The beginning of the adolescence period is characterized by restructuring of the motivational sphere of the personality and changes in the social situation in education. During this difficult period, Physical Education lessons for adolescents often turn into a routine, motivation for them ceases to develop. The authors presented the results of the study of the fifth graders’ motivation to have Physical Education lessons, developed the tasks of forming motivation when moving from the first stage of study to the second one according to the gender principle, since gender determines both the pace of psychological development of schoolchildren and the orientation of motivation, which also develops under the influence of interests actively formed in this period. The authors showed that schoolchildren come to the basic general secondary school with a moderately positive force of motivation. Boys are at the emotional stage in the development of motivation, they have identified prerequisites for the formation of the constructive-active and spiritual-creative orientation of motivation. The motivational sphere of girls is characterized by the socio-emotional orientation, is in the state of restructuring, has some shortage of relevant motives, what makes some threat to polymotivation in the future, is defined by integration of knowledge, activity, socio-personal and personal motives in the significant zone. Common tasks in increasing motivation will be the formation of an idea of health and ways to preserve it, the formation of ideas of personal self-improvement, means of physical education for personal development. For boys, the current tasks will be the formation of the spiritual and creative orientation, carried out on the basis of revealing the links between theoretical ideas about health and practical development and implementation of individual health programs for a healthy lifestyle. For girls, expanding the field of relevant motives by transferring the motivational orientation from emotionally effective to socially effective or personality-effective on the basis of the differentiation of significant motives, training in socially prestigious ways of achieving recognition in a socially significant group through various types of health activities, focusing on individual psychological, morphofunctional and motor abilities. The authors proposed pedagogical means for solving these problems.

The article considers the peculiarities of the use of volleyball in groups of sports improvement of students of higher education institutions. The current state of physical fitness of student youth is characterized. The need to improve the system of sports training of volleyball students in connection with changes in government, structural, logistical, economic conditions, the need to educate young people in a healthy lifestyle, one of the main factors of which should be daily exercise . It is established that the existing system of physical education of students on the basis of traditional provisions of current organizational and methodological programs does not provide fully effective rehabilitation, education and upbringing of students from the standpoint of conscious mandatory motor activity and personal needs in solving important tasks of personal development. The reforms carried out in the modern system of higher education have deeply affected the physical education of student youth. The most important role in the general and professional development of students of higher education institutions belongs to physical education, both as a discipline and as one of the subsystems of the holistic pedagogical process. One of the ways to solve this problem is to reorient the target programs of different types of physical culture to meet the needs of personal orientations, interests and personal goals of each student, more fully take into account the level of physical development and physical fitness, targeted use of training loads. It is for each of the cultivated types of sports activities in higher education institutions it is necessary to develop a goal, objectives, tools, forms and a comprehensive educational and training complex. This becomes possible only on the basis of the development and application of new educational and training technologies aimed at conscious motor activity of female students of higher education institutions in the chosen sport.

The purpose of this study was to implement a comprehensive teaching program based on the principles of Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) model and questioning, and to assess its consequences for students’ satisfaction of basic psychological needs, motivation, perceptions of ability and intention to be physically active during Physical Education lessons in primary education. A quasi-experimental design was utilized. Participants were 111 students from two different groups of fifth and sixth graders, all enrolled in one primary school. Participants were divided into experimental and control group. Experimental group experienced a TGfU unit, according to small side games and the questioning. Control group experienced a small side games unit, without questioning. Within-group results showed that experimental group students reported significantly higher mean scores in all dependents variables of the study, in both genders. Results showed that control group only reported significantly higher mean scores in intention to be physically active variable, also in both genders. The results demonstrate the need to implement didactic units under comprehensive pedagogical approaches to improve motivation and the intention to develop healthy lifestyle habits in female and male students. More researches are needed to support this evidence.

Purpose: Guided by Duda’s hierarchical conceptualization of the motivational climate that draws from self-determination and achievement goal theories, this study provides initial evidence of the psychometric properties of the Empowering and Disempowering Motivational Climate Questionnaire in physical education (EDMCQ-PE). Method: Questionnaire based with two samples of Welsh secondary school pupils. Results: Exploratory structural equation modeling provided a better fit of the data to the hypothesized model than confirmatory factor analysis. Moreover, a two-factor composite (i.e., empowering and disempowering) lower-order model provided an acceptable fit and clear parameter estimates. This two-factor model also demonstrated scalar gender measurement invariance. Discussion: The evidence from this study suggests the EDMCQ-PE is a promising scale for the assessment of secondary school pupils’ perceptions of the empowering and disempowering features of the motivational climate created by their physical education teachers. Conclusion: Moving forward, the statistical approach employed in this paper can inform future studies that develop questionnaire methodology in physical education and from an applied perspective; the EDMCQ-PE can be used by researchers and teachers to assess the motivational climate in PE and help inform the pedagogy underpinning teachers’ classes.
