The paper presents the experimental and theoretical study for temperature distribution around the cooling pipes of an ice rink pad. The heat transfer in the skating rink track is nonstationary and phase changing. In case of skating rinks equipped with pipe registers, the temperature field during the ice formation process can’t be modeled by analytical methods. The experimental research was targeted on finding the temperatures in several points of the pad and also details on ice shape and quality around the pipes. The temperatures measured on the skating ring surface using thermocouples is impossible due to the larger diameter of the thermocouple bulb compared with the air-water surfaces thickness. For this reason we used to measure the temperature by thermography method, thus reducing the errors The experimental results were compared against the numerical modeling using finite elements.

This paper proposes a pressing method for wall-climbing robots to prevent them from falling. In order to realize the method, the properties of the utilized suction cup are studied experimentally. Then based on the results, a guide rail is designed to distribute the attached suction cup force and implement the pressing method. A prototype of a wall-climbing robot that utilizes passive suction cups and one motor is used to demonstrate the proposed method. An experimental test-bed is designed to measure the force changes of the suction cup when the robot climbs upwards. The experimental results validate that the suction cup can completely attach to the surface by the proposed method, and demonstrate that the robot can climb upwards without falling.

Abstract The current aging management plans of passive structures in nuclear power plants (NPPs) are based on preventative maintenance strategies. These strategies involve periodic, manual inspection of passive structures using nondestructive examination (NDE) techniques. This manual approach is prone to errors and contributes to high operation and maintenance costs, making it cost prohibitive. To address these concerns, a transition from the current preventive maintenance strategy to a condition-based maintenance strategy is needed. The research presented in this paper develops a condition-based maintenance capability to detect corrosion in secondary piping structures in NPPs. To achieve this, a data-driven methodology is developed and validated for detecting surrogate corrosion processes in piping structures. A scaled-down experimental test bed is developed to evaluate the corrosion process in secondary piping in NPPs. The experimental test bed is instrumented with tri-axial accelerometers. The data collected under different operating conditions is processed using the Hilbert-Huang Transformation. Distributional features of phase information among the accelerometers were used as features in support vector machine (SVM) and least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) logistic regression methodologies to detect changes in the pipe condition from its baseline state. SVM classification accuracy averaged 99% for all models. LASSO classification accuracy averaged 99% for all models using the accelerometer data from the X-direction.
