The aim of this study was to establish the influence of harvest time on the contents of flavonoid compounds (rutin, isoquercetin, nicotiflorin, and astragalin) and chlorogenic acid, as well as the antiradical activity in white mulberry (Morus alba L.) leaves grown in Lithuania. Mulberry leaves contain a wide range of bioactive compounds, such as flavonoids and phenolic acids, which are responsible for beneficial effects on human health. Leaves from two mulberry cultivars were collected from July to September in 2015-2016. Quantitative determinations of four flavonoids and chlorogenic acid were conducted by HPLC method and antiradical activity using the 2.2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging method. The results showed that the total flavonoid contents of mulberry leaves in the two cultivars ranged from 921.92 to 1512.02 mg 100 g−1 (dry matter). The highest accumulated rutin, nicotiflorin, and chlorogenic acid contents and the greatest antioxidant activity were found in the leaves of ‘Plodovaja 3’. The bioactive compounds in the leaves of the mulberry cultivars varied over a period of time, where ‘Turchanka’ and ‘Plodovaja 3’ accumulated the highest total flavonoid contents in September and August, respectively. In both cultivars, the antiradical activity was highest in September. There were a very strong positive correlations between the antiradical activity as determined using the DPPH method and the chlorogenic acid contents (r = 0.887, p < 0.05) and the isoquercetin contents (r = 0.848, p < 0.05).

Abstract Background Solanaceae plants are incredible sources of proteins and minerals; some even have high medicinal value recognized traditionally. The present study was designed to explore and document the ethnobotany, phytochemical and mineral nutrient composition, antimicrobial properties, antioxidant potential and identify functional groups from edible species of Solanaceae from Mizoram, India. Methods Field surveys and samples collection were conducted from Aizawl District, Mizoram, India. All the studied samples were extracted using Soxhlet apparatus for analysis of bioactive compounds. The total phenol, total flavonoid and total anthocyanin content were determined using standard methods. The antioxidant activity was done using DPPH free radical scavenging activity, Ascorbate peroxidase (APX), Catalase (CAT) and Superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities. The proximate analysis and mineral contents were also determined. The antibacterial potential was determined by agar well diffusion method. The functional groups present in plants were analyzed using Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). All the results were reported as the mean ± standard deviation. The linear regression coefficient (R2) for total flavonoid and phenolic content with antioxidant activity was then analysed using Graph Pad Prism Version 5. Results The phytochemical screenings showed the presence of alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids, terpenoids and saponins. The highest total phenolic content was found in Solanum anguivi Lam. (29.51 mg GAE/g), and Capsicum annuum L. contained the highest total flavonoids (35.15 ± 0.03 mg/g). Proteins and carbohydrates contents were found to be the highest in Solanum melongena L. (28.49 mg/g) and Physalis angulata L. (35.64 mg/g) respectively. Elemental analysis showed the presence of Calcium (Ca), Copper (Cu), Iron (Fe), Manganese (Mn), Zinc (Zn), Potassium (K), Magnesium (Mg) and Sodium (Na) in high proportion in all the studied samples. All the plants extracts showed effective antibacterial activities against Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. FTIR spectra revealed the presence of multiple functional groups, which could be used to identify bioactive compounds that can be subsequently utilized as herbal remedies for various ailments. Conclusions Our findings suggest that considerable amount of nutrients, biologically active and therapeutic compounds are present in the studied samples and these plants could be potential sources for new phyto-pharmaceutical and nutraceutical preparations.

The pyrazoline ring is defined as a “privileged structure” in medicinal chemistry. A variety of pharmacological properties of pyrazolines is associated with the nature and position of various substituents, which is especially evident in diarylpyrazolines. Compounds with a chalcone fragment show a wide range of biological properties as well as high reactivity which is primarily due to the presence of an α, β-unsaturated carbonyl system. At the same time, bicyclic monoterpenoids deserve special attention as a source of a key structural block or as one of the pharmacophore components of biologically active molecules. A series of new diarylpyrazoline derivatives based on isobornylchalcones with different substitutes (MeO, Hal, NO2, N(Me)2) was synthesized. Antioxidant properties of the obtained compounds were comparatively evaluated using in vitro model Fe2+/ascorbate-initiated lipid peroxidation in the substrate containing brain lipids of laboratory mice. It was demonstrated that the combination of the electron-donating group in the para-position of ring B and OH-group in the ring A in the structure of chalcone fragment provides significant antioxidant activity of synthesized diarylpyrazoline derivatives.

AbstractMulberry leaves are used in traditional Chinese medicine and contain numerous active substances that are known to be beneficial for human health. The aim of this study was to investigate the phenolic compositions and antioxidant activities of the leaves from 23 mulberry cultivars. Qualitative LC-ESI-QTOF analysis revealed the presence of 11 phenolic compounds in the free phenolic extracts and 10 phenolic compounds in the bound fractions. Chlorogenic acid and caffeic acid were the major components in the free and bound fractions, respectively. The results revealed that the changguosang cultivar from Taiwan contained the greatest content of phenolic compounds as well as the highest antioxidant activity among the 23 cultivars examined, as determined using three separate antioxidant assays. The isoquercitrin, chlorogenic acid, and rutin contents of the free phenolic extracts displayed significant correlations with the antioxidant activities, while syringic acid and rutin were the main contributors to the antioxidant activities of the bound phenolic fractions. The obtained results demonstrate that mulberry leaves contain a variety of beneficial phenolic substances and may be suitable for further development as a herbal medicine.

Chlorogenic acid has been proved to have cardiovascular protection, antibacterial, antiviral, hemostatic, and hypolipidemia effects. Modern scientific research on the bioactivity of chlorogenic acid has been extended to the fields of food, medicine, health care and daily-use chemical industry. The aim of this research was to optimize the extraction conditions for chlorogenic acid from Eucommia ulmoides (Eucommiaceae) leaves. The significant variables were screened and optimized by a combination of Plackett-Burman test and Box-Behnken design. Optimum extraction parameters with ethanol concentration of 50%, solvent pH value of 3, and particle size of 60 mesh were determined according to variance analysis and contour plots. Under these conditions, the yield of chlorogenic acid was up to 4.36 mg/g, which was basically consistent with the theoretical prediction value of 4.50 mg/g. This study also proved the potential antioxidant activity of E. ulmoides leaves. The optimal extract of E. ulmoides leaves rich in chlorogenic acid showed the highest antioxidant activity in the FRAP method, which was 219.8 μM Trolox equivalents (TE) per g extract weight (EW) (μM TE/g EW). The DPPH method gave a similar value (168 μM TE/g EW) to the ABTS method (152 μM TE/g EW). The established extraction process was efficient in the recovery of chlorogenic acid from E. ulmoides leaves, encouraging its valorization as a cheap and sustainable alternative for the isolation of chlorogenic acid.

ABSTRACT Sponges are a component of coral reef biota that has bioactive compounds with a greater percentage of activity compared to compounds produced by terrestrial plants. This study aims to determine the presence of antioxidant activity in the ethanol extracts of sponge Ianthella basta from the waters of Tumbak Village. Ianthella basta sponge was extracted using maceration method with 96% ethanol solvent. Antioxidant activity testing was carried out using the DPPH method with a concentration of 100 µg / mL, 75 μg / mL, 50 μg / mL, and 25 μg / mL and Vitamin C p.a as positive control. Each sample was made three repetitions of the test. Testing using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The results showed that the ethanol extract of the Ianthella basta sponge had antioxidant activity with a percentage of 48.73% at a concentration of 100 µg / mL. Keywords: Ianthella basta sponge, Antioxidants, Extraction, DPPH  ABSTRAK Spons merupakan salah satu komponen biota penyusun terumbu karang yang mempunyai senyawa bioaktif dengan persentase keaktifan lebih besar dibandingkan dengan senyawa-senyawa yang dihasilkan oleh tumbuhan darat. Spons Ianthella basta diekstraksi menggunakan metode maserasi dengan pelarut etanol 96%. Pengujian aktivitas antioksidan dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode DPPH dengan konsentrasi 100 µg/mL, 75 µg/mL, 50 µg/mL, dan 25 µg/mL dan Vitamin C p.a sebagai kontrol positif. Masing-masing sampel dibuat tiga kali pengulangan uji. Pengujian menggunakan alat spektrofotometer UV-Vis. The genus Prangos is traditionally used for medicinal and food purposes. This genus contains a wide range of bioactive metabolites. In this work, phytochemical investigation and antioxidant activity evaluation of Prangos ferulacea were carried out. Chromatographic techniques were employed for the purification of extracts components. Spectroscopic techniques such as NMR, FT-IR, together with elemental analysis, were used for the structure elucidation of isolated compounds. Stigmasterol, daucosterol, and salicylic acid were purified and identified. Isolated compounds showed moderate to high antiradical activity in DPPH antioxidant assay. Results indicated the potential of P. ferulacea as a source of steroid and their glycosides and also its possible applications as antioxidant agents.

Berries are wealthy in bioactive compounds like phenolic compounds and flavonoids that are deemed antioxidants and are great important to health. This research was performed to examine, recognize and compare bioactive compounds in certain types of berries and their antioxidant activity. The data show that blue berry, black berry and Egyptian black mulberry contain the highest content of most bioactive compounds such as phenolic compounds, flavonoids and tannins, while long mulberry and red currant berry have the lowest content for most of these compounds. They therefore, contain the highest value of antioxidant activity. The chemical composition of the berries varies depending on cultivar, variety, location of growth, environmental conditions and harvest time, as well as post-harvest treatments therefore the composition differed from berry fruit to another. Thus, berry fruits are very useful in nutrition to protect the body from many diseases because of its containment of these compounds, which act as free radicals scavenger that harm the body and thus rid the body of many harmful toxins.

This is the first report on the extraction of cocoa bean shell (CBS) using deep eutectic solvents (DESs). Screening results with 16 different choline chloride-based DESs showed how choline chloride:oxalic acid DES was the most suitable solvent for the extraction of the bioactive compounds from CBS and that concentrations varied greatly depending on the used solvent. The DES extraction was compared to the DESs coupled with microwave extraction (MAE), and the yields of the extracted compounds were higher for DES/MAE. For theobromine, the obtained yields for DES extraction were 2.145–4.682 mg/g, and for caffeine, were 0.681–1.524 mg/g, whereas for DES/MAE, the same compounds were obtained in 2.502–5.004 mg/g and 0.778–1.599 mg/g. Antioxidant activity was also determined, using DPPH method, obtaining 24.027–74.805% activity for DES extraction and 11.751–55.444% for DES/MAE. Water content significantly influenced the extraction of targeted active compounds from CBS, whereas extraction time and temperature did not show statistically significant influence. The extraction temperature only influenced antioxidant activity. The study demonstrated how extraction using DES and microwaves could be of a great importance in the future trends of green chemistry for the production of CBS extracts rich in bioactive compounds.

Antioxidants are the radical scavengers that inhibit peroxidation and other free-radical processes, which in return safeguard different organisms from various diseases attributed to radical reactions. Synthetic antioxidants inhibit free radicals, but they also have harmful side effects. However, mycochemicals of natural fungal origin are safe and best substitutes for harmful synthetic chemical antioxidants. The prime objectives of the study include appropriate qualitative and quantitative mycochemical screening, antioxidant potential, and chemical composition of Snef1216 (Penicillium chrysogenum). The study has used aluminium chloride colourimetric method, Folin–Ciocalteu reagent assay, and DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) for analysis of total flavonoid content and phenol content and antioxidant activity, respectively. However, the presence of biologically active compounds was screened through gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Quantitative analysis demonstrated the existence of flavonoids, glycosides, flavones, saponins, phenols, and catecholic tannins excluding alkaloids, terpenoids, steroids, and gallic tannins. The outcomes exposed total flavonoid content and phenolic content in P. chrysogenum were 85.31 ± 1.23 mg·QE/g and 135.77 ± 1.14 mg·GAE/g, respectively. Snef1216 (P. chrysogenum) displayed the highest free-radical scavenging activity with 63.86% inhibition of DPPH. The analysis confirms that Snef1216 (P. chrysogenum) is an alternative source of natural antioxidants. The obtained data have provided the foundation for its use in agricultural, environmental, and pharmaceutical industries.

The antioxidant activities and total phenolic content of 30 samples of acacia honey from Croatian territory were analysed. Phenolics were determined by the modified Folin-Ciocalteu method, antiradical activity by the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method and potential antioxidant activity using the ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) method. In all samples, physicochemical parameters (water content, electrical conductivity, total reducing sugars, sucrose content, acidity, hydroxymethylfurfural content, prolin content, optical rotation, diastase activity and invertase activity) were measured according to Croatian legislation and International regulatory standards. Honey can be considered as a dietary supplement as it contains some important components including α-tocopherol, ascorbic acid, flavonoids and phenolics. The composition and properties of honey are dependent on floral origins, climatic conditions of the produced area, processing and storage methods. The results of physicochemical analyses showed that all the values of investigated parameters are in agreement with the current legislation. Phenolic content ranged from 31.72 mg/kg to 80.11 mg/kg, antiradical activity expressed as IC50 ranged from 61.28% to 253.47% and antioxidant activity expressed as FRAP value from 6.95 to 142.43. A positive correlation was observed between total phenolic content and antioxidant activity, indicating that phenolic compounds are mainly responsible for the antioxidant power of acacia honey.
