveness of UberNet, we use 9 months of Uber pickup data in 2014 and 28 spatial and temporal features from New York City. We use a number of features suggested by the transport operations and travel behaviour research areas as being relevant to passenger demand prediction, e.g., weather, temporal factors, socioeconomic and demographics characteristics, as well as travel-to-work, built environment and social factors such as crime level, within a multivariate framework, that leads to operational and policy insights for multiple communities: the ride-hailing operator, passengers, third-part location-based service providers and revenue opportunities to drivers, and transport operators such as road traffic authorities, and public transport agencies. By comparing the performance of UberNet with several other approaches, we show that the prediction quality of the model is highly competitive. Further, Ubernet’s prediction performance is better when using economic, social and built environment features. This suggests that Ubernet is more naturally suited to including complex motivators of travel behavior in making real-time demand predictions for ride-hailing services.

The vehicular adhoc network (VANET) is an emerging research topic in the intelligent transportation system that furnishes essential information to the vehicles in the network. Nearly 150 thousand people are affected by the road accidents that must be minimized, and improving safety is required in VANET. The prediction of traffic congestions plays a momentous role in minimizing accidents in roads and improving traffic management for people. However, the dynamic behavior of the vehicles in the network degrades the rendition of deep learning models in predicting the traffic congestion on roads. To overcome the congestion problem, this paper proposes a new hybrid boosted long short-term memory ensemble (BLSTME) and convolutional neural network (CNN) model that ensemble the powerful features of CNN with BLSTME to negotiate the dynamic behavior of the vehicle and to predict the congestion in traffic effectively on roads. The CNN extracts the features from traffic images, and the proposed BLSTME trains and strengthens the weak classifiers for the prediction of congestion. The proposed model is developed using Tensor flow python libraries and are tested in real traffic scenario simulated using SUMO and OMNeT++. The extensive experimentations are carried out, and the model is measured with the performance metrics likely prediction accuracy, precision, and recall. Thus, the experimental result shows 98% of accuracy, 96% of precision, and 94% of recall. The results complies that the proposed model clobbers the other existing algorithms by furnishing 10% higher than deep learning models in terms of stability and performance.

Abstract The traffic system is one of the core requirements of a civilized world and the development of the country depends on it in many aspects. In Ethiopia, the number of vehicles and pedestrians is increasing at a high rate from time to time. Excessive numbers of traffic on roads and improper control of traffic create traffic congestion. Uncontrolled traffic congestion hinders the transportation of goods and commuters from place to place and increases the volume of carbon emitted into the air. It can also either hampers or stagnates schedule, business, and commerce. Many images and video processing approaches have been researched in the literature on how to detect traffic congestion. One such approach is that of using background and foreground subtraction, convolutional neural network, and Average frame difference and deep learning method used to detect traffic congestion from different video sources. From the review one-stage object detector identified as the best methods to detect traffic congestion with acceptable accuracy and speed. In this study one-stage object detectors are used to detect traffic congestion from recorded video. Data is collected from different video footage and frames extracted from videos to prepare a dataset for the thesis. The extracted frames were labeled manually as congested and uncongested. To train, the models pre-trained weights were used. YOLOV3 and YOLOV5 model used for experimentation. Accuracy and speed metrics used to evaluate the performance of the models. A YOLOV3 model achieved 41.6 FPS and 68.6 % mAP on a testing dataset.
